How did the nightingale get its golden voice? A beautiful creation story answers the question. The mountains, trees, and plants are young and full of color, but the animals are dull and drab, so the painter gets to work. She dabs dots on ladybugs and spots on butterflies, stripes on zebras and pentagons on giraffes. Finally, she comes to the very last creature—a patient beetle—and uses her special pot of gold paint. The painter is about to pack up to go home when a little gray bird flies out of the forest. The paint box is empty, but on the tip of the painter's brush remains a tiny bit of gold, which she drops at the back of the bird's throat. And when the painter asks the bird to sing, golden notes tumble from its beak. This timeless tale, with its stylish and striking illustrations, will appeal to children and adults alike.

From the beloved, best-selling author of All over but the Shoutin', a delectable, rollicking food memoir, cookbook, and loving tribute to a region, a vanishing history, a family, and, especially, his mother. Margaret Bragg does not own a single cookbook. She measures in "dabs" and "smidgens" and "tads" and "you know, hon, just some". She cannot be pinned down on how long to bake corn bread ("about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the mysteries of your oven"). Her notion of farm-to-table is a flatbed truck. But she can tell you the secrets to perfect mashed potatoes, corn pudding, redeye gravy, pinto beans and hambone, stewed cabbage, short ribs, chicken and dressing, biscuits, and butter rolls. The irresistible stories in this audiobook are of long memory - many of them predate the Civil War, handed down skillet by skillet, from one generation of Braggs to the next.  In The Best Cook in the World, Rick Bragg finally preserves his heritage by telling the stories that framed his mother's cooking and education, from childhood into old age. Because good food always has a good story, and a recipe, writes Bragg, is a story like anything else.  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rick Bragg. After viewing the security video, you hear someone cough behind you. Your wife clears her throat. You hunch over in the office chair and pretend not to hear her. Your hand scrambles for the mouse. You try to find the cursor on the monitor. That damn tiny arrow, you can't see it. You feel a soft hand curl atop yours. You turn your head to the side and find that your wife is smiling at you. She looks down at your lap and smirks. Busted. You had been jacking off to the video. Splooge covers your hand. Your wife reaches down and dips a finger into the gunk. With the tip of her tongue, she dabs a drop from her finger. "Mm, not bad," she says. "So, you're not upset then?" "I guess not. I mean, I don't know. I was furious at first." "But then you got turned on?" "I think that's obvious." "He'll be back next week. You want to listen in? Maybe even watch?" "I haven't completely wrapped my head around this yet. And you're talking about doing it again, with me watching? I don't think so. We need to discuss some - " "What was your favorite part?" your wife interrupts with a question. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Desiree Divine. An essay by Edward Lucie-Smith on David Hockney's portraits exhibited at the Royal Academy's "82 Portraits and One Still-Life", and also "David Hockney and the Yorkshire Landscape" at RA in 2012.David Hockney has, after a much reported domestic catastrophe in Bridlington - the untimely death of a young member of his entourage - returned to the peace and quiet of California. He nevertheless remains a British national treasure. No other British artist enjoys so much affection - combined with a real, solid, celebrity status - among his compatriots. The huge turnout for the private view of his new exhibition at the R.A. - an institution of which he is of course a member - offered ample proof of that, if any were needed. No hyped-up YBA could have matched it, though Damien Hirst is, one suspects, a considerable richer man, with a wider and hungrier international market. The show was entitled "82 Portraits and One Still-Life". The still-life is there, laid out on blue bench, as a substitute for a sitter who at the last minute couldn’t come on the appointed day. All the sitters occupy the same armchair, placed at exactly the same distance from the artist. They are all seen full length. Sometimes the floor on which their feet rest is blue, while the wall behind them is green. Sometimes it’s the other way round. All were painted on canvases of exactly the same size, in, at most, three sessions. Sometimes only in two. The lighting is the same throughout - clear and shadow-less, though the chair is allowed to cast a small shadow now and then to emphasize its three-dimensionality. Hockney has no interest in the moodiness and mystery of Rembrandtian chiaroscuro. He also seems to have little interest in brushwork as such. There are none of the flickering brushstrokes - the little glittering dabs of paint - you find in high-fashion Edwardian portraits by Sargent and Boldini, to whom Hockney can now, in respect of his position within our society, be c ungekürzt. Let's Destroy the World Tonight Hailing from DETROIT ROCK CITY!! Switchblade justice plays a straight forward brand of PUNK n ROLL with PURE RAW POWER!! This CD was Recorded at the Legendary Ghetto Recorders by the LEGENDARY Producer JIM DIAMOND known for his work with such greats as The New Bomb Turks and so Many More!! Switchblade Justice is a band of worthy veterens of the great Detroit rock and roll and punk scene. Hailing from the ashes of their past bands (The Bomb Pops, Capitol Cities and The Dragstripers) their talents create a fresh new sound but with their influences proudly displayed ! Metro Times: 'Switchblade Justice: Not even Judge Dredd called for switchblade justice, which sounds awfully harsh. But harsh fits, 'cause these guys play barroom punk rock damn well.' Real Detroit: 'Switchblade Justice sound punk, but aren't upbeat. They have a melancholy tone but aren't emo by any stretch. The lead singer's growl isn't of the angry sort. They just don't fit neatly into any punk category. The songs have the underlying sound of deep pain like an electrified Johnny Cash.If Johnny listened to rock, moved to the city for an assembly job and got laid off.' Rod and Kulture. Spring 2011: Spring issue of 'Rod & Culture'... Here is a snippet of the review 'The songs are all fresh yet familer at the same time. Anyone that has punk rock past will enjoy this album I'm sure. Metro Times top 10 of 2010: Switchblade Justice, Let's Destroy The World Tonight: Right at the tail-end of the year, these local rockabilly-inspired punks smashed one out of the park. Switchblade Justice is part Misfits, part Social D, and all class. Best of all, they play out a lot all over town so you can catch them at a venue near you Deep Kutz Blog: Switchblade Justice - Album Release 11/26 - Corktown One of Detroit's preeminent purveyors of punk, Switchblade Justice, invite you to Detroy the World with them. The day after you give thanks for everything, commence then, to give into that spasmodic tazmanian devilish punk inside of you to riccochet all 'round a cacophonous barn, spurred on with the sinister charm of these veteran rockers and the tunes from their new LP. The one-two punching bag drums and chugging bass most effectively connect these trounces to the punk aesthetic, but the vocals are some kind of mutated Elivs-y bubble-gum croon and the swaggering guitars ring so closely to a classic rock swing and shamble. Blend a few dabs of hardcore headslamming catharsis, with teaspoon stiring of nostalgic comic-book cracked revivalism, and boil it in a pot bubbling with the vigor and vile of straight up rock n roll - spill it into a bowl, slam it down with a whiskey chaser and get your ass back up and moving with those tumbling drums. Take a listen:.
