Nobody Out There
Southie is Adelaide musician Tim Lucas, whose unique brand of folk pop combines acoustic guitar, piano and drum sequences, drawing on such influences as Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens and The Postal Service. This marks Southie's debut with a collection of truly varied folk pop songs. The edgy acoustic opener Wait Here connects two pulsing hearts, one earnest yet unsure, the other slow and steady, then spills into the desperate anthem of Silver Dimes, which strikes like a fist pounding against your chest. There is brightness in Hey Love and Your Arms (sweetened by the voice of Illicit Eve's Emily Smart), darker moments in songs like Dollars & Diamonds and Be Done (a song that echoes like a raw, rootsy death-rattle) while the energetic rock of Made of Metal climaxes in an unforgettable rallying of trumpets, voices, drums and guitars. The EP closes out with the eponymous track Nobody Out There, a soft, lonely call into the vast and empty night, that swells briefly to a powerful chant, before receding into the static hum of distant voices.- Shop: odax

Love Is War
Jack Byrne has greatly refined his six-string stylings on his 2010 EP Love Is War, a collection of heartfelt acoustic tunes. While many singer/songwriters employ backing bands or use involved arrangements, Byrne allows his natural talents to shine through, letting his compositions focus almost exclusively on his strong guitar-playing and singing. In his music, Byrne channels the hushed folky tones of greats like Iron & Wine or Simon and Garfunkel. While the vocals of these artists can often be more subdued, Byrne's voice is powerful and present-it's truly an additional part of the instrumentation and not just a method to convey his lyrics. Thematically, this is an introspective record that focuses on, as you might have guessed, love. Even at their most narrative, the lyrics still reveal a deeper emotional insight into each track's subject. The songs are at their best when Byrne weaves his intricate finger-picking and vocal harmonies into his arrangements. This is most notable in standout tracks "Lioness" and "I Ate Civilization," with the latter featuring amazing ghostly layered harmony, quite reminiscent of Grizzly Bear. Another highlight is "Without Looking Back," where Byrne does his best Sufjan Stevens imitation, breaking into an unfaltering falsetto, while singing about sneaking away from the world with a lover. Overall, this is an excellent EP, well worth a listen for enjoying the complexity of it's simplicity. -Kevin Junker (of supertonicmedia.com)- Shop: odax

Cure for Sleep
It began with a nightmare. When he woke, Jascha Hoffman decided to keep track of his dreams on a blog. Then he began to set them to music. In this way he accumulated a sort of pop dream diary, a set of vulnerable and eccentric songs at the heart of his debut album, *A Cure for Sleep*... With their unexpected twists, the songs on A Cure for Sleep open up a world of intimacy and loneliness. They have the playfulness of Regina Spektor, the vulnerability of Sufjan Stevens, and the wit of the Magnetic Fields. Like dreams they cover a wide range of moods and registers-lullabies and laments, hymns and whodunits. A Cure for Sleep features an impressive roster of musical talent, from string players Loren Ludwig and Dina Maccabee (Wilco) to Norwegian guitarist Bjørn Solli. It was produced by Jesse Olsen and recorded in San Francisco by Scott McDowell (Sean Hayes, Billy Joel), with a dreamlike cover designed by Shawn Feeney (ILM). Since cutting the record Jascha (ya-sha) has embarked on an experiment in open-source songwriting by inviting fans to critique budding songs at jaschavsjascha.com. As a result, hundreds of listeners on Facebook and other social networking sites will have the chance to contribute to the next album.- Shop: odax

