Seit mehr als 20 Jahren veröffentlicht der Multiinstrumentalist aus den Niederlanden unter dem Projektnamen Ayreon höchst aufwändig produzierte Konzeptalben mit verzwackten Storylines, auf denen er - für gewöhnlich von namhaften Gästen begleitet - gewaltige Kathedralen aus Klang errichtet. 2017 erschien sein SciFi-Epos "The Source", es geriet zum bisher größten Ayreon Erfolg. Lucassen liebt derlei Megaprojekte über alles - wenn er sie plant und realisiert, lässt er sich von nichts und niemandem bange machen. Nur eines ruft bei dem über zwei Meter messenden, 56-jährigen Hünen seit jeher unweigerlich Fracksausen hervor: Liveauftritte vor großem Publikum. Sie machen ihn nervös, deshalb meidet er sie gerne. Sein Lampenfieber sei übermächtig, sagt Lucassen selbst, und die daraus resultierenden Panikattacken vor Konzerten wären schwer zu bändigen. Kaum zu glauben, aber wahr. Als Sängerinnen und Sänger waren mit von der Partie: Floor Jansen und Marco Hietala (Nightwish), Damian Wilson (Threshold), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gentle Storm), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Mike Mills (Toehider), Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion), Irene Jansen und Jay van Feggelen (Ayreon), Robert Soeterboek (Star One), John Jaycee Cuijpers (Praying Mantis), Edward Reekers (Kayak), Maggy Luyten (Nightmare) und Lisette van den Berg (Scarlet Stories).
