An irresponsible twentysomething comic and his equally shameless grandmother join forces as proud pariahs in this dark and rowdy story of dicey family ties, kindred spirits, bad behavior, and bribery. When Rory’s judgmental mother told him that he took after his grandma Evelyn, he took it as a compliment. The ninety-two-year-old cocktail-toting, offtrack-betting party girl was every bit the troublemaker he was. When she landed at a dead-end nursing home, Rory jumped at the chance to liven things up for bored Evelyn - with vodka, scratch-offs, bingo, and gaming. But even in this modest assisted-living casino, the risk of betrayal was a gamble.Rory Scholl’s Black Sheep is part of This Can’t Be Happening, a collection of four true stories about making the best of a worst-case scenario curated by Kevin Allison, creator of the hit true storytelling podcast RISK! Outrageous, alarming, triumphant, and sometimes embarrassing, these fearless confessionals can be read, or listened to, in one what-on-earth-would-I-do? sitting. ungekürzt. Language: English. In January 1944, 16 black enlisted men gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to begin a cram course that would turn them into the U.S. Navy's first African American officers on active duty. The men believed that if they failed they would set back the course of racial justice, so they banded together and all 16 passed the course. Twelve were commissioned as ensigns and a 13th was made a warrant officer. Years later, these pioneers came to be known as the Golden Thirteen, but at the outset they were treated more as pariahs than pioneers. Often denied the privileges and respect routinely accorded white naval officers, they were given menial assignments unworthy of their abilities and training. Yet despite this discrimination, these inspirational young men broke new ground and opened the door for generations to come. In 1986, oral historian Paul Stillwell began recording the memories of the surviving members of the Golden Thirteen. He also interviewed three white officers who served with and supported the efforts of these men during World War II. This book collects their stories. ungekürzt. Language: English. Susie speaks with George Mason University professor Roger Lancaster, author of Sex Panic and the Punitive State, about his recent New York Times op-ed piece entitled "Sex Offenders: The Last Pariahs". Lancester, who has extensively researched the subject, talks to Susie about the harshness and ineffectiveness of sex-offender laws. Guided by panic, we've put more people behind bars - but that hasn't helped to curb or make children safer from sexual predators. Susie and Roger talk about the problems of sex-offender registries and why politicians are such cowards on this issue. Then, in our "Try This at Home" mailbag, Susie hears from a wife with a story and a question. She fills us in on her successful attempt to turn her husband into a swinger… but now she wonders if she's going over the falls. "Help, I can't stop my libido." Have a question? You can call Susie's hotline at 831-480-5110. And you can send your confidential questions - plus requests for free samples and blog banners! - to susie@susiebright.com. Set in mythical Belle Coeur County in a time not too far from our own, Rose & Poe gloriously re-imagines Shakespeare's The Tempest from the point of view of Caliban and his mother. Rose and her giant, simple son, Poe, live quietly on the fringes of their town - tending their goats and working at odd jobs. Prosper Thorne, banished from his big-city law practice and worrying about his fading memory, obsessively watches over his beloved daughter Miranda. When Poe erupts from the forest one day carrying Miranda's bruised and bloody body, he is arrested, despite his protestations of get help-get help-get help. Overnight, Rose and Poe find themselves pariahs in the county where they have lived all their lives. In the face of bitter hatred and threats from her neighbors, the implacable Rose devotes all her strength to proving Poe's innocence and saving him from prison or worse. Rose & Poe is a tale of a mother's boundless love for an apparently unlovable child, and a stunning fable for our own troubled times. It will stick in your memory like sweet wild honey. ungekürzt.
