Learning From Strangers is the definitive work on qualitative research interviewing. It draws on Robert Weiss's 30 years of experience in interviewing and teaching others how to do it. The most effective interviews, says Weiss, rely on creating cooperation - an open and trusting alliance between interviewer and respondent, dedicated to specific and honest accounts of both internal and external events. Against the eclectic background of his work in national sample surveys, studies based on semi-structured interviewing, and participant observation, Weiss walks the listener through the method of qualitative interview studies: sample selection, development of an interview guide, the conduct of the interview, analysis, and preparation of the data. Weiss gives examples of successful and less successful interviews and offers specific techniques and guidelines for the practitioner. Learning From Strangers is wonderfully narrated by Dan Gallagher. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Gallagher. City girl meets country girl. Natalie's life is on a precipice with too many failed career moves in the last year. Faced with the loss of everything she has ever worked for, Natalie looks for a way to get out of the city and realign her priorities. When Jessica Morgan places an ad for a new farmhand, she doesn't expect to hear from an urbanite. And when the respondent turns out to be gorgeous Natalie Wells, she's really at a loss for words! Natalie thinks taking a job in the country is a great plan, until she realizes she's attracted to her boss. When she learns her boss's bias against her is the result of issues with an ex-girlfriend, Natalie realizes she's not imagining the sparks between them - that Jess might just be open to a new relationship, if only Natalie can prove she belongs in Jess's life. The last thing Jess needs is a new love interest, especially one who works for her! But she can't deny Natalie is pretty darn cute trying to learn her way around the farm and as she falls in love, Jess wonders if there's a chance for romance with the city girl.... ungekürzt. Sir Charles Dilke was born in 1843 and died in 1911. His career is one of the mysteries and tragedies of 19th-century history. In the summer of 1885 he was the youngest man in the outgoing cabinet and Gladstone's most likely successor as leader of the Liberal party. But his great expectations were shattered when in July 1885 Donald Crawford, a Liberal candidate, began divorce proceedings against his 22-year-old wife, citing Dilke as co-respondent. There were two hearings, during the second of which Mrs Crawford made the most sensational allegations and in the end Dilke lost. He maintained his innocence to his dying day and despite his public disgrace there were many who believed him. First published in 1958, Dilke is a story with a climax as exciting as it is mysterious and which bears continuing relevance to the private lives of public figures. Elected to Parliament as a Labour member in 1948, Roy Jenkins (1920- 2003) served in several major posts in Harold Wilson's first government and as home secretary from 1965-1967. In 1987, Jenkins was elected to succeed Harold Macmillan as chancellor of the University of Oxford, following the latter's death, a position he held until his death. Jenkins grew to political maturity during the twilight of a great age of British parliamentary democracy. As much as Churchill, though in quite a different way, Jenkins has been from the cradle a creature of the system that nurtured Palmerston and Disraeli, Gladstone, Asquith, and Lloyd George. ungekürzt. NY Times best-selling author David L. Robbins (War of the Rats, The Devil's Waters, The Empty Quarter) creates a modern comic fable of love, depth and insightful humor.  Wes Turner, an aging, careworn helicopter pilot in South Carolina, learns out of the blue that he is a father and grandfather. His new family has found him and embraces him, but Wes doesn't trust that love can come without a price tag.  A continent away in California, Dante LaBella can't commit to his beloved girlfriend Natalie; he breaks up with her one too many times, then she refuses to take him back. In a moment of metaphoric pleading, he offers her the choice of a finger as a display of his devotion. Natalie takes him up on it, selecting the pinky of his left hand. "The love I want with you," she says, "the love I need you to understand, is forever. Nothing's forever like nine fingers."  Dante recoils from cutting off his little finger. He seeks counsel from a friend, a local radio personality who inadvertently puts the quandary on the air. The reaction from the public is swift, loud and widespread as the cost of true love is weighed out in public. Most callers say it's a crazy idea, but a few, some sad and knowing voices, agree that true love is worth any price, even cutting off a pinky. "Yeah. With a butter knife," says one respondent. Another listener to the broadcast is the most powerful talk show host in America: Nanette Towne. Nanette convinces Dante and Natalie to be guests on her nationwide show, where in front of America she asks the question: at what cost love?  Back in South Carolina, Wes, watching Nanette's show, at last sees the answer to the same burning question in his own life: what to pay for love? He determines the price love wants is for him to drive cross-country and make certain that Dante pays the price too: Dante must give love his finger.  ungekürzt. Language: English.
