Florence Foster Jenkins: The Inspiring True Story of the World's Worst Singer , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 514min
People may say that I couldn't sing. But no one can say that I didn't sing. Despite lacking pitch, rhythm, or tone, Florence Foster Jenkins became one of America's best-known sopranos, celebrated for her unique recordings and her sell-out concert at Carnegie Hall. Born in 1868 to wealthy Pennsylvanian parents, Florence was a talented young pianist, but her life was thrown into turmoil when she eloped with Frank Jenkins, a man twice her age. The marriage proved a disaster, and, in order to survive, Florence was forced to abandon her dreams of a musical career and teach the piano. Then her father died in 1909, and, newly installed in New York, she used a considerable inheritance to fund her passion. She set up a prestigious amateur music club and began staging operas. Aided by her English common-law husband, St Clair Bayfield, she worked tirelessly to support the city's musical life. Many young singers owed their start to Florence, but she, too, yearned to perform and began giving regular recitals that quickly attracted a cult following. And yet nothing could prepare the world for the astonishing climax of her career when, at the age of 76, she performed at the most hallowed concert hall in America. In Florence Foster Jenkins, Nicholas Martin and Jasper Rees tell her extraordinary story, which inspired the film starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, directed by Stephen Frears. ungekürzt. The King's Daughter tells the enchanting story of Sophia's passion for the flute. The instrument was a gift from her aunt, and the shimmering silver enchanted her from the moment she opened the case. Sophia quickly learned to play, and her music grew more beautiful with each passing day. One afternoon her father, the king, marched into her room and said, ''It is not proper for a princess to be making music. I no longer wish to hear your flute in my castle.'' Heartbroken, Sophia began practicing under the shade of a linden tree, and the wind carried her songs to faraway places. The poetic story is brought to life by the beautiful narration of opera star Jennifer Larmore and the elegant flute artistry of Natalie Schwaabe. EGON PETRI, Musician to the World (eBook, PDF)
Egon Petri, one of the most admired musicians of his generation, brought the sensibilities of the nineteeth century to his students in the mid-twentieth century. In his youth, his parents' home hosted the likes of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Clara Schumann, and he studied with Ferruccio Busoni and other great musicians of the prewar and interwar periods. As a prolific and magisterial pianist, he performed prodigious programs throughout Europe and Russia, both solo recitals and concerts with the great orchestral conductors of the time, before settling in Oakland, California in the United States. With ongoing interest in Petri's life, artistry, and teaching intensified by a re-release of his 1929–1951 recordings, Alfred Kanwischer returned to transcripts of interviews he had conducted with Petri in the period 1960–1962 to create this engaging narrative, replete with treasured memories and extensive direct quotations revealing Petri's charm, humor, and wisdom.

The narrative is divided into chapters focusing on Petri's youth, influences, performance artistry, and teaching, with engaging interludes on conductors and "dream pianos." Fans of classical music will find the world revealed in this book fascinating, while pianists and piano teachers will find it useful and inspiring.

A facsmile of a booklet detailing Petri's concert repertoire during the period 1892–1929 is also included.- Shop: buecher

Symposium, Hörbuch, Digital, 142min
The Symposium (Ancient Greek: Συμπόσιον, Sympósion [sympósi̯on]) is a philosophical text by Plato dated c. 385-370 BC. It depicts a friendly contest of extemporaneous speeches given by a group of notable men attending a banquet. The men include the philosopher Socrates, the general and political figure Alcibiades, and the comic playwright Aristophanes. The speeches are to be given in praise of Eros, the god of love and desire. In the Symposium, Eros is recognized both as erotic love and as a phenomenon capable of inspiring courage, valor, great deeds and works, and vanquishing man's natural fear of death. It is seen as transcending its earthly origins and attaining spiritual heights. This extraordinary elevation of the concept of love raises a question of whether some of the most extreme extents of meaning might be intended as humor or farce. Eros is almost always translated as "love", and the English word has its own varieties and ambiguities that provide additional challenges to the effort to understand the Eros of ancient Athens. The event depicted in the Symposium is a banquet attended by a group of men, who have come to the symposium, which was, in ancient Greece, a traditional part of the same banquet that took place after the meal, when drinking for pleasure was accompanied by music, dancing, recitals, or conversation. The setting means that the participants will be drinking wine, meaning that the men might be induced to say things they wouldn't say elsewhere or when sober. They might speak more frankly, or take more risks, or else be prone to hubris-they might even be inspired to make speeches that are particularly heartfelt and noble. The host has challenged the men to deliver, each, in turn, an encomium—a speech in praise of Love (Eros). Though other participants comply with this challenge, Socrates notably refuses to participate in such an act of praise and instead takes a very different approach to the topic. Keri 4: The Original Child Abuse True Story: Keri Karin, Part Two , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 908min
Child Abuse True Stories presents: Volume four of Kat Ward's sensational autobiography! The year was 1975, and at age 16, young Keri was desperate to strike out on her own. However, as listeners of the first three volumes of this series will know, her childhood was hardly the loving, supportive, preparatory period it should have been.Instead of family dinners and piano recitals, there were shattered dishes and abusive parents. Instead of trips to the museum, there were trips to TV studios - to be molested by celebrities. In short, her childhood was nothing short of a nightmare.Should it really be any surprise then, after such a traumatic baptism into life, that her first foray into the adult world was hardly an unmitigated success? From living in squalor to racking up debts, her new-found independence forced her face-to-face with many of life's grim realities. And despite waiting all her life for her freedom, she soon realised that a world without the institutional bars she was so accustomed to was just too much of a jungle. And every jungle has its predators...But what was a girl to do? Regress back to an abusive enslavement? Or continue moving forward in a world that seemed so backward? She needed a friend - and fast.Naturally, her understandable distrust of others didn't make things easy. Not to mention her warped idea of love. In the end though, her determination proved the deciding factor. As far as she was concerned, she'd performed her final "favour", and cried the last of her tears. But just when she thought she'd finally left her demons behind, she found herself at the mercy of unsavoury characters yet again - and this time, without anyone to turn to...Disclaimer: This is a true story of child abuse. My First Mission: Zion's Camp Books LDS Classics , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 140min
The Faith-Promoting Series began in 1879 with the publication of this book, My First Mission. At that time George Q. Cannon, who was a member of the First Presidency, desired to produce a series of books that would both teach faith and other important gospel principles as well as be entertaining enough that youth would be willing to read them. The results were some of the most important and widest read books in the early-LDS cannon. The series totals 17 volumes. This audiobook describes some of the experiences that President Cannon had as a missionary in the Hawaiian islands 1850 to 1853. He states: "When a youth, it was my good fortune to live in the family of President John Taylor. It was my chief delight in those days to listen to him and other Elders relate their experiences as missionaries. Such conversations were very fascinating to me. They made a deep impression upon me. The days of which they spoke were days of poverty when Elders traveled without purse or scrip among strange people who were ignorant of the principles, and too many of them were ready to mob and persecute. They traveled by faith, and were pioneers for the Lord in strange lands, and He was their only reliance. Their missions were rich in instances of His power in their behalf. What I heard strengthened my faith and increased the desire in my heart to be a missionary. No calling was so noble in my eyes as that of a standard-bearer of the gospel. "The thought which prompts me to publish My First Mission is that perhaps it may have the effect upon some of the youth of Zion that the recitals of faithful Elders had upon me." It is a powerful account of a faithful missionary, as pertinent today as it was in 1879, especially with the explosion of elders and sisters entering the mission field following Thomas S. Monson's landmark announcement of the adjustment of missionary ages in 2012. This audiobook edition has been specially formatted for your ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Adam Tervort.
