About Railroad Raiders: The focus of this selection concerns both the Federal and Confederate efforts to disable or maintain the railroads within the active theaters of the war. Real railroads of iron and steam and ribbons of steel vanishing into the horizon quickly became a strategic objective of both armies in the Civil War. Raiders and protectors were deployed both North and South. The damage inflicted on roadways and rolling stock was not always easy to accomplish. The simplest method of slowing a train was to remove a small section of rail, but once spotted the gap was not difficult to repair. Both sides learned to tear up long sections of track, pile up and set fire to the ties, and heat and bend the iron. This was temporarily effective, but the rails could often be reheated, straightened out, and spiked back into place. The destruction of bridges, trestles, rolling stock, and especially engines was more difficult and expensive to undo. It was found that to permanently disable a locomotive, however, smashing cylinder heads, pumps, links, and valve stems was not enough. The parts had to be scattered, taken away, or buried or thrown into an inaccessible body of water. It is the author's purpose to record this often under-reported aspect of the Civil War for both military and railroading enthusiasts. Most Civil War historians concentrate on the strategic and military aspects of the railroading industry, and they rather uncritically mention engineering and other technical factors as if they were simply founded or well established. They were not. In many cases, the same sources and traditions are always quoted with no investigation into their accuracy, and no further understanding of the matter at hand is attempted. The Confederate Railroads, for instance, have only been given a detailed examination once. The Railroads of the Confederacy, by Robert Black (1952), was written 60 years ago. ungekürzt. Growing up in the bustling railroad town of Norfolk, Virginia, and joining his conductor grandfather on overnight runs, future Fortune journalist Rush Loving was enchanted with railroads at an early age. In this extraordinary inside look at eight decades of the railroad industry and some of its greatest leaders, Loving reminisces about his colorful people, and fascinating anecdotes. Chatting with brakemen, engineers, and executives, Loving shares stories he collected in locomotive cabs, business cars, executive suites, and even the White House. They paint a compelling, intimate portrait of the railroad industry and its leaders, both inept and visionary. Above all, Loving tells stories of the dedicated men and women who truly love trains, and know the industry from the rails up. The audiobook is published by Indiana University Press. "A rail fan's dream book... Highly recommended." (Choice). "Should be on the bookshelf of anyone who loves railroading as much as its author." (The Baltimore Sun). "Only a journalist of Loving's stature could pull off this tour de force so well." (Fred W. Frailey, author of Twilight of the Great Trains). ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Ferrand. On Thursday, December 15, 1994, Joann Katrinak and her three-month-old son, Alex, went missing from their Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, home. Four months later, when their bodies were found in a lonely patch of woods, the police would launch a three-year investigation leading to the arrest of Patricia Lynne Rorrer - a young mother who had never met either victim - as the monster responsible. In what would become Pennsylvania's first use of mitochondrial DNA in a criminal case, Patricia Rorrer was quickly tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. But did the jury make the right decision? Is Patricia Rorrer truly guilty? As new evidence continues to surface, including allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and evidence tampering, that question requires an answer even more. With a subject matter and storytelling style reminiscent of the hit podcast Serial, Convenient Suspect will appeal to a wide audience. The audiobook reveals information never before made public - information gathered directly from more than 10,000 official documents, including Pennsylvania State Police reports, FBI files, forensic lab results, and the 6,500-page trial transcript. Through four years of intensive research, countless interviews with those involved, and hundreds of letters, phone calls, and personal visits with Patricia Rorrer, the truth about the evidence used to convict her can finally be revealed. ungekürzt. In a small, blue-collar railroad town, two conductors, Jackie McKeon and Sheri Daniels, find themselves on the ride of their lives after finding money hidden on their train. With the mob on their heels and the FBI close behind, how far they will go to save their lives all unfolds on a stretch of rail in upstate New York known as the Hudson Run. Sensible, hardworking Jackie McKeon has had a hell of a week. One night she comes home to find the house she'd painstakingly restored after her parents' fiery deaths is being foreclosed for no apparent reason. Next day her enthusiastic but disorganized assistant conductor, Sheri Daniels, finds someone's lumpy, very important package under the mattress in a sleeping car. Yet she keeps quiet about it till everything's spiraled out of control. But that's what best friends are for, right? Because suddenly Jackie's mortgage has been paid. Two Mafia guys are menacing her about some money. Mark and Alan, the sexy-but-evasive guys they had drinks with last night, turn out to be more than what they had appeared - and they think Jackie's a thief. By evening, as she and Sheri get ready to board the last train, they learn there's a hit out on their lives...and the killers will be riding along. In the next few hours, the conductors see all their railroading skills, their wits, and their friendship tested. By dawn their once predictable lives have been derailed. ungekürzt. Language: English.
