1356 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 716min
Go with God and fight like the Devil. A fascinating hero, the pursuit of a sword of mythical power, and one of England’s greatest and least known battles: the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. This is a remarkable novel by Britain’s master storyteller. Thomas of Hookton, a veteran of Crecy and many other battles, is the leader of a mercenary company of bowmen and men-at-arms who ravage the countryside east of Gascony. Edward, Prince of Wales, later to be known as the Black Prince, is assembling an army to fight the French once more, but before Thomas can join, he must fulfil an urgent task. La Malice, a sword of mythical power guaranteeing victory to its owner, is thought to be concealed somewhere near Poitiers. With signs that a battle between the English and the French is looming, others are seeking the treasure too, and some - French, Scots, and even English - are pursuing their private agendas against Thomas. But all - Thomas of Hookton, his enemies and friends, and the fate of La Malice - become swept up in the extraordinary confrontation that follows, as the large French army faces the heavily outnumbered English in battle. ungekürzt. Frontier at Three Rivers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 465min
Author Sam Hossler makes history come alive! This fast-paced, easy-to-read historical novel replays actual events that took place in the mid 1700s in Western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny and Monogahela rivers converge to form the Ohio. This frontier area was seething with bloody tensions as Native Americans, early pioneers, British and French agents, and trappers were engaged in a hostile battle for the land. Hossler wrote the book after a lifetime interest in the outdoors and years of historical research. He uses dates, battles, locations, and characters from Pennsylvania's past to create a book that literally races along. Frontier at Three Rivers focuses on one small slice of history, in two segments that take place ten years apart. This fictionalized account is historically accurate, describing the bribery, deception, stealing, and political intrigue of the time as well as the atrocities and bloody battles between the warring factions. Listeners will learn about this time in American history while feeling the unshakable pioneer spirit of the early settlers and the fierce pride of the Native Americans upon whose land this story unfolds. Frontier at Three Rivers combines two previously published books: The Summer of 1763 and The Great Land Grab. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ron Babcock. When you can't trust yourself, who can you believe? Everything about Anna's life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There's Nick, solemn and brooding; Cas, lighthearted and playful; Trev, smart and caring; and Sam...who's stolen Anna's heart. Reserved and always controlled, Sam does everything with purpose. When the Branch decides it's time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them. Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to go, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There's just one problem. Sam and the boys don't remember anything before living in the lab - not even their true identities. Now on the run, her father's warning in her head, Anna begins to doubt everything she thought she knew about herself. She soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they're both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Flying Ship , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 19min
There was a family of three brothers. The older two were very intelligent and much beloved by their parents; the youngest however was considered to be a dunce and a pest and was always getting in his mother's way. One day, the king announced that he was offering his daughter's hand in marriage to whoever could build a flying ship. The older two brothers were immediately sent on their way to try to construct the flying ship, while the youngest was left behind. He pestered his mother until she let him go as well, sending him off with simply a crust of bread and some water. He meets a manikin on his journey to the castle, who gives him strange directions that lead him to a flying ship and instructing him to take with him whoever he discovers along the way. The youngest brother travels along, picking up all of the men he meets on his way to the castle. When they arrive at the castle and the king sees the ragtag crew aboard the ship, he immediately decides that he will not let any man so low marry his daughter. And so, he begins to give the youngest son seemingly impossible tasks to complete before he can marry the princess. Lucky for the youngest son he has just the crew of men to help him! Empire: The Novel of Imperial Rome , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1417min
Continuing the epic story begun in his iRoma, Steven Saylor charts the destinies of five more generations of the aristocratic Pinarius family, from the reign of Augustus to height of Rome’s empire. The Pinarii witness the machinations of Tiberius, the madness of Caligula, and the decadence of Nero. The deadly paranoia of Domitian gives way to the Golden Age of Trajan and Hadrian - but even the most enlightened emperors wield the power to destroy their subjects on a whim. Empire is filled with the dramatic, defining moments of the age, including the Great Fire of 64 A.D, Nero’s persecution of the Christians, and the astounding opening games of the Colosseum. But at the novel’s heart are the choices and temptations faced by each generation of the Pinarii. One becomes the plaything of the notorious Messalina. One becomes the lover of a Vestal virgin. One falls under the spell of Nero, while another is drawn to the strange new cult of those who call themselves Christians. While the Pinarii struggle for survival, they also search for meaning. Some cling to the worship of the gods who made Rome great. Others explore the mysteries of astrology, follow the teachings of the wiseman Apollonius of Tyana, or celebrate the beautiful youth elevated by Hadrian to the status of a god. However diverse their destinies, all the Pinarii are united by the mysterious gold talisman called the fascinum handed down from a time before Rome existed. As it passes from generation to generation, the fascinum seems to exercise a power not only over those who wear it, but over the very fate of the empire. ungekürzt. Language: English.
