Operation Reunion: Daring POW Rescue from Romania , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 48min
In the middle of August 1944, the Soviet Red Army crossed the eastern border of Romania and threatened the entire position of the Axis in the Balkans. On August 23, Romania's King Michael summoned the head of the government to the royal palace and asked him to break with the Germans and negotiate surrender terms with the Soviet Union. Shortly thereafter, Michael took Romania out of the war and issued an ultimatum that the German forces leave the country within three days. The German commander responded immediately by bombing the royal palace, government offices, and other targets in Bucharest. Amid this military and political chaos, the guards at the prisoner-of-war camps abandoned their posts, and the question of what was the best course for the Allied prisoners was discussed at great length by the prisoners themselves. Hanging in the balance were the lives of more than 1200 Allied airmen who had crashed or bailed out over Romania and were now trapped in the midst of a war hundreds of miles from friendly territory. Dire action was needed to settle the dire situation. The senior American airman came up with a plan to be flown to Italy aboard a Romanian Air Force airplane, and his arrival there triggered one of history's great and novel mass evacuations. The late American fighter ace Robert J. Goebel wrote the definitive account of Operation Reunion, and it is proudly presented here. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Goebel. In Every Clime and Place , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 444min
Semper Fidelis. Always Faithful. The motto of the United States Marine Corps.Words to live by.On the ragged edges of civilization, Corporal Michael Collins has lived those words, taking on riots and evacuations, rebels and terrorists. Asteroid belt patrol is just another deployment. Ninety-nine percent boredom, one percent terror. But soon the platoon of Marines find themselves entangled in the threads of a conspiracy of corporate greed, government corruption, piracy, and a band of war criminals. As the fire team leader struggles with tensions in the close-knit unit, Collins and his fellow Marines find themselves outnumbered in a pitched battle to stop a corrupt land grab that seems right out of the Old West, but on a new, wider, more unforgiving frontier. And now he must confront the harsh demands of being “always faithful”.Semper Fi. Words to live by.Words to die by.Time to earn that combat pay, Marines. Welcome to the Suck. And remember, you volunteered for this.Patrick LeClerc has crafted a tense military-action adventure on the edge of civilization: Earth’s mining colonies in the asteroid belt. In Every Clime and Place combines the spirit of classic s/f of Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, or David Drake’s Hammer’s Slammers with the isolated, small unit grunt’s-eye view intimacy of George MacDonald Fraser’s Quartered Safe Out Here.In Every Clime and Place is a frontier land grab; a tale of government corruption and corporate piracy, and a near-future Marine science-fiction story, told with gritty authenticity, gallows humor, and raw emotion, evoking the closeness and isolation of a small unit deployed to the distant edge of a bleak and dangerous frontier. ungekürzt. Nia's Return: A Nia Freeman Novel, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 606min
A year after a devastating experience in Haiti, Nia Freeman has decided to leave Washington, D.C., with the resolve to live life on her own terms and to prepare for the peak oil crisis. She needs to get away from nightmares of earthquakes, evacuations, clogged streets, rowdy mobs, and crumbling buildings. Nia quits her job and crushes her grandfather's hope that she would join the family business. She moves into her childhood home in Augusta, Georgia, with plans of finding her true self and preparing for a future without oil. She hires her buddy, John Coles, to help renovate the ancestral home so that her grandfather would let her have it. She sets about stockpiling emergency supplies and making the house safe. But her plans take a detour when the attractive Thandi Kapencher, an African history professor, asks for Nia's help to find her brother, Karabo, a young footloose, social activist. Karabo volunteers at a local group called Freegans for the People that Thandi fears is involved in criminal activities. The group considers themselves to be modern-day Robin Hoods, and they'll stop at nothing to maintain their cover. Thandi feels Nia's background might give her credibility with local charity groups to find out about her brother's whereabouts. Thandi offers a sizeable payment for her time. Nia needs the money for the renovation so she visits the back streets of Augusta getting to know the homeless and Karabo's dubious coworkers. She tries to enlist the help of Karabo's pregnant ex-girlfriend, Lana Harrison, but the young woman is murdered soon after. Nia realizes that she is caught up in a situation more dangerous than she had anticipated. Her feelings for Thandi and her need to do right propel her to find Karabo, locate Lana Harrison's murderer, and find a sustainable way of life without oil. ungekürzt. Language: English. They are reunited in the postapocalyptic remains of Indiana and it's clear that the sparks are still there. By sharing his research, advice, and a healthy dose of common sense, he'll help you rest easy knowing you have a plan for the worst-even if the worst never comes.
