Through an Unlocked Door: In Walks Murder , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 431min
We never lock our doors. This is an often-heard remark expressing a commonplace American attitude or belief that, despite whatever danger might prevail in public spaces, life inside our own homes remains (or, at least, should remain) safe, carefree, normal. This audiobook covers 13 high-profile cases in which evil paid an untimely visit and found the entrance open - when everything was normal, until it wasn't. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Murder at the Vicarage , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 439min
Anyone who murdered Colonel Protheroe," declared the parson, brandishing a carving knife above a joint of roast beef, "would be doing the world at large a service!" It was a careless remark for a man of the cloth. And one which was to come back and haunt the clergyman just a few hours later. From seven potential murderers, Miss Marple must seek out the suspect who has both motive and opportunity. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Joan Hickson. Appointment with Death: A Hercule Poirot Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 357min
Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sits the corpse of Mrs.Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist is the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he'd overheard back in Jerusalem: "You see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" Mrs. Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he'd ever met.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Hugh Fraser. Clairvoyance and Occult Powers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 522min
The student of occultism usually is quite familiar with the crass individual who assumes the cheap skeptical attitude toward occult matters, which attitude he expresses in his would-be "smart" remark that he "believes only in what his senses perceive". He seems to think that his cheap wit has finally disposed of the matter, the implication being that the occultist is a credulous, easy person who believes in the existence of things contrary to the evidence of the senses. ungekürzt. The Turn of the Screw , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 269min
The Turn of the Screw, a novella written by Henry James, is often considered the prototypical ghost story. The story begins: “The story had held us, round the fire, sufficiently breathless, but except the obvious remark that it was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in an old house, a strange tale should essentially be, I remember no comment uttered till somebody happened to say that it was the only case he had met in which such a visitation had fallen on a child.” ungekürzt. The Champion of the Weather , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 8min
Small talk is a staple of conversation. We say "How are you?", but we may not really want to know. We remark about the weather, but it’s usually just a way to feel less awkward. Classic storyteller O. Henry introduces us to Bud on a trip to New York. In Bud's world if you bring up the subject of weather you'd better be willing to carry on a meaningful conversation. The rule apparently has at least one exception. The humor is in the retelling. Narrated by Glenn Hascall. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Glenn Hascall. Farewell Address, Hörbuch, Digital, 45min
President Andrew Jackson bid farewell to the nation at the inauguration of Martin Van Buren, his friend and former vice president. Jackson talked of the nation’s successes in the past several years and warned against sectionalism that threatened the nation’s unity. “At every hazard and by every sacrifice, this Union must be preserved,” he urged his listeners. “What have you to gain by division and dissension?” His speech was so great that it led Senator Thomas Hart to remark, “[F]or once, a rising has been eclipsed by the setting sun.” Language: English. Artur Schnabel
Those unfamiliar with Artur Schnabel (1882-1951) will perhaps be somewhat irritated by the book's title. Is a pianist not per se a musician? Not necessarily, according to Schnabel. The artist himself propagated his Viennese teacher's half-joking claim that Schnabel would never become a pianist since he is a musician. What was intended as an entertaining remark became for Schnabel a lifelong artistic maxim. He wanted to be a facilitator between composer and listener and deplored the common practice he often observed of performers misusing music as a mere venue to display their virtuosic skills at the keyboard. Based on his comprehensive background knowledge, Schnabel founded a worldwide renowned school of piano performance. His concert activities, recordings, music editions and lectures have not only influenced musical thought to the present day, but have had a lasting effect on our concert life.- Shop: buecher
