Art Criticism and Modernism in the United States (eBook, PDF)
This study is an analysis of 'high' and 'late' modernist criticism in New York during the 1960s and early 1970s. Through a close reading of a selection of key critics of the period-which will expand the remit beyond the canonical texts-the book examines the ways that modernist criticism's discourse remains of especial disciplinary interest. Despite its alleged narrowness and exclusion, the debates of the 1960s raised fundamental questions concerning the nature of art writing. Those include arguments around the nature of value and judgement; the relationship between art criticism and art history; and the related problem of what we mean by the 'contemporary.' Stephen Moonie argues that within those often-fractious debates, there exists a shared discourse. And further, contrary to the current consensus that modernists were elitist, dogmatic, and irrelevant to contemporary debates on art, the study shows that there is much that we can learn from reconsidering their writings. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, modern art, art criticism, and literary studies.- Shop: buecher

Gasoline , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 43min
Gregory Corso exploded onto the Beat scene in the mid-1950s when the names Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs were changing the course of American literature.Corso added a street appeal to Beat poetry that may have been lacking in the works of others who had more elitist backgrounds. Corso had been a real live juvenile delinquent, in and out of reform schools and written off by society as a wayward youth. But while in prison he learned to read - and he read deeply and began to produce his own poetry, showing a rare perception and facility with words.Gasoline was Corso's first major work, originally published in 1958 by City Lights Books, the essential publisher for the Beat Generation. Corso carved a place for himself among the Beats, achieving a fame in poetry arguably second only to Allen Ginsberg. In Gasoline lsteners will see the emergence of a major new poet, a talent with an unbridled lust for life and a desire to put his unique stamp on all that he saw in the world around him. ungekürzt. Zolabarth Bi , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 90min
Maximillien controls Zolabarth, a shape-shifting alien powerful enough to destroy all his enemies, and capable of assuming a beguiling form that satisfies all his other needs. Megalomaniac Maximus always achieves his goals. Right now, his goal is to destroy a massive army that tried to draft him using a mind control device. The only way Maximus can accomplish this is with a Rig-mertian: an alien that can transform into an invincible monster. Zolabarth is the Rig-mertian lent out to Maximus. Since Zolabarth is so destructive, his master cursed him with a weaker form. Every time Zolabarth takes his monster form, he has to become a female afterward. Maximus is too elitist to relate to the crass Rig-mertian at first, but after some strange intimate moments, he finds himself drawn to him. When he's suddenly presented with Zolabarth as a female, there's no question in his mind how things will proceed. Zolabarth killed his last master for putting the moves on him. Animal Farm
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. George Orwell's fable of revolutionary farm animals - the steadfast horses Boxer and Clover, the opportunistic pigs Snowball and Napoleon, and the deafening choir of sheep - who overthrow their elitist human master only to find themselves subject to a new authority, is one of the most famous warnings ever written. Rejected by such eminent publishing figures as Victor Gollancz, Jonathan Cape and T.S. Eliot due to its daringly open criticism of Stalin, Animal Farm was published to great acclaim by Martin Secker and Warburg on 17 August 1945. One reviewer wrote 'In a hundred years' time perhaps Animal Farm ... may simply be a fairy story: today it is a fairy story with a good deal of point.' Seventy-five years since its first publication, Orwell's immortal satire remains an unparalleled masterpiece and more relevant than ever. The Authoritative Text. With an introduction by Christopher Hitchens. *The jacket of this stunning hardback edition features period artwork by Elizabeth Friedlander, one of Europe's pre-eminent 20th-century graphic designers. Look out for complementary editions of Orwell's essential works Nineteen Eighty-Four and Down and Out in Paris and London.*- Shop: buecher

Crisis of Responsibility: Our Cultural Addiction to Blame and How You Can Cure It , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 299min
The left and right have gone to great lengths to blame the problems plaguing our society but neither Washington DC, Wall Street, Mexico, China, the Feds, nor the media are the cause of our problems - nor are they the cure. Across the globe a “revolt” of sorts is taking place against elitism. No more will big government, big media, big banks, big bureaucracy, and big institutions hold the secret nuggets of truth and dictate our lives and fortunes. Financial markets, political punditry, and cultural leaders are all scrambling to react to the rise of the often disenfranchised. But what happens after all the bogeymen have been vanquished? What if opposing the incompetence of the European Union, the biases of the American media, the corruption of crony capitalism, the arrogance of political power brokers, and allegedly unfair global trade deals is not enough? The key to American prosperity in this new era of populism is for moral people to make responsibility matter again by renewing personal virtue and form lasting, mediating institutions that will trump the elitist bogeymen and scapegoats for generations to come. If we fail as individual Americans to address this core crisis of responsibility, we have only ourselves to blame for what happens next. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David L. Bahnsen.
