Death and the Devil , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 62min
Death and the Devil: A Dance of Death in Three Scenes by Frank Wedekind. Translated by Samuel A. Eliot and Denis Daly. Cast: The Marquis Casti-Piani - John Burlinson; Fräulein Elfriede von Malchus - Amanda Friday; Herr König - Mark Crowle-Groves; Lisiska - Leanne Yau. Stage directions read by Denis Daly. Audio edited by Denis Daly. This play forms part of a tetralogy which focuses on one of Wedekind's obsessive themes: the destructive interplay between primal sexual urges and social convention. Each play revolves around a powerful young female character, who has the power to control and captivate men, but who in turn is destroyed by the exercise of that power. In this play, the dominant female is Fräulein Elfriede von Malchus, an idealistic crusader who visits a brothel operated by the cynical impresario Casti-Piani in order to rescue a young woman who has fallen into his clutches. In a perverse way, Wedekind's plays are morality tales, in which he gives a new twist to the biblical admonition; "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." In most cases, when characters finally do become aware of who they are and what they have done, the knowledge leads to their destruction. In Death and the Devil, Casti-Piani kills himself when he learns that prostitution can actually provide its victims with a path to moral glorification. ungekürzt. Language: English. Antigone by Sophocles , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 89min
Antigone by Sophocles. Translated by Sir George Young. Presented by the Online Stage. Sophocles (497 BC-406 BC), Aeschylus, and Euripides formed a trio of ancient Greek tragedians whose works represent the foundation of the Western tradition of classic drama. Of the more than 100 plays written by Sophocles, seven have survived to the present day. Perhaps the most famous of these are the three that are now known as the Theban plays: Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. After the death of their father, Oedipus, Antigone and Ismene return to Thebes. The ruler is their unyielding uncle by marriage, Creon, who assumed command after the death of the sons of Oedipus, Eteocles, and Polynices in a fratricidal struggle to take control of the city. Creon has the body of one brother buried with full civic honors but forbids the burial of the body of the other, whom he regards as a traitor. Antigone's challenge to Creon's decree, which she considers unjust, results in the extinction of the family line of Oedipus. Cast: Libby Stephenson as Antigone, Amanda Friday as Ismene, Alan Weyman as Creon, Marty Kris as First Senator, Peter Tucker as Sentinel, Jennifer Fournier as Haemon, John Burlinson as Tiresias, K. G.Cross as Messenger in Attendance on Creon, Cate Barratt as Eurydice; Chorus performed by Brett Downey, Elizabeth Klett, Ed Humpal, and Cate Barratt; stage directions read by Grace Garrett. ungekürzt. Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 387min
Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) may be considered the Canadian counterpart to Mark Twain. For many years he was professor of economics at Magill University and published a number of well-regarded texts on economics and political science. However, he is best known today for his many volumes of humorous fiction. During the 1920s he was one of the most widely read authors in the English-speaking world and was considered by Jack Benny and Groucho Marx to be one of the greatest comic writers of all time. In Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich, Leacock applies a satirical scalpel to the foibles and pretensions of the wealthy and the powerful. He not only probes the quirks of traditional power structures like corporations (public and private), political parties, universities, and churches but also finds time to poke fun at one of his favorite targets - the world of psychic phenomena. A Little Dinner with Mr Lucullus Fyshe The Wizard of Finance The Arrested Philanthropy of Mr. Tomlinson The Yahi-Bahi Oriental Society of Mrs. Rasselyer-Brown The Love Story of Mr. Peter Spillikins The Rival Churches of St. Asaph and St. Osoph The Ministrations of the Rev. Cattle Brands: A Collection of Western Camp-Fire Stories, Volume 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 67min
This set contains two of Andy Adams' enjoyable tales of life on the cattle trail of the American West. Adams was one of the most authentic of the classic western writers, bringing firsthand experience to his depictions of cowhands, rogues, and other remarkable characters on the frontier. Volume two includes two tales that highlight Adams unique and subtle brand of humor: "Seigerman's Percent", in which three cow punchers come up with an ingenious way to make ends meet during the slack winter period between cattle drives; and "Bad Medicine", the tale of a "Down East" moneybags who learns the folly of trying to ramrod a cattle drive himself. ungekürzt.
