It was the spring of 1987, and crack cocaine had turned whole swaths of Detroit into veritable combat zones. The city thought it had seen everything - until one evening that May, when the police arrested a 17-year-old kid named Rick Wershe. They called him White Boy Rick. In a city known for its fraught racial divide, Wershe had somehow joined the ranks of the drug kingpins on the predominantly black East Side before he was old enough to shave. He flew in kilos of cocaine from Miami and drove a white Jeep with THE SNOWMAN emblazoned across the back. An incredulous judge once compared him to the gangster "Baby Face" Nelson. He seemed more an urban legend than a real person - and then his story got even stranger. Years later, while he was in prison for cocaine possession, Wershe claimed he had been working with the FBI since he was 14. Was one of Detroit’s most notorious criminals also one of the feds’ most valuable informants in the city? Journalist Evan Hughes set out to untangle fact from fiction in Wershe’s improbable story, tracking down the dealers, cops, and federal agents who shared the streets with him and eventually meeting Wershe himself at the rural Michigan prison where he remains incarcerated. The Trials of White Boy Rick is a gripping true-crime saga of hidden motives and betrayed trust - and reveals never-before-reported information suggesting why Wershe is still behind bars. ungekürzt. When sinkholes plague the city of Corona, things get real. Sterling: Rebel Earth Master I’ve never been particularly proud of the stinking cesspool known as Corona, but for better or worse, it’s still my home. And as a newly minted Earth Master, I take particular umbrage when it starts to collapse. Sinkholes are hardly breaking news, but now that the original Masters’ proteges have unseated them, huge swaths of the city are falling in. Is it ineptitude? Neglect? Or some elaborate plan to lure us into a trap and harvest our magical energy? Whatever the reason, we can’t just stand by and watch the the city cave in. The public is still blind to the Masters’ corruption, and those glorified frat boys can wield a stunning amount of magic without even breaking a sweat. But the Rebels share a special bond - when we combine our powers, it’s awesome. And when we combine our naughty parts, it’s even better. If only all five of us could get on board with the arrangement. Zephyr and I have set aside our differences, and that kinkhound Rain is in his glory. But whenever things heat up, Ember makes a flimsy excuse to leave the rest of us to our own devices. We need everyone on board, even our long-suffering Fire Master...before anyone else gets buried. Urban fantasy fans will adore this medium-burn reverse harem filled with action, intrigue, and magic. Is Organic Worth the Price?$8 for organic milk. Sure, you could spend half as much, but it’s worth it to know that you’re supporting a small family farm where the cows can munch on green grass all day. Plus, you’re not drinking nasty hormones and chemicals, and you’re doing your part to save the environment. Seems like you’re winning all around, but what would you do if that picture of the happy farm, the personal health, and the clean air and water turned out not to be so pretty? What if organic isn't all it's hyped up to be?What if organic produce only had marginally less pesticide residues than conventional produce? What if the organic, grass-fed beef cows ended up on the very same feedlots as factory-farmed, grain-fed beef cows? What if large swaths of the country were being taken over by huge corporate-owned farming operations, organic farming operations that were destroying the landscape and depleting the soil? Organic is much more complicated than we’ve been led to believe. From the scale to the possible health implications of pesticides to the treatment of animals, it’s not a black and white issue.Natural Deception takes a sobering look at one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. We find that organic may be one more buzz phrase used to sell products rather than a movement really concerned for the wellbeing of our planet and its inhabitants. In the spirit of an undercover news reporter, author Joey Lott takes us through the organic food industry point by point, examining our assumptions and revealing the truth. Find out what major corporation owns your favorite small organic brand. Examine whether pesticides may be a health detriment or even partially beneficial. ungekürzt. Language: English. Leonardo Romano has made an independent fortune as a boutique hotel magnate. He has the golden touch when it comes to creating luxurious accommodations, but the one thing Leonardo has avoided is following in his Grandfather’s footsteps. Running the family’s original hotel, the Romano Resort, on the island of Sicily, is a job he’s never felt fated to revive. However, now that his brothers have done their parts in securing and remodeling the hotel, it’s up to Leonardo to do what he does best: entice visitors to revel in the lap of luxury.Stella Brown is on her last strike. As a historical preservationist she’s just committed the mortal sin of losing a historical property to modern renovations, therefore losing a piece of history. Forever. Now Stella is