Thick Skin
Audrey Ryan is a multi-instrumentalist, one-man-band act on most occasions, best known for her ability to play drums to her live guitar loops and accordion creating a full band sound from just one person onstage. However, her new record "Thick Skin" is a departure from that one-person sound to the polar opposite of multi-track recording with as many as 20 instruments on some songs. The result is an orchestral sound that harkens Sufjan Stevens and Bjork in it's ambience and instrumentation. "Thick Skin" features 10 original songs by Audrey. On them she plays guitar, accordion, piano, violin, and vibraphone, while recruiting talented friends on clarinet, trumpet, and pedal steel to round out the sound. Each song is a captured moment, of feelings like loneliness, of memory and nostalgia. Audrey's songwriting has been praised with her international releases "Dishes & Pills" (2007) and "I Know, I Know" (2009), yet "Thick Skin" (2011) raising the bar with fresh, refined and complex songs and arrangements. Hailing from Mount Desert Island on the coast of Maine, Audrey now lives in the Boston area and tours nationally and internationally (Folkwit Records, UK). She has opened for They Might be Giants, Suzanne Vega, Josh Ritter, Grace Potter, Ra Ra Riot, among others. She was nominated 'Outstanding Singer-songwriter of the Year' in 2008 and 'Best Folk Act' in 2009 at the Boston Music Awards and 'Best Folk' in 2009 and 'Best Female Vocalist' in 2010 at the Boston Phoenix Music Poll. She was also the winner of "the River 92.5 RiverRising Star" contest in 2009.- Shop: odax

All Star Heart
Rob Falgiano lives under the Big Singer-Songwriter Tent, but the passionate Buffalo, NY, artist has more diverse. Eclectic influences than many strummers. He breaks musical eggs, and his style continues to evolve with each recording. This time around the mash includes - electro-pop beats, huge synth-bass low end riffage, sweet, bright, rhythmic acoustic guitars, various ambient blips and bleeps, thumping kick drums, latin-influenced grooves, real live string quartets, plus respect for classic pop songwriting (Beatles being kings on that front) and even some alt-country twang. There are no barriers between genres - only those we invent in our heads. Newer influences include underground jazz-based hip-hop-soul (Q-Tip, Dwele, J-Live) and LA electro-pop-rock (Bird & The Bee, Cake), and the smashup is what thrills the artist, who follows where new sonic interests lead. Lyrically Rob varies it up: sometimes there's a traditional narrative, and other times pure abstraction. Sincere, saucy, sweet, and sad take turns or get swirled together. It's about the feeling. You'll find catchy, uplifting melodies back to back with dark expressions of desolation. Whatever works and is true. Falgiano has 4 independent full-length solo CDs, and 7 discs in all. All Star Heart - an 18-song, 69-minute opus - is released May, 2010. His style has drawn comparisons to alternative-acoustic-pop artists like Elliott Smith, Damien Rice, Feist, Smiths, Old 97s, Sufjan Stevens, Prefab Sprout, David Byrne, and even John Mayer (is that good or bad?). Opening slots for more than a dozen nationals include: Jakob Dylan, Nickel Creek, Ingrid Michaelson, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Nellie McKay, 10,000 Maniacs, The Pushstars, Goo Goo Dolls, Emerson Hart (ex-Tonic), 54-40, Deep Blue Something, The Pursuit of Happiness, and Kevin Hearn (of Barenaked Ladies). He performs extensively, averaging 50-80 gigs a year. Rob's music has been heard on TV shows 'Felicity' (WB), as well as 'The Black Donnellys' (NBC), 'Everwood' (CW-ABC Family), and 'Jack and Bobby' (WB). PRESS QUOTES: 'Daring and delicately understated.' - Artvoice 'The album is gorgeous. His music smacks of a hard-won humanism, tempered by a clearly blossoming songwriting talent.' - The Buffalo News 'What's impressive about your work is your unwillingness to settle for the obvious. More challenging than simply crafting a pop tune, but when you put the elements together properly the sky's the limit.' - Taxi.com 'Falgiano is more interested in making an album of value instead of writing one for the casual crowd.' - SoundtheSirens.com 'Many will be won over by Rob's voice alone, Neil Finn-like on the opener and sporting a mellow-soul falsetto.' - Muse's Muse 'Falgiano should be a household name.' - BestofWNY.com.- Shop: odax

