Are We Still Rolling?: Studios, Drugs and Rock 'N' Roll - One Man's Journey Recording Classic Albums , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 732min
From the author's first glimpse of a magical recording studio in the mid-1960s up through a busy career that continues to the present day, this rollicking story can only be told by those that were there. As the young tape operator on sessions for the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Cocker at the famed Olympic Sound Studios in London, Phill learned the ropes from experienced engineers and producers such as Glyn Johns and Eddie Kramer. Phill soon worked his way up engineering sessions for Mott the Hoople, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley and many other legendary rockers. He eventually became a freelance engineer/producer and worked with Roxy Music, Go West, Talk Talk, and Robert Plant. But more than a recollection of participating in some of the most treasured music of the past 40 years, this is a man's journey through life as Phill struggles to balance his home and family with a job where drug abuse, chaos, rampant egos, greed, lies and the increasingly invasive record business take their toll. It's also a cautionary tale, where long workdays and what once seemed like harmless indulgences become health risks, yet eventually offer a time to reflect back on. ungekürzt. Language: English. Chasing Blackbeard, while fiction, was written with breathtaking historical accuracy. This is a story of love, drug abuse, jealousy, and eventually an unseen betrayal that will leave you re-listening to find clues you may have missed throughout the story. Anyone that has ever enjoyed learning about Blackbeard, piracy, or eastern North Carolina will thoroughly enjoy this piece. An Unquenchable Thirst: A Memoir , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1156min
An unforgettable spiritual autobiography about a search for meaning that begins alongside one of the great religious icons of our time and ends with a return to the secular world. At seventeen, Mary Johnson saw Mother Teresa’s face on the cover of Time and experienced her calling. Eighteen months later, she entered a convent in the South Bronx to begin her religious training. Not without difficulty, this bright, independent-minded Texas teenager eventually adapted to the sisters’ austere life of poverty and devotion, and in time became close to Mother Teresa herself. Still, beneath the white and blue sari beat the heart of an ordinary young woman facing the struggles we all share - the desire for love and connection, meaning and identity. During her twenty years with the Missionaries of Charity, Sister Donata, as she was known, grappled with her faith, her sexuality, the politics of the order, and her complicated relationship with Mother Teresa. Eventually, she left the church to find her own path - one that led to love and herself. Provocative, profound, and emotionally charged, An Unquenchable Thirst presents a rare, privileged view of Mother Teresa. At the same time, it is a unique and magnificent memoir of self-discovery. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mary Johnson. What Did I Do Wrong? , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 298min
What Did I Do Wrong? is the first book of a 3-book series sharing Eveline Sandy's personal journey of resilience and perseverance. Born in the early fifties to a single mother in East Germany, Eve eventually moved with her mother to the United States to live with her mother's new husband, a US serviceman whom Eve knew as Dad. With this new man frequently absent and detached from their lives, Eve and her mother were regularly left alone to fend for themselves. They moved frequently, creating a very unstable family life. Even so, this was nothing compared to the trauma that would haunt Eve for the rest of her life. At 12, she became the victim of a violent crime - an event that reverberates in her life even today. Later, when she was in high school, her mother was diagnosed with cancer - and they were both permanently abandoned by the man she knew as her father. In her adulthood, she became a single mother herself, and her mother eventually lost her battle with cancer. Even through all of the trials, tribulations, and triumphs that life has thrown at her, Eve's immeasurable faith and trust in the Lord have helped and guided her, keeping her on the path of love and forgiveness. ungekürzt. The Edge of Darkness , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 26min
This book brings together two collections of poems.Part one of the book is a collection of pieces that I composed between February 2004 and December 2005. In February 2004 I learned that, due to an eye condition, I would eventually lose my sight, and these pieces reflect both my frustrations and sadness as I learned more about the condition and why it was happening. In many ways they express the confusion and anger that I felt during that period of time as gradually my usable vision dwindled away to nothing. But, as you will see from the later part of the collection, this ever-changing roller coaster of emotions eventually began to slow down, and hope and self-belief began to triumph over despair and anger. Thankfully, as time passed, my life began to steer in a more positive direction, away from the self-destructive path that I would have inevitably taken had I not found some degree of inner peace. The second part of the book is a collection of stand-alone pieces that I wrote for a variety of reasons. Some were inspired by personal experiences, others by people or historical events, and some by my love of sci-fi and fantasy - while others were written "just because". ungekürzt. Language: English. Rubens in the Making: Studies in World Art, Book 68 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 8min
The new exhibition at the National Gallery in London ought to be yet another triumph for an institution that is now running a very ambitious exhibition program. Who can forget the shows recently devoted to Titian, El Greco, and Vermeer? Yet this event makes a curiously uneasy effect. There are several, not just one, reasons for this. The first is that Rubens, of all great artists the one who enjoyed the greatest degree of worldly success, had distinctly uneasy beginnings. Of sound Flemish bourgeois stock, he was born in 1577 at Siegen in Westphalia. His parents had fled there to escape persecution, because they were Calvinist converts. His father, Jan, a lawyer, became the intimate adviser and eventually the lover of Princess Anna of Saxony, the second wife of William the Silent, the champion of the Protestant cause. When the affair was discovered, Jan was placed under house arrest but was eventually allowed to go to Cologne, where he died in 1587. His wife, with her four children, returned to Antwerp, where they all re-converted to Catholicism. The young Rubens was placed as a page in an aristocratic household, but was later allowed to study as a painter. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Carper. An emotionally rich, moving and nuanced memoir from the Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper. As a young boy of eight, Jonny Bairstow was dealt a cruel blow. His father David 'Bluey' Bairstow, the combative and very popular wicketkeeper and captain of Yorkshire, took his own life at the age of 47. David left behind Jonny; Jonny's sister, Becky, and half brother, Andy; and his wife, Janet, who had recently been diagnosed with cancer at the time of his death. From these incredibly tough circumstances, Jonny and his family strived to find an even keel and come to terms with the loss of their father and husband. Jonny found his way through his dedication to sport. He was a gifted and natural athlete, with potential careers ahead of him in rugby and football, but he eventually chose cricket and came to build a career that followed in his father's footsteps, eventually reaching the pinnacle of the sport and breaking the record for most Test runs in a year by a wicketkeeper. Written with multiple-award-winning writer Duncan Hamilton, this is an incredible story of triumph over adversity and a memoir with far-reaching lessons about determination and the will to overcome. ungekürzt.