tasked with proving she can still do her job by halting the Romano Resort’s extravagant renovations and getting them to conform to international preservation laws. Stella isn’t a pushy person, but she’s ready to go to war to save this little piece of Sicily. But Stella finds it’s not just the island that’s stunning: the man who owns the resort is gorgeous too. Beautiful and bold, Leonardo is no stranger to bending laws and women to his will, but in Stella he’ll find a sunny beauty with a spine of steel -- one that’s ready to shut down the hotel rather than see its historical significance erased in swaths of cashmere and gold plated toilets. As the two connect over their desire to see the Hotel Romano refinished properly, they’ll find their views of each other building to passionate proportions. As time runs out and luxury continues to battle with laws, they’ll have to decide if compromise is possible or if everything will turn to dust. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Connor Brown. 2016 Election Fairy Tales was inspired by watching this crazy election unfold, as the conflict turned into a circus and prize fight. Instead of the usual debate about issues and opinions, the campaign became an arena of high drama, especially for Republicans, as Donald Trump, once considered just a reality show entertainer, captured the anti-establishment vote and became the front runner. Along the way, he insulted large swaths of people from woman and Mexicans to Muslims, the media, and other candidates, and he combined misstatements and lies with vulgar language and jokes. But the more outrageous his remarks, the more he got more supporters, and soon the other candidates responded in kind. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton battled it out with Bernie Sanders, and they escalated their attacks on each other. This growing conflict led me to think of the way traditional fairy tales can help to explain what's going on and suggest possible outcomes, since these tales recount in a simple way the battle between good and evil from the perspective of the less powerful who are up against the more powerful. Then, they commonly manage to outwit the villains and win, though the outcome of this election is still unknown. It's in that spirit that I wrote these fairy tales describing what's going on in the election today. The nine fairy tales include: "Two Fairy Tales About Donald Trump" "Snow White and the Seven Candidates" "Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Trump" "The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Trump" "Golditrump and the Three Bears" "Hansel and Gretel and the Gingertrump House" "Chicken Little and the Boy Who Cried Trump" ungekürzt. On October 21, 1600, two massive Japanese armies, totaling an estimated 200,000 soldiers - armed to the teeth with swords, yari (spears), arrows, muskets, and cannons - faced off on a battlefield near the town of Sekigahara. A bitter fight to the death ensued, and the results would determine the course of Japanese history for the next 250 years. On the battlefield was the warlord Ieyasu Tokugawa, a man desiring domain over the entire island of Japan, but standing in his way was Ishida Mitsunari, a warlord controlling vast swaths of western Japan. Moving with his armies from the east, Ieyasu maneuvered into a position at Sekigahara. Ieyasu was relying heavily on the legendary Japanese samurai, but contrary to popular belief, the samurai warriors of that era were avid firearm users, and this battle would be no exception, as both armies bristled with muskets and cannons. Ieyasu was outnumbered, but he had a trump card: traitors placed in the enemy army. These treacherous warlords would join Ieyasu in the midst of the battle, turning it in his favor. When Ieyasu became shogun (military dictator) of Japan, he presided over the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate, which brought peace and stability to all of Japan if only by ending the constant civil wars. Many changes took place, most notably in the capabilities of the samurai, Japan’s ruling military class, who were no longer active combat participants. Instead, most of these warriors were fighters in name only, ruling, instead, as privileged bureaucrats. They served the Tokugawa Shogunate, a military government that moved to isolate Japan from the rest of the world for more than two centuries. Military service became the exclusive domain of a privileged warrior class that combined the military with an intricate network of social status and vassalage to feudal lords. ungekürzt. The continually expanding popularity of Anguilla, especially with the rich and famous, has caught everyone by surprise. After all, at first glance Anguilla looks to be nothing special. It is a long, narrow, flat island, 16 miles long by three miles wide, with constant droughts and a notable absence of the lush rainforests, beautiful mountains, rushing rivers, or deep canyons that normally provide all the activities tourists clamor for. But Anguilla's trump card is its beaches. Spectacular even in this region, where above-average beaches are the norm, Anguilla's wide swaths of sparkling white sand and bright turquoise waters teeming with tropical fish are indeed something special. It