This book offers the first systematic study of death in the later novels of Don DeLillo. It focusses on Underworld to The Silence along with his 1984 novel White Noise, in which the fear of death dominates the protagonists most hauntingly. The study covers eight novels which mark the development of one of the most philosophical and prestigious novelists writing in English. Death, in its close relation to time, temporality and transience, has been an ongoing subject or motif in Don DeLillo's oeuvre. His later work is shot through with the cultural and socio-psychological symptoms and responses death elicits. His 'reflection on dying' revolves around defensive mechanisms and destruction fantasies, around immortalism and cryonics, covert and overt surrogates, consumerism and media, the mortification of the body. His characters give themselves to mourning, are afflicted with psychosis, depression and the looming of emptiness. Yet writing about death also means facing the ambiguity and failing representability of 'death.' The book considers DeLillo's use of language in which temporality and something like 'death' may become manifest. It deals with the transfiguration of time and death into art, with apocalypse as a central and recurring subject, and, as a kind of antithesis, epiphany. The study eventually proposes some reflections on the meaning of death in an age fully contingent on media and technology and dominated by financial capitalism and consumerism. Despite all the distractions, death remains a sinister presence which has beset the minds not only of DeLillo's protagonists.

Do your kids think that clean, folded clothes magically appear in their drawers? Do they roll their eyes when you suggest they clean the bathroom? Do you think it's your job to pave their road to success? As parents, so often we hover, race in to save, and do everything we can for our kids - unintentionally reinforcing their belief that the world revolves around them. When Kay Wyma realized that an attitude of entitlement had crept into her home, this mother of five got some attitude of her own. Cleaning House is her account of a year-long campaign to introduce her kids to basic life skills. From making beds to grocery shopping to refinishing a deck chair, the Wyma family experienced for themselves the ways meaningful work can transform self-absorption into earned self-confidence and concern for others. With irresistible humor and refreshing insights, Kay candidly details the ups and downs of removing her own kids from the center of the universe. The changes that take place in her household will inspire you to launch your own campaign against youth entitlement. As Kay says, "Here's to seeing what can happen when we tell our kids, 'I believe in you, and I'm going to prove it by putting you to work." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tavia Gilbert. In 1988, before her senior year of high school, Nina and her best friend spend the summer alone on Cape Cod. Nina has grown up with her ailing grandmother - and she yearns for the chance of a deeper connection. When she enrolls in an acting course, she soon finds romance with Sarah, one of the teaching assistants.  Nina's own world revolves around Sarah, while the rest of the world moves urgently on. Nina's high school teacher does not take the end of their relationship well; her best friend feels abandoned; the AIDS epidemic rages; her fellow actors grow and hone their talents. The novel perfectly captures the revelatory feelings that arrive with young adulthood - the startling awareness of oneself outside the bounds of friends and family, and the twin senses of loneliness and liberation that accompany this knowledge. After a summer of love and loss, Nina slowly finds her way back home.  With lyrical prose, nuanced characters, and an evocative narrative voice, Tamsen Wolff vividly brings to life the dizzying experience of first love - and its inevitable partner, first heartbreak. This honest depiction of female relationships - both romantic and platonic - will capture listeners from 15 to 50. Juno's Swans is rich and sharp and emotional in all the right places.   ungekürzt.
