    Der Begriff Eskapismus etablierte sich im Feld der Literaturkritik in den 1930er Jahren als Aufforderung zur literarischen Beschäftigung mit der eigenen Gegenwart. Dem in diesem Verwendungskontext ausgedrückten Verlangen nach Engagement auf Ebene von Autorinnen, Leserinnen und Texten stellt diese Arbeit eine wertungsfreie Definition von Eskapismus als einem Bedürfnis gegenüber, welches durch die temporäre Bewegung aus einer Abwendungs- in eine Zuwendungssphäre, also eine Bewegung aus der Gegenwart in eine (literarische) Gegenwelt, befriedigt werden kann. Der Analysegegenstand, an dem Eskapismus dabei als literaturwissenschaftliche Analysekategorie produktiv gemacht wird, ist das Werk des anglo-irischen Autors Lord Dunsany (1878-1957). Dunsanys fantastische Texte werden nicht nur in besonderer Weise durch die Gegenüberstellung von Gegenwart und Gegenwelt strukturiert, der kritische Kern seines Werks erschließt sich auch gerade analog zu seiner Entwicklung einer Poetik des Eskapismus.