is a point well taken by island planners and developers, who have built luxury resorts on those beaches. Many of those resorts quickly qualified as prime hotels of the world. Properties like Cap Juluca, CuisinArt, and Malliouhana are routinely ranked on the top of the best lists in Caribbean Travel Life, Conde Nast Traveler, and Travel and Leisure. Besotted visitors have created a market for luxury villa and home sales that have developers madly working to provide choices for them. Covecastles and Altamer were among the first individual-owner villas; their units are sold and are now available for vacation rentals. They have since been joined by other impressive developments, among them the St. Regis Temenos, the Viceroy, and Cerulean, and there are a number of private individual villas dotting the landscape all over the island. These new homes not only add to the available rooms for visitors but also provide a significant boost to the local economy. This is the best guide to Anguilla, excerpted from our extensive guide to all of the Leeward Islands, complete with details on where to stay, where to eat, nightlife, and all activities. ungekürzt. Pulitzer Prize, General nonfiction, 2016 In a thrilling dramatic narrative, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Joby Warrick traces how the strain of militant Islam behind ISIS first arose in a remote Jordanian prison and spread with the unwitting aid of two American presidents. When Jordan granted amnesty to a group of political prisoners in 1999, it little realized that among them was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a terrorist mastermind and soon the architect of an Islamist movement bent on dominating the Middle East. In Black Flags, an unprecedented account of the rise of ISIS, Joby Warrick shows how the zeal of this one man and the strategic mistakes of Presidents Bush and Obama led to the banner of ISIS being raised over huge swaths of Syria and Iraq. Zarqawi began by directing terror attacks from a base in Northern Iraq, but it was the American invasion in 2003 that catapulted him to the head of a vast insurgency. By falsely identifying him as the link between Saddam and bin Laden, US officials spurred like-minded radicals to rally to his cause. Their wave of brutal beheadings and suicide bombings persisted until American and Jordanian intelligence discovered clues that led to a lethal airstrike on Zarqawi's hideout in 2006. His movement, however, endured. First calling themselves al-Qaeda in Iraq then Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, his followers sought refuge in ungoverned pockets on the Iraq-Syria border. When the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, and as the US largely stood by, ISIS seized its chance to pursue Zarqawi's dream of an ultraconservative Islamic caliphate. Drawing on high-level access to CIA and Jordanian sources, Warrick weaves moment-by-moment operational details with the perspectives of diplomats and spies, generals and heads of state, many of whom foresaw a menace worse than al Qaeda and tried desperately to stop it. Black Flags is a definitive history that reveals the l ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sunil Malhotra. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/004335/bk_rand_004335_sample.mp3. Views differ on bitcoin, but few doubt the transformative potential of Blockchain technology. The Truth Machine is the best book so far on what has happened and what may come along. It demands the attention of anyone concerned with our economic future. (Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard, former Treasury Secretary) From Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna, the authors of The Age of Cryptocurrency, comes the definitive audiobook on the Internet’s Next Big Thing: The Blockchain.    Big banks have grown bigger and more entrenched. Privacy exists only until the next hack. Credit card fraud is a fact of life. Many of the “legacy systems” once designed to make our lives easier and our economy more efficient are no longer up to the task. Yet there is a way past all this - a new kind of operating system with the potential to revolutionize vast swaths of our economy: the blockchain.  In The Truth Machine, Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna demystify the blockchain and explain why it can restore personal control over our data, assets, and identities; grant billions of excluded people access to the global economy; and shift the balance of power to revive society’s faith in itself. They reveal the disruption it promises for industries including finance, tech, legal, and shipping. Casey and Vigna expose the challenge of replacing trusted (and not-so-trusted) institutions on which we’ve relied for centuries with a radical model that bypasses them.   The Truth Machine reveals the empowerment possible when self-interested middlemen give way to the transparency of the blockchain, while highlighting the job losses, assertion of special interests, and threat to social cohesion that will accompany this shift. With the same balanced perspective they brought to The Age of Cryptocurrency, Casey and Vigna show why listeners must ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Runnette.
