Who was Essad Bey? Berliner Revue am 2. Dezember im Mainzer Frankfurter HofUm 1930 war Essad Bey nicht nur eine vielbeachtete Person des öffentlichen Lebens in Deutschland, und auch im übrigen Europa, sondern galt u.a. mit seiner Mohammed Biographie (1932) und einigen weiteren Büchern zum Kaukasus, zur russischen Emigration und zum Orient als einer der wichtigsten Publizisten, was die Kulturen und gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche im Nahen und Mittleren Osten angeht. 1905 in Kiew als Lev Nussimbaum geboren, floh vor den Folgen der Oktoberrevolution mit dem Vater aus seiner Heimatstadt Baku über Istanbul nach Berlin, wo er 1922 zum Islam übertrat und den Namen Essad Bey annahm, mit dem er dann auch bekannt wurde. Vielleicht verfasste er unter dem Namen Kurban Said auch den bekanntesten Roman Asserbaidschans, die Liebesgeschichte ?Ali und Nino? (1937), die inzwischen in vielen Sprachen vorliegt und immer noch gelesen wird. Nachdem der Antisemitismus es ihm in Deutschland unmöglich gemacht hatte, weiter zu arbeiten, floh er über Österreich nach Italien, wo er 1942 in Positano verarmt und seitdem weitgehend vergessen starb. Stationen aus Essad Beys Leben und die Spekulationen, die sich mit seinen Wanderungen zwischen Orient und Okzident, Judentum und Islam verbinden, bilden den Stoff und die Motive für eine Revue, die das Berliner Trio ?The Disorientalists?, dessen Musiker aus der Ukraine, den USA und Moldawien kommen, 2015 am Gorki-Theater vorgestellt hat. Nun kommt diese Revue nach Mainz und wird am 24.04.2022 um 20:00 Uhr im Rahmen des Programms ?Unerzählte Geschichten. Jüdisch-muslimische Wechselbeziehungen? im Frankfurter Hof gezeigt. Mit diesem Programm und anderen Veranstaltungen beteiligt sich das Ingelheimer Jüdisch-muslimische Bildungswerk Maimonides (maimondes.eu) am ?Festjahr 2021: 1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland?, gefördert durch Bundesministerium des Inneren, für Bau und Heimat.
