Slight Case of Perjury, Hörbuch, Digital, 28min
This episode of the Adventures of Nero Wolfe first aired on April 6, 1951. Nero Wolfe, featured in 46 novels, movies, and television series, first came to radio on April 7, 1943. The great character actor Sydney Greenstreet played him from 1950-51. Wolfe, the "gargantuan gourmet", solved crimes with an attention to detail that rivaled the great Sherlock Holmes. The overweight detective of Rex Stout's novels refused to leave his elegant brownstone on business, sending his wisecracking, two-fisted assistant, Archie Goodwin, out to do his legwork. This peculiar private investigator preferred tending to his beloved orchids over solving crimes. In fact, the only reason he worked at all was to keep up his lavish lifestyle. Language: English. The Two-Witness Rule: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 420min
Assistant District Attorney Scott Marino has been assigned a tough case: the prosecution of Max Gordon, one of the nation's most prominent and successful defense attorneys, who was accused of paying witnesses to commit perjury in a Savannah criminal trial. Some crimes are just different. Murder is the most serious crime committed on an individual, but perjury is the most dangerous to the criminal justice system. While one witness is legally sufficient to prove murder, for perjury, the two-witness rule applies. But the young prosecutor is challenged by more than this unique rule. He must prosecute a cunning lawyer who is defended by another just as crafty. He wants this dishonest attorney disbarred and put away for 10 years. With the stakes so high, Marino faces threats to both his integrity and his life as he prepares for the biggest trial of his young career. This is the third novel by William Eleazer. All of his novels - Savannah Law, The Indictments, and now, The Two-Witness Rule - share the same locale: beautiful and quaint Savannah, Georgia. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Johnson. Tangled Webs: How False Statements are Undermining America: From Martha Stewart to Bernie Madoff , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1147min
Best-selling author James B. Stewart's newsbreaking investigation of our era's most high-profile perjurers, revealing the alarming extent of this national epidemic. Our system of justice rests on a simple proposition: that witnesses will raise their hands and tell the truth. In Tangled Webs, James B. Stewart reveals in vivid detail the consequences of the perjury epidemic that has swept our country, undermining the very foundation of our courts. With many prosecutors, investigators, and participants speaking for the first time, Tangled Webs goes behind the scene of the trials of media and homemaking entrepreneur Martha Stewart; top White House political adviser Lewis "Scooter" Libby; home-run king Barry Bonds; and Wall Street money manager Bernard Madoff. The saga of Martha Stewart's conviction captured the nation, but until now no one has answered the most basic question: Why would Stewart risk prison, put her entire empire in jeopardy, and lie repeatedly to government investigators to save a few hundred thousand dollars in stock gains? Moreover, how exactly was the notoriously meticulous Stewart brought down? Drawing on the accounts of then-deputy attorney general James Comey and U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, Stewart sheds new light on the Libby investigation, making clear how far into the White House the Valerie Plame CIA scandal extended, and why Libby took the fall. In San Francisco, Giants home-run king Barry Bonds faces trial due to his testimony before a grand jury investigating the use of illegal steroids in sports. Bonds was warned explicitly that the only crime he faced was perjury. Stewart unlocks the story behind the mounting evidence that he nonetheless lied under oath. Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme is infamous, but less well known is how he eluded detection for so long in the face of repeated investigations. Of the four he is the only one who has admitted to lying. The perjury outbreak is sy ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Kramer. Barry Bonds is an American former professional baseball left fielder who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants. Bonds received seven NL MVP awards and 14 All-Star selections, and is considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Bonds was regarded as an exceptional hitter, and finished his regular season career with a very high on-base percentage (.444) and isolated power (.309). He holds many MLB hitting records, including most career home runs, most home runs in a single season (73, set in 2001) and most career walks. He also received eight Gold Gloves for his defense in the outfield. He is ranked second in career Wins Above Replacement among all major league position players by both Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference.com, behind only Babe Ruth. Bonds led a controversial career, notably as a central figure in baseball's steroids scandal. In 2007, he was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to the grand jury during the federal government's investigation of BALCO. The perjury charges against Bonds were dropped, and he was also initially convicted of obstruction of justice, but that was overturned in 2015. Bonds has not been elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first four years of eligibility. In 2016, Bonds served as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins for one season. ungekürzt.
