In constructing the urban as a set of interconnected actions, this book presents a less travelled route to understanding the city. It leads to a fresh perspective on several issues central to urban theory, including the uniqueness of a city alongside practices it shares with other urban places. This book presents an innovative theoretical contribution to the field of urban studies, bridging the gap between western centric scholarship and perspectives from the global South. It offers conceptually rich insights, combining notions of cities as organisms, and references to postcolonial urban studies, with insights around aspirations, capabilities, agency, and social identity. It develops concepts, like the Proximity Principle, that help explain the experience of a city. This conceptualization of the city as a process should interest all who are sensitive to cities, whether they study them in academia or simply develop close associations with specific urban places.

This book describes the operations and industrial processes related to the production of steel. The chapters cover the second part of the iron and steelmaking process, called steelmaking, presenting the stages of the process until obtaining the finished steel product in different formats for distinct applications. This book reports significant operating variables of the processes and basic operations of the steelmaking. The chapters contain numerous solved exercises conceptually supported on the thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals of the production of steel from the pig iron in the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) and the production of steel and ferroalloys in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). The thermal and mechanic fundamentals of the hot rolling operations and the mechanical fundamentals of the cold rolling, forming, and wire drawing to obtain different steel products are also reported. The book summarizes the strengths and uncertainties of steel as a structural material.

The Teachings of Meister Eckhart: An Invitation to Experience God in Every Moment The 13th-century mystic Meister Eckhart was the most brilliant Christian scholar of his day, but he was also legendary for the way he opened listeners to the direct experience of God during his public talks. Today, his written wisdom remains alive as ever, ready to illuminate us. With Meister Eckhart's Living Wisdom, James Finley, one of today's best-known teachers of the Christian contemplative tradition, invites us into Eckhart's insights in the same way this luminary teacher delighted in sharing them - through the spoken word. "The eye with which I see God is the eye with which God sees me." If the Divine dwells in all things, including ourselves, then why do we experience His presence only in fleeting moments, if at all? How do we let go of the illusions that imprison us to discover direct and felt liberation - not conceptually or in the afterlife but right here and now? These were the questions that compelled Meister Eckhart to reflection, spiritual practice, and discovery. In this in-depth learning program, James Finley guides us through teachings and meditations for bringing Meister Eckhart's wisdom into our daily lives - to find for ourselves "the indestructible joy that that transcends even death", and to experience God not as a separate being but as the loving eternal center that sustains and embraces each of us and all of creation. Our human capacity for responsible agency infuses our lived experience yet seems impossible to situate fully within a materialistic scientific worldview. This book indicates how we can reconcile scientific and personal perspectives without eroding the integrity of either. The structural solution both amends foundational assumptions for understanding scientific activity, meaning and reality, and also recognizes our own participation in constituting each of these domains. The book reanalyzes the requirements for scientific objectivity, and then reconstructs and aligns both an external/causal and an internal/subjective account of our potential for genuine mental causation and responsibility. An Appendix presents original experimental data from the author s journey. This book is intended for anyone who has struggled with the tensions between scientific and humanistic conceptions of ourselves; for anyone interested in a conceptually unified solution to diverse problems in philosophy of science, mind and meaning; and for scientists wanting to take authentic responsibility for their science.

The Anthropocene and the Undead describes how our experience of an increasingly erratic environment and the idea of the undead are more closely linked than the obvious zombie horde signaling the end of the world. In fact, as described here, much of how we understand the anthropocene both conceptually and in practice involves undead entities from the past that will not die, undead traumas that rise up and consume the world, and undead temporalities that can never end. fifteen original essays by cultural and anthropological experts such as Kyle William Bishop, Nils Bubandt, Johan Höglund, and Steffen Hantke, among others, study the nature of humanity's ongoing complicated relationship to the environment via the concept of the undead. In doing so, The Anthropocene and the Undead sheds invaluable light on adjacent concepts such as the Capitalocene, Necrocene, Disanthropocene, Post-anthropocene, and the Symbiocene to trace real and imagined trajectories of our more-than-human selves into undead and undying futures.

