    The 251st Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy London in a review recorded at the press view on 3rd June 2019. This year over 16000 works were submitted to the Summer Exhibition, at a fee of £35 per entry. The hanging committee included artists Jane and Louise Wilson, Hughie O’Donoghue and senior Academician Barbara Rae, and was led by coordinator Jock McFadyen. He described viewing all the digital submissions over a period of two weeks, reducing the number to 2000 physical works. These were accommodated into the gallery for a final selection for the exhibition.  The Summer Exhibition is most popular event in the nation’s cultural calendar, and commercially the most successful. It allows works in all media, print/photography/painting/sculpture/architectural models - with rooms arranged by different Royal Academicians, some of whom, like Barbara Rae’s Arctic room, set a theme to their hang. Apparently it was made in an instant, like the flow of a Zen master.     Review of the exhibition of visionary artist William Blake at Tate Britain, September 2019. The exhibition is arranged in eight rooms of the downstairs gallery spaces of Tate Britain, low-lit, maroon-painted walls, a very comprehensive collection of a highly original and complex visionary creator. Blake’s parents ran a successful hosiery and haberdashery shop in Broad Street Soho, in a local inhabited by well-to-do middle classes; bankers, fashionistas, gentry. Born in 1757, Blake felt his calling was to art from childhood, and he was encouraged by his parents purchase of colours, paints and casts, and support for his studies at the Royal Academy. His early studies, carefully completed works from the figure show a degree of competence and conscientious determination. It is precisely here that the original vision is inseminated: the pale grisaille ink and watercolour conceptions plant classical statuesque models into a supernatural arena of unfettered imagination. The canon of Western art, of Titian, Veronese, Michelangelo, Raphael, are absorbed by Blake but regurgitated as something quite alien and spectral, subject to a passionate and individual sensibility. ungekürzt.     'AIDS art' is essentially an American invention. It has now manifested itself in a large number of different locations, but is almost invariably based on a model of artistic activity that evolved in the United States - one that was a response to the impact made by the epidemic on sections of American society. This means, among other things, that the best-known artworks connected with AIDS have nearly always had homosexual themes. The social and economic effect of heterosexually transmitted AIDS in Africa has, by contrast, played a distinctly minor role. AIDS art enterprises in Africa - for example, in South Africa with embroideries made by Zulu women; in Togo with t-shirts printed with messages addressed to young people - have inevitably seemed like paler copies of things that had already been done in the United States. They have also, much more than is the case with their American exemplars, seemed like bourgeois enterprises with no lasting social impact at any deep level.     A recorded visit to an exhibition by Anish Kapoor at the Lisson Gallery, London continued to 22nd June, 2019. Includes descriptions of works and bio-dara of the artist. In the rear ground floor space of the gallery a suite of new paintings, completed at the end of 2018. Each canvas is 274 cms tall by 213 cms wide. The colour range is restricted and highly pitched, a distinctly abstract expressionist handling with sweeping brush and hand work. An aggressive and confrontational approach infuses a violently striated surface. A basic pink shape, in some like sagging flesh or an upturned vessel is worked with smeared white strokes, then corrupted by slashed veins of blood red and pitch black, scarring the lower part of the canvases. The hand work introduces an element of unleashed energy on the white ground, in a scheme of unleashed emotion. It is violently expressive, chaotic and turbulent. The painting ‘Teeth’ 2018 resembles a tip tilted jug spewing corrupted matter. These recent paintings progress of the artist’s constant preoccupation with the life force of the body. Previously viewed in the giant ‘Leviathan’; a maroon inflatable of spectacular dimension installed in Monumenta 2011 at the Grand Palais Paris. Here visitors walked inside the heart shaped cavern, encountering receding passages of valves and vents. Kapoor has never resisted dynamic scale for maximum resonance of effect. Language: English. Vitrines framed with broad metal casing contain accumulations of mixed media, the Superstrings. On closer attention, scrawed on the glass formulas for the scientific specialist, e.g. in Vitrine number 1 to the left reads Vu+xqa i/2 kud(lodk)ekx, whatever that means. Behind this a confusion of coiled cord, tangled loops of white and black lengths, suspended against a bleached-out suggestion of industrial landscape, silhouetted shapes of buildings and chimneys. Another formula scrawled on the glass. V(Nkov):xeinx encased. Are these scientific string theory? (1) In this panel the bunched confusion of cords lies on a silvered textured ground, which may be canvas but resembles parchment. In the fourth vitrine is a mesh of wire squared grid imposed over an absolute forest of black cord, fused and gutted, with white cord disposed at the base. The message seems to be the toppled towers of science, corrupted by the sensual intuitive surge of the artwork. The formulae are reduced to a scrawled nonsense. It’s on canvas dated 1982 and signed lower left. The green is painted in a random ventilated grid over the hyper-intense pink with a bold line of a green stripe on the top edge of the work, which is encased in a glass vitrine. Next to this, Wayne Thiebaud, pop painter of the primary movement in the 1960s. Always a strongly composed small-scale panel shows an aerial view of a highway and sports arena. Its neighbor, a classic signature Thiebaud of an array of cakes and pastries, described in mouthwatering swirls of oil paint.Jean Dubuffet figures frequently in the art fair; here is a piece dated 1963. Abstract expressionist slash marks of brown revealed through patches of pink, cream, and white in vigorous calligraphic swirls. A powerful and early Francis Bacon "Study for a Figure", 1950. An intensely felt statement, carrying the conviction of the post-war period before his vision became dandified, repetitive, and formulaic. The ground is charcoal grey in thinly washed vertical strokes. The male body emerges convulsively, a bulging tangle of pecs and biceps and hunched powerful shoulders. The figure is imprisoned in the familiar white outline cage, and there is a counterpoint thin red line identifying the lower edge of the canvas. ungekürzt. Language: English.
