Overcome Anxiety : Cure Anxiety, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 232min
This is the second book in The Cure Anxiety SeriesIt can happen to feel terrified in the midst of people, in closed or open spaces: These are agoraphobia and claustrophobia. You may not be able to take a flight or climb the escalators, or you may not be able to see a cat without shivering. These are phobias that can give rise to panic attacks: Your heartbeat accelerates, your breathing becomes labored, you feel like you are losing control, you seek refuge in avoiding the supposed risks. Fear, however, is a fundamental and reasonable emotion, since it triggers the mechanisms of attack or escape when we find ourselves in danger. It can therefore save our lives, while what can ruin it is the fear of fear, the preventative fear of the psychophysiological reactions that our organism may have in the face of what we perceive as a threat. It is therefore necessary to put this emotion into the right perspective in order to become its master again. But what is the way out of the vicious circle of self-generating phobia? We do not need a long psychotherapy, but rather a paradoxical strategy that guides us to face fear, indeed to increase it to the point of cancelling it. To recover from panic attacks, in fact, a short targeted therapy is enough, based on the logical and suggestive language of the therapist, on unusual tasks that the patient has to perform to the letter, on the idea that it is necessary to "put out the fire by adding wood". ungekürzt. History's Greatest Mysteries: The Shroud of Turin , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 64min
For centuries professional historians have labored through the painstaking task of documenting history as accurately as possible, but even with modern technology, archaeology, and records, some questions have eluded attempts to answer them. From the origins of Atlantis to the lost colony of Roanoke, the mysteries behind some of history's most famous people and events have fascinated countless generations. In Charles River Editors' History's Greatest Mysteries series, listeners can discover the known, the unknown, and the possible answers to history's most enduring questions in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. Critics call it one of the greatest pieces of fraud in religious history. Believers call it one of the most important artifacts in Christianity. Everyone agrees that it's mysterious, interesting, and controversial. The Shroud of Turin has been a controversial relic from the time it was first publicly displayed in Northern France in the 14th century until the much-awaited carbon 14 tests were performed on the cloth in 1988. One group consisting of religious believers and agnostic scientists has argued vehemently that this shroud represents the actual burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth while another group of religious believers and critical scientists and scholars has argued that the Shroud of Turin is a medieval forgery created by an artist for Geoffrey de Charny or one of his ancestors in 14th century France. Indeed, the position one takes on the shroud seems to cut across the usual divisions of creedal affirmation or general education level. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Bloede. The Candy Man of Houston: The Dean Corll Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 120min
Dean Corll was an electrician for Houston Power and Light, but most of Henley's friends knew him as the Candy Man, so named because he had labored for years in the candy manufacturing plant that he and his mother had once owned. Corll was famous for giving away candy to the kids. Little did they know that "the Candy Man of Houston" was in fact a sadistic, cruel, remorseless rapist and murderer. Between September 25, 1970 and August 3, 1973, Corll killed at least 28 young men and boys, and the actual number of victims may have been more than 30. They were all systematically lured into his trap and then beaten, tortured, raped, and strangled to death, and most victims found bore evidence of sexual torture: pubic hairs had been plucked out, genitals had been chewed, objects had been inserted into their rectums, and glass rods had been shoved into their penis and smashed. In the aftermath, two young men, Elmer Wayne Henley and David Brooks, Corll's two main accomplices in the heinous crimes, confessed that they had been forced to participate against their will, and Corll himself - by now having been shot dead by Henley - was the lone culprit in the torturous murders. But was he? Author Brian Lee Tucker - having culled information from documented interviews, taped confessions, newspaper coverage, magazine articles, and court transcripts, provides an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look into who the real culprits were in the crimes, which at the time of their discovery, the Houston Mass Murders were considered the worst example of serial murder in American history. ungekürzt. County: Life, Death, and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 426min
The amazing tale of County is the story of one of America's oldest and most unusual urban hospitals. From it's inception as a "Poor House" dispensing free medical care to indigents, Chicago's Cook County Hospital has been both a renowned teaching hospital and the healthcare provider of last resort for the city's uninsured. County covers more than thirty years of its history, beginning in the late 1970s when the author began his internship, to the "Final Rounds" when the enormous iconic Victorian hospital building was replaced and hundreds of former trainees gathered to bid it an emotional farewell. Ansell writes of the hundreds of doctors who went through the rigorous training process with him, sharing his vision of saving the world and of resurrecting a hospital on the verge of closing. County is about people, from Ansell’s mentors, including the legendary Quentin Young, to the multitude of patients whom he and County’s medical staff labored to diagnose and heal. It is a story about politics, from contentious union strikes to battles against “patient dumping”, and public health, depicting the AIDS crisis and the opening of County’s HIV/AIDS clinic, the first in the city. Finally, it is about a young man’s medical education in urban America, a coming-of-age story set against a backdrop of race, segregation and poverty. David A. Ansell, MD., a Chicago-based physician and health activist, has been an internal-medicine physician since training at Cook County Hospital in the late 1970s, where he spent seventeen years. Now chief medical officer at Rush University Medical Center, he sees patients, teaches, volunteers as a doctor at a Chicago free clinic, and participates in medical missions to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. ungekürzt. Lest We Forget: A Personal Reflection on the Formation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 237min