A Step-By-Step Course in Embodied Spiritual Awakening It is possible to live more deeply, more intimately in touch with yourself and with the world around you. It is possible to experience your interconnection with everything, even as you express your own utter uniqueness. All it takes is a subtle inner attunement to your own body and mind. With The Realization Process, Dr. Judith Blackstone shares for the first time a complete audio training course in her original method for embodied spiritual awakening, through a series of transformational exercises taught here step by step. Attunement to "Fundamental Consciousness" At the heart of this work is what Dr. Blackstone calls fundamental consciousness - a primary dimension of being that is the basis of both our individual sense of self and the transcendence of our separateness. This is not something we can grasp conceptually; we need to touch it directly. "As fundamental consciousness, we pervade both the subject and the object of experience," she explains. "We move from imagination to actuality—to truly see, truly touch, truly hear." For the past 25 years in her psychotherapy practice, Dr. Blackstone has developed meditative practices for attuning to fundamental consciousness in oneself and in others. On The Realization Process, she guides you through beginner and advanced versions of these practices, including the core breath technique for accessing the body's central energetic pathway; seeing, hearing, and moving with fundamental consciousness; attuning to the three qualities of fundamental consciousness (awareness, emotion, and physical sensation); and relational exercises for healing and growth in intimate partnerships. If you’re seeking new ways to communicate with your partner and strengthen the bonds that brought you together, SMART Love's methodology offers a welcome and effective alternative.A relationship guide with concrete examples, SMART Love lays out an interactive and empowering method to foster communication and ultimately help save your marriage from divorce. Drawing on a year-long case study of a troubled relationship, Vincent Fudge II discusses the importance of concepts, such as emphasizing communication techniques, measuring progress, and practicing relational accountability and alignment of goals. Learning how to be a better partner takes commitment and understanding. With this book, you will have the tools needed to improve your chances of success and lifelong love."SMART Love, a quasi-fictional educational narrative, that focuses on relational improvement by establishing healthy behaviors in a relationship emphasizing effective communication techniques, measuring progress, relational accountability, and alignment on relationship goals. With chapters existing as month-long reviews, each month/chapter is transitioned into with a flashback memory of a significant event that provides context as to how they wound up where "Edward" and his wife were at the beginning of the one-year journey. Key instances of communications successes, capitalized by positive outcomes from the SMART Love exercises, inspire Edward to continue working on making his marriage work. Conceptually, SMART Love is meant to do two things: 1. tell a story about a man’s commitment to work on fixing his relationship and describe very vividly what that experience looked like, and 2. share realistic relationship improvement concepts and d ungekürzt. Anger is not just ubiquitous; it is also popular. Many people think it is impossible to care sufficiently for justice without anger at injustice. Many believe that it is impossible for individuals to vindicate their own self-respect or to move beyond injuries without anger. To not feel anger in those cases would be considered suspect. Is this how we should think about anger, or is anger above all a disease, deforming both the personal and the political? In this wide-ranging book, Martha C. Nussbaum, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that anger is conceptually confused and normatively pernicious. It assumes that the suffering of the wrongdoer restores the thing that was damaged, and it betrays an all-too-lively interest in relative status and humiliation. Studying anger in intimate relationships, casual daily interactions, the workplace, the criminal justice system, and movements for social transformation, Nussbaum shows that anger's core ideas are both infantile and harmful. Is forgiveness the best way of transcending anger? Nussbaum examines different conceptions of this much-sentimentalized notion in both the Jewish and Christian traditions and in secular morality. Some forms of forgiveness are ethically promising, she claims, but others are subtle allies of retribution: those that exact a performance of contrition and abasement as a condition of waiving angry feelings. In general, she argues, a spirit of generosity (combined, in some cases, with a reliance on impartial welfare-oriented legal institutions) is the best way to respond to injury. Applied to the personal and the political realms, Nussbaum's profoundly insightful and erudite view of anger and forgiveness puts both in a startling new light. ungekürzt. Language: English. The first comprehensive treatment of active inference, an integrative perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior used across multiple disciplines. Active inference is a way of understanding sentient behavior-a theory that characterizes perception, planning, and action in terms of probabilistic inference. Developed by theoretical neuroscientist Karl Friston over years of groundbreaking research, active inference provides an integrated perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior that is increasingly used across multiple disciplines including neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy. Active inference puts the action into perception. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of active inference, covering theory, applications, and cognitive domains. Active inference is a "first principles" approach to understanding behavior and the brain, framed in terms of a single imperative to minimize free energy. The book emphasizes the implications of the free energy principle for understanding how the brain works. It first introduces active inference both conceptually and formally, contextualizing it within current theories of cognition. It then provides specific examples of computational models that use active inference to explain such cognitive phenomena as perception, attention, memory, and planning.
