Unity in Diversity , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 179min
In any social arrangement, especially in a nation as large and diverse as the United States, the many differences among people are all too obvious. We have different capacities and resources, and we live with vastly different circumstances and outcomes. Within such splendid diversity, where shall we find a basis for unity? And what can equality possibly mean? Racism has a long and well-known history in the United States, and there have been many struggles to overcome its legacy. Yet many of the attempts to eliminate racism have been coercive, producing a powerful conflict between equality and liberty. Ethnocentrism, judging others as inferior because of their culture, race, or religious background, presents many of the same kinds of problems as racism. A nation of immigrants, such as the U.S., is particularly challenged to accommodate a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, while seeking some common foundation for a sense of unity. Sexism, the view that a person's sex overwhelmingly determines his or her social status, joins racism and ethnocentrism as prototypes for many of our most serious moral problems. Among the more recent problems associated with diversity are affirmative action and multiculturalism. These are not only political issues; they also are philosophical disputes that touch our understanding of ourselves as a nation. The United States is simultaneously committed to liberty, justice, and equality. But there is a clear and profound trade-off between liberty and equality. What is the proper balance between these conflicting ideals? And what processes and institutions help us manage the trade-off? Our task is to find unity in diversity, e pluribus unum, a motto that means "out of many, one". ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cliff Robertson, Robert Guillaume. Why We Fight: Practices for Lasting Peace , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 194min
War is the most ancient and primitive way of dealing with conflict. According to yoga, stopping the cycle of war requires delving into the subtle causes underlying material desires and religious differences. These are selfishness, ego, greed, ethnocentrism, and sense of inferiority. Because of these attributes, we fail to do what we know is right, and persist in doing what we know is wrong. In the scriptures, this phenomenon is called killing the conscience. The great scriptures of yoga - the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutra, and the Upanishads - clearly describe how the subtle causes of external war emanate from the internal world. The real cause of war lies rooted in the individual's unwillingness to listen to the voice of the heart, the inner conscience. Drawing on the philosophy of yoga and other spiritual systems, Why We Fight: Practices for Lasting Peace offers practical tools for self-transformation. Through contemplation and spiritual practice, we can replace greed, desire, jealousy, and anger with compassion, tolerance, and love for ourselves and others. By cultivating these qualities in our daily lives, we have the power to make a positive impact on the world. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Abella. Intercultural Management: Concepts, Practice, Critical Reflection
This textbook explores the reasons for intercultural differences and their effects on the behavior of individuals and organizations within the context of management. The text embraces the presence of ambiguity and complexity and encourages critical thinking when it comes to intercultural relations in order to avoid ethnocentrism, stereotyping and prejudice, as well as overly simplistic solutions.Integrating findings from management, but also the humanities and social sciences, as well as politics and popular culture, intercultural management is understood as a phenomenon that transcends disciplinary boundaries and includes questions around identity constructions, power relations, and ethics. This makes intercultural management a fascinating and rewarding subject to study. Throughout, the author encourages an analytical approach to intercultural management built upon strong methodological foundations, and draws on examples from a wide range of different contexts and cultures to help reflectively translate research and concepts into practice in a way that is lively and engaging. This textbook is essential reading for students taking university courses related to intercultural management. Lecturers can visit the companion website to access a Teaching Guide and PowerPoint slides that can be adapted and edited to suit teaching needs. Why Would I Be Married Here? (eBook, ePUB)
Why Would I Be Married Here? examines marriage migration undertaken by rural bachelors in North India, unable to marry locally, who travel across the breadth of India seeking brides who do not share the same caste, ethnicity, language, or customs as themselves. Combining rich ethnographic evidence with Dalit feminist and political economy frameworks, Reena Kukreja connects the macro-political violent process of neoliberalism to the micro-personal level of marriage and intimate gender relations to analyze the lived reality of this set of migrant brides in cross-region marriages among dominant-peasant caste Hindus and Meo Muslims in rural North India. Why Would I Be Married Here? reveals how predatory capitalism links with patriarchy to dispossess many poor women from India's marginalized Dalit and Muslim communities of marriage choices in their local communities. It reveals how, within the context of the increasing spread of capitalist relations, these women's pragmatic cross-region migration for marriage needs to be reframed as an exercise of their agency that simultaneously exposes them to new forms of gender subordination and internal othering of caste discrimination and ethnocentrism in conjugal communities. Why Would I Be Married Here? offers powerful examples of how contemporary forces of neoliberalism reshape the structural oppressions compelling poor women from marginalized communities worldwide into making compromised choices about their bodies, their labor, and their lives.- Shop: buecher
