When Tears Don't Matter
Following Cry Sadness into the Coming Rain (Steidl, 2017), which documents the seared landscapes of the Namib Desert and was shortlisted for the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis 18 19, Margaret Courtney-Clarke now turns her lens to the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. The inspiration for When Tears Don't Matter comes, in part, from her grandfather's photographs of almost a century earlier during his mandate as Secretary for South West Africa (now Namibia), some of which are reproduced in this book. 10,000 kilometers of formidable terrain takes Courtney-Clarke across remote bushveld, sand and salt pans to drought-stricken conservancies, tenuous farming communities that function as holding tanks for "inconvenient indigenes," "cultural villages" and peri-urban squatments, as far east as she could travel through the Namibian Kalahari Desert.Largely invisible to the outside world, the bushmen today are dispossessed of their land: a "shadow people" sidelined by officialdom, economic inequity and outdated mythologies which present them as living in an "uncontaminated" state. In this complex country where notions of truth and objectivity (and whiteness) are constantly explored, the battle against disenfranchisement is largely unsuccessful. Courtney-Clarke's photographs lie at the crossroads between documentary and activism, and their basis is an unfailing empathy with her subjects-in her words: "What is crucial in this work is to give place to a voice in search of a listener."- Shop: buecher

Into the Labyrinth: The Making of a Modern-Day Theseus , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 846min
Project Spinnaker was a joint Canada-US defense project conceived in the waning days of the Cold War. Spinnaker’s secret purpose was to reassert Canada’s Arctic sovereignty by providing the capability to monitor submarine traffic in Canadian Arctic waters. The star of Project Spinnaker was Theseus - a massive, Canadian-made, autonomous underwater vehicle designed for a single purpose: laying fiber-optic cable in ice-covered waters. More than 2,500 years after the mythical Greek hero Theseus ventured into the labyrinth on the island of Crete to slay the Minotaur, the submarine Theseus was launched into an undersea labyrinth with a strikingly similar goal: lay nearly 200 kilometers of fiber-optic cable on the seafloor of Canada’s Arctic, then turn around and follow it back out. With a foreword by Dr. James R. McFarlane, OC, CD, P.Eng., FCAE, and endorsements by several well-known experts in the sub-sea industry, Into the Labyrinth provides a fascinating glimpse into the sub-sea industry of the 1980s and ‘90s set against the backdrop of Canada’s stunning yet hostile High Arctic. ungekürzt. A Tad Too Tight: A True Adventure Story: Sail Epic, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 33min
A book remembering a moment in time. A moment I knew, holy crap, this is serious and everyone is looking at me. It was then I realized I am the captain!Having survived my first long solo sail a year ago, I figured it was time to take it up a notch! Sailing has been a passion project of mine. From a young age, I have been set to many different activities by my overactive enthusiasm, from blazing trails on bikes through thicket and bog alike, that run along the local river. To pulling fish too small to fry from that very same river. Despite the wild sound of it, I lived in a suburb of a city in the smack dab center of Canada. If you don't know the geography of the area, "prairies" is about all I can say. The only ocean or sea I knew of anywhere near was 2,000 kilometers east or west.... To say it simply, I thought sailing was only in movies and for pirates! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: CJ MacKenzie P.. Getting There , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 572min
When Sue Williams set out on a 10-year series of journeys around the world, she expected glamour, excitement, a leisurely education. She simply didn't bargain for disaster, spine-tingling terror, and the kind of mind-numbing embarrassment that confronted her at nearly every turn. In fact, if she'd known she would wake up naked inside a sleeping bag, with all her belongings vanished, on a patch of wasteland in Central African Republic; get lost on a dark mountain top in Malawi; be stalked by a wife-hungry politician in Mexico; hitch 1000 kilometers in the wrong direction in Argentina; and discover, too late, she'd just eaten dog stew in China, she would have never left home in the first place! Getting There is the hilarious, terrifying and, most of all, inspiring account of Sue's travels across the globe over 20 years. It isn't about destinations or pleasant arrivals, but journeys and the battle to get there, fuelled by curiosity, faith in humanity, naivety, and even extraordinary ineptitude - the tales of the true traveler. ungekürzt. Dead Space, 2401 AD Kyle Tanner is about to die. A crew member was found dead, minus his head and hands. Not the worst Tanner has ever seen, but the deeper he delves, the more nightmarish it becomes. A shadowy figure, bleeding from his hands, assaults Tanner in his quarters. Then two more turn up dead, missing their heads and hands as well. With no one to trust and everyone a suspect - even the intriguing chief engineer, Shaheen - Tanner must navigate a crew on the brink of madness to uncover a conspiracy that could threaten the whole of the human race. The Dark Side , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 780min
In this dark and gripping sci-fi noir, an exiled police detective arrives at a lunar penal colony just as a psychotic android begins a murderous odyssey across the far side of the moon. Purgatory is the lawless moon colony of eccentric billionaire Fletcher Brass: a mecca for war criminals, murderers, sex fiends, and adventurous tourists. You can't find better drugs, cheaper plastic surgery, or a more ominous travel advisory anywhere in the universe. But trouble is brewing in Brass' black-market heaven. When an exiled cop arrives in this wild new frontier, he immediately finds himself investigating a string of ruthless assassinations in which Brass himself and his equally ambitious daughter are the chief suspects. Meanwhile, 2,000 kilometers away, an amnesiac android, Leonardo Black, rampages across the lunar surface. Programmed with only the notorious "Brass Code" - a compendium of corporate laws that would make Ayn Rand blush - Black has only one goal in mind: to find Purgatory and conquer it. Visual, visceral, and tons of fun, The Dark Side fuses hard science with brutal crime and lunar adventure. It's an intense, stylish, and action-packed thriller with a body count to match. ungekürzt.
