Do you want to retire early? Is financial freedom important to you-along with health and happiness? Yes? Then this is a must-listen. Following the successful release of The Avocado Tree in South Africa, Tony Bennett brings his story and blueprint for success to the international market. Bennett's fresh and funny memoir, The Avocado Tree, follows him from a working-class childhood to the fulfillment of his personal dream: a comfortable early retirement at age 50. This wasn't the result of chance or a lucky win on the horses: Tony planned for it, and so can you. The Avocado Tree is brimming with charm and sound sense. Tony compares the coincidental nurturing and abundant fruit borne by the family avocado tree, to his financial-and family-success. Ever practical and always generous (with a dash of dodgy humour and a splash of wine), he unveils his 'Theories': 17 maxims to follow for financial stability, health and happiness, and for the satisfactions of a life well lived. In this brilliant and acclaimed book, the eminent psychiatrist Dr Anthony Storr challenges the widely held view that success in personal relationships is the only key to happiness. He argues persuasively that we pay far too little attention to some of the other great satisfactions of life - work and creativity. In a series of skilful biographical sketches, among them Beethoven, Henry James, Goya, Wittgenstein, Kipling and Beatrix Potter, he demonstrates how many of the creative geniuses of our civilisation have been solitary, by temperament of circumstance, and how the capacity to be alone is, even for those who are not creative, a sign of maturity. 'This book brings excellent news for those who, whatever their reasons for doing so, live alone... It is heartening to find a psychiatrist of Dr Storr's eminence diverging from the received wisdom'.ANITA BROOKNER,' Spectator' 'This is a short book, but so rich in ideas, and presented with such a telling combination of gentleness and authority, that it is also exceptionally absorbing and thought-provoking'.CLAIRE TOMALIN,' Observer' 'Storr is an incapable of writing an uninteresting paragraph'.NORMAN STONE,' Sunday Times' 'This is an important, even revolutionary book. If it saves naturally non-sociable people from anxiety about 'not belonging' and enables them to come to terms with their solitude it will have done a notable human service'.ERIC CHRISTIANSEN,' Independent'

Originally written as 13 individual books around 397 CE, Augustine of Hippo's Confessions is one of the most referenced works in the Western literary tradition. Augustine lived from 354-430 CE, and the work is in part an autobiography. But it also tells us much about the period in which he lived. The first nine books draw a compelling narrative of the first 43 years of Augustine's life, which were spent in North Africa and Italy. In the 10th book, Augustine uses these experiences as a meditation on the nature of memory. Finally, he ranges more widely, using the last three books to comment on the Bible's book of Genesis. It is a measure of his immense intellectual range that he can switch from the personal to the philosophical and finally to the contemplative in this great work. Augustine's title expresses something of the double meaning of the work itself. In a seminal article from 1957, Joseph Ratzinger (eventually Pope Benedict XVI) showed that the title functions to express the work both as a "confession" of past sins and as a "confession" of praise for God. Confessions is an intricate work of literature, long recognized for its poetic prose and penetrating psychological insight into the trials and satisfactions to be found in the act of confession. Augustine's work has stood the test of time and continues to be taught and read/listened to all over the world. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. A spirited and revealing memoir by the most celebrated editor of his time. After editing The Columbia Review, staging plays at Cambridge, and a stint in the greeting-card department of Macy's, Robert Gottlieb stumbled into a job at Simon and Schuster. By the time he left to run Alfred A. Knopf a dozen years later, he was the editor in chief, having discovered and edited Catch-22 and The American Way of Death, among other best sellers. At Knopf, Gottlieb edited an astonishing list of authors, including Toni Morrison, John Cheever, Doris Lessing, John le Carré, Michael Crichton, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Graham, Robert Caro, Nora Ephron, and Bill Clinton - not to mention Bruno Bettelheim and Miss Piggy. In Avid Reader, Gottlieb writes with wit and candor about succeeding William Shawn as the editor of The New Yorker, and the challenges and satisfactions of running America's preeminent magazine. Sixty years after joining Simon and Schuster, Gottlieb is still at it - editing, anthologizing, and, to his surprise, writing. But this account of a life founded upon reading is about more than the arc of a singular career - one that also includes a lifelong involvement with the world of dance. It's about transcendent friendships and collaborations, "elective affinities" and family, psychoanalysis and Bakelite purses, the alchemical relationship between writer and editor, the glory days of publishing, and - always - the sheer exhilaration of work. ungekürzt.