People Really Live This Way
Scott Malyszka is a popular, imaginative folk performer in northern Virginia. He plays rowdy flatpick guitar, sings with a touch of the Blue Ridge mountains, and saws the fiddle with energy and old-time tone. He performs solo and with a local string band called Feel The Wag. This CD of mostly original material showcases Scott's imaginative songwriting, influenced by folks such as Devon Sproule, Danny Schmidt, Gillian Welch, and Old Crow Medicine Show, and maybe even a touch of Tom Waits and Suzanne Vega. These songs are romantic stories, mostly joyful with a few bitter spots. Hard-crafted songs that take you someplace, they read like little novels. This CD is decidedly less introspective than Scott's previous record, 'I Don't Have Friends Anymore.' On the recording process, Scott says: 'I said something to my friend Harny that I should get some mike preamps so I could record better demos at home. Next time I saw him he hands me a couple tube preamps. I record the demos, and they sounded pretty good to me, so I decided to just make them into this CD.' The analog sound is influenced by some great lo-fi records starting with Bob Dylan's 'Basement Tapes.' There's Paul Westerberg, Sufjan Stevens, and all the great bluegrass and rock-and-roll records from decades ago. It sounds like what it is--a folk music record from Virginia. Instrumentation includes dreadnaught 6- and 12-string guitars, harmonica, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, percussion, and bass. Scott's comments on the songs: Carrie And I: romance versus religion set in autumn around Jerusalem's old city Already Wicked: Envy and disdain for natural misfit lovers, set in the spring. People Really Live This Way: Two happy people in the summertime Backwards Town: Can't wait to get out of here and start over. This town is just full of bad relationships for me. Jenny: Young philanthropists from different sides of the tracks get snowed in together Don't Talk To Me About Tomorrow: One of the first songs I ever wrote. I was reading the Sermon On the Mount in September '89 starting my last year at Bible college, especially the passage on 'consider the lilies.' I was bumbling through trying to get a girlfriend. I was blown away by Roy Book Binder's acoustic blues picking and sassy lyrics a few weeks earlier at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA. All those ingredients are in this song. Walking Shoes: Winter romance, with my messy attempt at the Banish Misfortune jig, just a laugh out in the snow Pickup: Another of the very first songs I ever wrote. I came up with it in '89 while riding in the back of a pickup driving home from Maryland to Pennsylvania with friends after we played a little July show in a church for about ten people. Johnny Ramone: My guitar part is my attempt to imitate the brilliant playing of Suzanne Vega. Not sure where the lyrics came from, though Cat Stevens's 'Father And Son' uses a similar two-voice form and has always touched me. Life is hard on little kids sometimes. Golden Slippers: People always ask me to play and sing this great old song when I have my fiddle.- Shop: odax

Tasha Sits Close To The Piano
Known to fans as a member of Local Natives, he has been writing his own brand of moody piano-centric songs for the last 10 years. As Local Natives geared up to release their third album, Ayer booked time in the same LA studio, Electro-Vox and in a three-day burst he recorded seven of his own songs. Playing on the studio s grand and upright pianos, Ayer allowed his emotional intuition to lead the way while working on his dark, dramatic music. The piano is a centerpiece, whether out front on its own like on the opening track Jaws of Love. or ushering in a maelstrom of synth programming as on Microwaves. As the Radiohead recalling final song, Nightlight., starts and ends with Ayer s simple, rhythmic piano chords and gentle croon, Jaws of Love. s place and power are cemented. TRACKS: 1. Jaws of Love. 2. Hawaiian License Plates. 3. Lake Tahoe. 4. Microwaves 5. Shrink... 6. Everything. 7. Love Me Like I m Gone. 8. Before the Hurting Lands. 9. Costa Rica. 10. Nightlight.- Shop: odax

Phone Power
"Phone Power" enthält 18 überbordende Pop-Gemmen in der klassischen "all killer, no filler"-Tradition der Band.

It Might Take A While
Besagtes Album heißt "It Might Take A While", da wird das eben beschriebene Gefühl deutlich. - Ozelot- Shop: odax

Didn`t He Ramble
