At a time when "Friday night lights" shone only on white high school football games, African American teams across Texas burned up the gridiron on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The segregated high schools in the Prairie View Interscholastic League (the African American counterpart of the University Interscholastic League, which excluded black schools from membership until 1967) created an exciting brand of football that produced hundreds of outstanding players, many of whom became college All-Americans, All-Pros, and Pro Football Hall of Famers, including NFL greats such as "Mean" Joe Green (Temple Dunbar), Otis Taylor (Houston Worthing), Dick "Night Train" Lane (Austin Anderson), Ken Houston (Lufkin Dunbar), and Bubba Smith (Beaumont Charlton-Pollard).  Thursday Night Lights tells the inspiring, largely unknown story of African American high school football in Texas. Drawing on interviews, newspaper stories, and memorabilia, Michael Hurd introduces the players, coaches, schools, and towns where African Americans built powerhouse football programs under the PVIL leadership. He covers 50 years (1920-1970) of high school football history, including championship seasons and legendary rivalries such as the annual Turkey Day Classic game between Houston schools Jack Yates and Phillis Wheatley, which drew standing-room-only crowds of up to 40,000, making it the largest prep sports event in postwar America. In telling this story, Hurd explains why the PVIL was necessary, traces its development, and shows how football offered a potent source of pride and ambition in the black community, helping black kids succeed both athletically and educationally in a racist society.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.  ungekürzt. This Magic Moment is a heartwarming true story about a white insurance executive's three-decade friendship with four legendary African American singers and their remarkable journey together. Three were Rock and Roll Hall of Famers - Prentiss Barnes and Harvey Fugua of The Moonglows, Bill Pinkney of The Original Drifters. The fourth was Rufus McKay, a Mississippi treasure and lead singer of The Red Tops. The book is a celebration of the power of music, friendship and trusting God's plan.Anyone who fondly remembers the 1950s and 60s will love Morris' vivid descriptions and nostalgic look back at life and culture during these simpler times. Music lovers, especially fans of Doo wop, early R&B, vocal group harmony and Rock and Roll, will appreciate the extensive music history and backstories woven throughout the book and be amazed how a fellow fan, a regular guy "not in the business", had a front row seat at some of the industry's biggest events, even performing onstage with some of his heroes. People of faith will be inspired and touched reading how God used Bill and the bonds that were formed among these five men to accomplish His purpose and bless all their lives. Bill knows he only had these amazing experiences because God's hand was writing the story. This Magic Moment reminds us that true friendship is possible among people of different backgrounds when we focus on the things we have in common; that music has a magical power to bring people together and instill shared, universal emotion; and that sometimes God works in mysterious ways!Author: William H. (Bill) Morris, a lifelong resident of Jackson, Mississippi, is the founder and president of The William Morris Group, an industry-leading insurance consulting and marketing firm. He also published a coffee-table book, Ole Miss at Oxford: A Part of our Heart and Soul. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William Morris. Nine-time NBA Champion coach Phil Jackson knows all about being in the spotlight, about high-profile, high-pressure seasons coaching gigantic personalities through adversity and controversy in the middle of a media hothouse in which every move is another headline, another installment in the soap opera. But nothing, not six championships with the Bulls of Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, and Scottie Pippen, not three previous championships with the Lakers of Shaq and Kobe, had quite prepared him for the only-in-Hollywood high-wire act of the Lakers' 2003-2004 season. In The Last Season: A Team In Search of Its Soul, Jackson tells the full inside story of the season that proved to be the final ride of this great Lakers dynasty. From its beginnings in the off-season, with the signing of the future Hall-of-Famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton and the enormous expectations it created, and the bombshell news of the felony sexual-assault charges against Kobe Bryant, one of the league's marquee superstars, Jackson describes the many challenges that arose during this turbulent season. Juggling enormous egos with enormous sums at stake, managing difficult relationships and public feuds, facing injuries, contract disputes, and team meltdowns, all in the shadow of the Kobe Bryant trial-slash-media circus, Phil Jackson somehow guided his team through to its fourth NBA Finals in his five years as its coach. There, finally, his team ran out of road, a failure Jackson examines with the same deep honesty and wisdom he brings to bear on the rest of this amazing season. Few seasons in memory can rival this one for drama, and fewer coaches rival Phil Jackson in the ability to write about it with such wisdom and clarity. The combination has produced, in The Last Season, a book of tremendous human drama and timeless appeal, rich in lessons about coaching and about life. ungekürzt. Language: English. The greatest job in the world! From the very first chapter to the very end, this is an enjoyable chronicle of what went on in the clubhouse, dugout, and on the field during the early 1950s as seen through the eyes of the visiting team batboy whenever the Washington Senators played at Griffith Stadium. Back then, baseball was very different from what it is today. It was the profoundly American pastime. It was more exciting. Players were more fun and much more colorful, and most of these awesome people would give a fan a free autograph with a kindly smile. In this audiobook, you'll find out what it was like for a kid to rub elbows with Hall of Famers and other great stars, and to actually get onto the ballfield, practicing with, and getting playing tips from his heroes. (Imagine receiving batting lessons from Ted Williams or getting tips on pitching from Satchel Paige!) You'll hear about stars like the young and somewhat shy Mickey Mantle, who hit that tape-measure home run out of Griffith Stadium on April 17, 1953; about Satchel Paige's pitching prowess and his on-and off-field antics; and get a first-hand look at the Ted Williams that few people got to see. And much more! Travel to Cooperstown with the author and his wife Darlene some three decades later in the former batboy's life, for a meeting with the National Baseball Hall of Fame's curator, and learn about that meeting's most surprising ending. In this audiobook, you'll find scores of interesting stories about unforgettable moments in the game, and see what the batboy saw as he mingled with legendary players of the 1950s, a time that may well go down as the greatest in American baseball history! ungekürzt. They came into the world as one - inseparably tied together at their chests - yet they were two. They were born on May 11, 1811, on a bamboo mat in a small houseboat afloat on the river in the village of Meklong, located 60 miles west of Bangkok, the capital of Siam. They became world celebrities, American citizens, married two native-born Southern sisters, and between them fathered 21 children, while acquiring respectable status as landowners, famers, slave owners, and pillars of their local community. "They" were the famous, the first, the original Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng, and their story is told in this fascinating and remarkable book in such detail, with such enormous insight and warmth, and with such a superb sense of drama, that one understands, for the first time, just how bizarre, heroic, tragic, and human their lives in fact were. Linked by Nature, Chang and Eng were fated to spend their lives joined by a thick, fleshy ligament resembling an arm, five to six inches long and eight inches in circumference, that connected them at the base of their chests. Yet they could swim, perform gymnastic feats and lead "normal" lives. Together they built their own house, opened a store, became wealthy gentlemen farmers, skilled horse breakers and, when necessary, defended themselves with their fists. The most fascinating part of the story is, of course, their physical link to each other; for as Chang and Eng grew older, each dreamed of a separate life, despite the obvious risks that an operation would entail, and each feared that the death of one would cause the death of the other. Nor were their natures altogether harmonious, for each was a highly individual person: Eng, quiet, contemplative, and even-tempered; Chang, hot-tempered, quarrelsome and, as he grew older, inclined to bouts of heavy drinking. Chang's insistence on going to his own house in midwinter (the brothers arranged to alternate three days in one's house and three days i ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Adashefski.
