The premier Russian dramatist before Chekov, Alexander Ostrovsky was one of the first masters of realistic theatre. A typical example of his approach to drama, A Protégée of the Mistress is almost cinematic in its presentation. The action is represented by a series of vivid snapshots, in which Ostrovsky quickly and subtly illustrates the foibles and weaknesses of each character, and shows how they are forced into a hostile dependence on each other. A recurring theme of Ostrovsky's plays is the uneasy balance between social utility and moral rectitude, which is encapsulated in this bitter comedy in the character of Madam Ulanbekov, wealthy landowner and relentless guardian of young wards, whom she forces into marriages of convenience as she sees fit. Cast Madam Ulanbekov - Cate Barratt Leonid - David Prickett Vasalisa Peregrinovna - Michele Eaton Potapych and Negligentov - John Burlinson Nadya - Charlotte Duckett Gavrilovna - Maureen Boutilier Peasant girl and Grisha - Becca Maggie Liza - Leanne Yau Stage directions read by Grace Garrett. ungekürzt. Incompatibility of Temper: Three Pictures of Moscow Life by Alexander Ostrovsky Translated by Ethel Voynich Presented by the Online Stage Alexander Ostrovsky was the premier Russian dramatist before Chekov, and a true master of realistic satire. His Incompatibility of Temper consists of three sections or "Pictures of Moscow life". Despite its patina of humor, the work is a merciless exposé of the commercial middle class dishonesty, and the convenient immorality hiding behind social conventions, which are characteristic of a developing urban society. The most noble character, Serafima, is a compelling mixture of naïveté, whimsicality, sentimentality, and obstinate practicality - one of the finest character portraits in Russian drama. Cast Prezhnez, the First Coachman and a Person Unknown - Marty Kryz Madame Prezhnev - Linda Barrans Paul and the Second Coachman - Tovarisch Oustinya Filimonovna Pereshkivkina and Outlita Nikitishna - Jennifer Fournier Karp Karpych and a Footman - John Burlinson Serafima Karpovna - Lee Ann Howlett Matryona and a maid servant - Anastasia Durning Stage directions read by Denis Daly Language: English. Earth Spirit: A Tragedy in Four Acts by Frank Wedekind  Translated by Samuel A. Eliot Presented by the Online Stage Frank Wedekind (1864-1918) was the most controversial dramatist of his age. Most of his work focuses on the ubiquity and inevitably corrupting influence of sexual attraction. His most famous plays are the two that depict the rise, fall, and eventual gruesome death of the vampish Lulu, who, in Wedekind’s presentation, became a ghastly parody of Goethe’s “Eternal Feminine”. The first of the plays is Earth Spirit, in which Lulu marries and survives three husbands, only to face prosecution for the shooting of the third. Lulu’s later adventures are described in the following play, Pandora’s Box. The two plays were later bundled with Death and the Devil and Castle Wetterstein to form a tetralogy that was published as Tragedies of Sex.  Cast Ringmaster/Rodrigo - Ron Altman Lulu - Charlotte Duckett Countess Geschwitz - Leanne Yau Schigolch - Marty Krz Alva Schön - Brett Downey Dr. Schön - John Burlinson Schwartz - Garrison Moore Prince Escerny and Ferdinand - Joseph Tabler Dr. Goll and Escherich - Alan Weyman Alfred Hugenberg and Henriette - Chyanne Donnell Stage directions read by Denis Daly  Audio edited by Denis Daly ungekürzt. Rosmersholm By Henrik Ibsen Translated by Charles Archer Presented by the Online Stage Rosmersholm is a play surrounding the deep and intense political and cultural change in Norway in the middle of the 1880s, a period during which the traditional ruling class were forced to relinquish their right to impose their ideals on the rest of society. Rosmer's view of life is seriously challenged by his interactions with Rebecca, which lead to a shattering conclusion.
