Humour in Language Education
This book has been written on the assumption that aview of life based on the humorous acceptance of aplurality of meanings is more comprehensive andrewarding than one which takes for granted theexistence of one real world, which separates humourfrom the realm of the serious. This view canconstitute the source of an interest in theexamination of humour in a social settingtraditionally associated with solemnity, i.e. theclassroom. The present study is about the role ofhumour in language education, focusing principally onthe examination of humorous interaction. The studyuses spoken data in a naturalistic setting and drawson traditions of classroom discourse analysis, conversation analysis and (micro)ethnography. Foreignlanguage classroom-specific humour is described, aform of humour characteristic of foreign languageclassrooms, which facilitates learning bytransmitting knowledge in the form of humorous talkaround the text. The conclusions should be especiallyuseful to textbook writers, teachers and teachereducators who may be interested in using humour intheir language classes.- Shop: buecher

Tales from Atlantis, Volume I , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 66min
This collection includes three stories: "Atlantis": A haunting poem from the ghost-like underwater depths. "The Last Incantation": With inhuman solemnity, the voice of the necromancer went on in a priest-like chant until the last echoes died out in hollow, sepulchral vibrations. Then the colored vapors cleared away. But the pale, unearthly glow still filled the changer, and between Malygris and the door where hung the unicorn's head there stood the apparition of Nylissa! "The Death of Malygris": Groping along tortuous alleys, through blind caverns, and down subterranean halls and steps, 12 of the most-powerful sorcerers of Susran were brought together in a vault of oozing, death-gray granite, far beneath the foundations of the palace. The 12 sorcerers knew that the king had convened them only because of a matter supremely grave and secret. For a while, there was silence in the vault, and the 12, bowing deferentially, waited. Then, in a voice that was little more than a harsh whisper, the king spoke: "What know ye of Malygris?" ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Gallant. Non-Religious Funeral Readings: Philosophy and Poetry for Secular Services , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 51min
To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. In recent years non-religious funerals have become more common, but without an established canon of texts to fall back on, it can be difficult to plan an appropriate service for a loved one who had no religious belief or connections. Texts recommended by secular humanists, especially modern texts, can sometimes sound trite or overly informal. This book, however, provides opening sentences, texts, and sentences for committal and/or dispersal from some of the greatest philosophers and writers in history including Marcus Aurelius, Plato, Christina Rossetti, Shakespeare and Rabindranath Tagore. They retain the solemnity, grandeur and dignity of the traditional language of Christian funerals found in the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, but make no dogmatic references to religion, the supernatural or life after death; beliefs which many today do not or cannot hold. Instead, the texts offer a positive philosophical approach to death, and a celebration of the life and memory of the departed. This book will be suitable for anybody planning the funeral of a loved one, or for officiants at secular humanist funerals. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Braxton Wilhelmsen. BRAINSPOTTING (eBook, ePUB)
As a trainee doctor, Andrew Lees was enthralled by his mentors: esteemed neurologists who combined the precision of mathematicians,¿the scrupulosity of entomologists and the solemnity of undertakers in their diagnoses and treatments. For them, there was no such thing as an unexplained symptom or psychosomatic problem - no difficult cases, only interesting ones - and it was only a matter of time before all disorders of the brain would be understood in terms of anatomical¿electrical and chemical connections. Today, this kind of 'holistic neurology' is on the brink of extinction as a slavish adherence to protocols and algorithms - plus a worship of machines - runs the risk of destroying the key foundational clinical skills of listening, observation and imagination that have been at the heart of the discipline for over 150 years. In this series of brilliant, insightful and autobiographical essays, Andrew Lees takes us on a kind of Sherlock Holmes tour of neurology, giving the reader insight into - and defending - the deep analytical tools that the best neurologists still rely on to diagnose patients: to heal minds and to fix brains.- Shop: buecher

All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 668min
The affair is a military wedding. The groom's parents are the Bradwins, one of the oldest and most distinguished families in Virginia. The family head, General 'Boss' Bradwin, is a famous army officer. Of all his prized sons, his youngest, 'Clipper' Bradwin, is the most promising. First in his class at Blue Ridge Military Academy, graduate with all honors, he is now entering into holy matrimony and then into wartime service of his country. What will begin, however, with the solemnity of his marriage vows will end in the echoing screams of the damned - an ungodly spectacle of spilled blood and sobbing, throat-aching terror. For this distinguished family is like no other on earth. There is a curse on their blood. Their family history is rooted not in magnolia and honeysuckle, but in darkness and demonism, in frightening forces beyond their knowledge and control. Their august history begins not in antebellum mansions, but with supernatural sorcery in the ancient rites and rituals of dark African jungles. There is a curse that grips the Bradwins from generation to generation, from horror to bloody horror, and that climaxes in a spine-chilling nightmare of black occultism and blood vengeance. ungekürzt. The Poison Belt , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 221min
'You will conceive a bunch of grapes,' said he, 'which are covered by some infinitesimal but noxious bacillus. The gardener passes it through a disinfecting medium. It may be that he desires his grapes to be cleaner. It may be that he needs space to breed some fresh bacillus less noxious than the last. He dips it into the poison, and they are gone. Our gardener is, in my opinion, about to dip the solar system, and the human bacillus, the little mortal vibrio which twisted and wriggled upon the outer rind of the earth, will in an instant be sterilised out of existence.' And so Professor Challenger makes plans to ensure that he and his wife and three close friends are immune from the effects of the 'disinfecting medium', the poison belt, for as long as possible. As in The Lost World, Conan Doyle had these ideas long before our modern filmmakers, and his elucidation of scientific concepts in these adventurous and thrilling tales had enormous appeal for an audience which gained its knowledge from books. Sadly, the novel's ultimate appeal that 'solemnity and humility' would 'be the foundations upon which a more earnest and reverent race may build a more worthy temple' fell on stony ground. Within a year of its publication, most of Europe was embroiled in the most horrifying conflict the planet had ever witnessed, in which poisonous gas was to play an horrendous part. ungekürzt. The Gridiron: Thoughts About the Christian Year and Other Things , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 87min
The year begins with the season of Advent, when we think of the first coming of Jesus into the world and the way in which it was prepared for his coming. Then follows Christmas, the well-known and popular festival when we remember the Saviour’s birth to a Jewish lady, Mary. This is followed by the Epiphany, when the Lord was first shown to the non-Jewish people, the Gentiles. Quite a significant event for those not of the Jewish faith. It is the first recorded time that the Lord was shown to non-Jewish people (Gentiles), reminding us that he came for everyone. Things move on rapidly to Lent, and the Lord’s life, which leads up to his Crucifixion. Appropriately, the solemnity of Lent and Holy Week is followed by the joyful season of Easter, when we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. Forty days on, and we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord. It is not long after the Ascension that the church celebrates Pentecost (or Whitsun), when the Holy Spirit of God descended on the church and kick-started it into action — action that continues to this day! As you may know, the rest of the year, up until Advent, is taken up by the season of Trinity, with much teaching and many commemorations. I hope that you enjoy this tour through the Christian year and that it deepens and makes more relevant your practice of faith in Christ Crucified, Risen, and Ascended. ungekürzt. Language: English.
