A Short History of England , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 431min
A Short History of England (1917) is Chesterton’s commentary on the philosophical, social, and religious history of England. The book focuses on those highlights that have shaped the nation, and is presented in the author’s customary wit. Having already displayed strong Roman Catholic leanings at this time of his life, the author equates Anglicanism and other forms of Protestantism with forms of atheism, but does commend the upliftment achieved by the Wesleyans. Chesterton views the story of England as the story of robber barons who became an aristocracy and who concealed their rise to power and hegemony through Parliament. To him, the worst mistakes made by the British Parliament were choosing Protestantism against the Stuarts, and choosing to imitate the Prussian-German model of an engineered social order. ungekürzt. The Hound of Heaven , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 9min
Unlike many of his contemporaries, the English poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) was a true mystic. While more celebrated poets, like Wordsworth, Tennyson, and Arnold, were content to express their religious leanings in traditional devotional formulae, Thompson strove to portray the divine directly, in all its terrifying majesty. In this way he is more akin to earlier masters, like Henry Vaughan and George Herbert, than to the poets of his own day. In his most famous work, "The Hound of Heaven", he describes God not as a remote governing presence but rather as a hunter relentlessly pursuing the reluctant devotee. Thompson's powerful depiction of the numinous relationship has found many admirers, including Tolkien and the renowned yoga master Paramahansa Yogananda, who made his own recording of the poem. © Voices of Today 2015 ungekürzt. Questionable Shapes , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 270min
Questionable Shapes by William Dean Howells. Narrated by Christianne Lupher. With touches of humor, pathos, and romance, author William Dean Howells questions the nature of the spiritual and leaves the answers to the listener in this unusual collection of ghost stories from the 19th century. A famed proponent of literary realism, Howells focuses not on the supernatural elements of ghostly encounters, but on the psychological responses of his characters. He takes his title from Hamlet's words at seeing the ghost of his father: "Thou comest in such a questionable shape that I will speak to thee." Howells' characters are men of reason, men of science, men and women of truth with agnostic leanings. All encounter a mental or spiritual phenomenon they find too real or too practical to deny, and so they, like Hamlet, must approach these "questionable shapes" from their own worldviews and query what they mean. ungekürzt. These Bodies of Water (eBook, ePUB)
Are you not made of Suez silt? How do we know you won't shore our boats by making yourself bigger than we made you?Sabrina Mahfouz once sat in a Whitehall interview room and was interrogated about everything from her political leanings to her private life. It was ostensibly a job interview, but implicit in their demands was the unspoken question: as a woman of Middle Eastern heritage, could she really be trusted?Years later, Sabrina found herself confronting the meaning behind this interrogation, and how it was specifically informed by the British Empire's historical dominance in the Middle East. THESE BODIES OF WATER investigates this history through the Middle Eastern coastlines and waterways that were so vital to the Empire's hold. Interwoven with her own personal experiences, Sabrina combines history, politics, myth and poetry in a devastating examination of this unacknowledged part of Britain's colonial past.Part history, part polemic and part intimate memoir, THESE BODIES OF WATER is a tapestry of writing that tells the story of Britain's relationship with the Middle East in the most revealing terms.- Shop: buecher

Without Fear: The Life and Trial of Bhagat Singh , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 534min
When Bhagat Singh was executed by the British after a sham trial for his involvement in the Lahore Conspiracy Case at the age of 23, he was glorified by the Indians as a martyr for his youth, his defiance and his reckless bravery. It was only many years later, after Independence in 1947, that his writings came to light. Today, it is these that set Bhagat Singh apart and reveal him as not just a hot-headed revolutionary who believed in the cult of the bomb but a widely-read intellectual inspired by the writings of Marx and Lenin, to whom the betterment of Indian society was as important as the ouster of the British. In this book, commemorating the hundredth birth anniversary of this iconic young man, Kuldip Nayar takes a close look at the man behind the martyr: his beliefs, his intellectual leanings, his dreams and his despair. He also explains why Hans Raj Vohra betrayed Bhagat Singh and his comrades and throws new light on Sukhdev, whose loyalties have been questioned by some historians. ungekürzt. Language: English. That was the year we had no food. It's the spring of 1864, and times are hard in Washington County, Arkansas, especially for 13-year-old Travis Ford. He hasn't heard from his father, a sergeant in the Second Arkansas Cavalry, in months. His mother is struggling to make ends meet on the family farm and abandoned sawmill near Poison Spring. All Travis really wants to do is to follow his passion - make up adventure stories in the style of Alexandre Dumas. But the Civil War keeps getting in his way. Since his mother hails from Illinois and has Abolitionist leanings, the Ford family - including Travis' twin sister, Edith, and their seven-year-old brother, Baby Hugh - has few friends to turn to for help, only eccentric Miss Mary Frederick, who owns a cotton plantation down the road, and Uncle Willard Ford, a slave trader in nearby Camden.