Robert King Churchill was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, on September 11, 1903. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States during his first year as a student at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1936, he graduated from that institution and soon thereafter, was one of a group of young men ordained to the gospel ministry by the First General Assembly of the newly formed Presbyterian Church of America (later renamed The Orthodox Presbyterian Church). He served in that church until the time of his sudden death on September 20, 1980.Mr. Churchill labored as missionary/pastor in Berkeley and Sonora, California; Roswell, New Mexico, and Amarillo, Texas. He pastored Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, from 1948 to 1959. He was always interested in young people and conducted off-campus classes with university students during his years at Berkeley. He was also active in working with young people at various camps and conferences. He served on the Board of Trustees of Westminster Seminary for more than thirty years and represented the seminary for almost two years as Field Representative. In heart and life, Bob echoed the cry of the apostle: "Woe is me if I preach not the gospel." He delighted unceasingly in the "Marvelous grace of our loving Lord...grace that is greater than all our sin." He was zealous for the whole counsel of God and had to proclaim it. But his awe before the majesty of our sovereign God did not stop at the wonders of redeeming grace: He heard the heavens declare the glory of God and reveled in the display of his handiwork in nature - in ocean, clouds, trees, hills, the green earth, and its fruit. He heard the whole creation shouting, "glory!" But most of all, he rejoiced in the songs of Zion and loved to lead the people of God in singing his praises. ungekürzt. Language: English. Summary: A Promised Land: Barack Obama , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 121min
Warning: This is a summary book, intended to harmonize with Barack Obama’s compelling story, A Promised Land, not to replace it. President Barack Obama relates the story of his unlikely journey starting as a young boy in Indonesia and Hawaii. His time in prep school showed more passion for his jump shot and partying than studying. We experience his college years under the admitted influence of Marxism, and into Harvard Law and as the President of the Law Review - which would launch his political career with a substantial write-up in The New York Times. We sample his rapid rise to the Senate and then the presidency under the tutelage of professionals like David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel of Chicago: but supposedly a “grassroots” effort. Obama gets plenty of partisan help. Favored candidates, even incumbents, step aside or hand him their campaign, and dirt leaked from sealed court documents, at just the right time, buries his opponents. His path to the presidency miraculously cleared, he finds the keynote tossed at his feet by John Kerry at the DNC to make him famous. John Kerry’s staff infuses his campaign. As Obama’s republican opponent for President, John McCain offers no plan to solve the financial crisis and ignores states he must have to win, ensuring Obama’s success. His immediate launch of an aggressive leftist agenda to “change” the world spends more than all other previous presidents combined. What is amazing is that Obama reveals compromising situations and connections, and stimulates suspicion, in his own book - either a form of confession or a series of mistakes.Whether you are an Obama lover or hater, this summary offers plenty that is new to evaluate. Whether Obama worked for himself or larger partisan and international forces, you will appreciate how hard he labored for eight years and what talents he had for oratory and inspiration based on our embarrassing history of racism against Blacks and American Indians ungekürzt. How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1241min
In 1973, a young filmmaker named George Lucas scribbled some notes for a far-fetched space-fantasy epic. More than 40 years and $37 billion later, Star Wars-related products outnumber human beings, a stormtrooper army spans the globe, and “Jediism” has become a religion in its own right. Lucas’s creation has grown into far more than a cinematic classic; it is, quite simply, one of the most lucrative, influential, and interactive franchises of all time. Yet until now the complete history of Star Wars - its influences and impact, the controversies it has spawned, its financial growth and long-term prospects - has never been told. In How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, veteran journalist Chris Taylor traces the series from the difficult birth of the original film through its sequels, the franchise’s death and rebirth, the prequels, and the preparations for a new trilogy. Taylor provides portraits of the friends, writers, artists, producers, and marketers who labored behind the scenes to turn Lucas’s idea into a legend. He also jousts with modern-day Jedi, tinkers with droid builders, and gets inside Boba Fett’s helmet, all to find out how Star Wars has attracted and inspired so many fans for so long. Since the first film’s release in 1977, Taylor shows, Star Wars has conquered our culture with a sense of lightness and exuberance, while remaining serious enough to influence politics around the world and spread a spirituality that appeals to religious groups and atheists alike. Controversial digital upgrades and critically savaged prequels have actually made the franchise stronger than ever. Now, with a new set of savvy bosses holding the reins and Episode VII on the horizon, it looks like Star Wars is just getting started. An energetic, fast-moving account of this creative and commercial phenomenon, How Star Wars Conquered the Universe explains how a filmmaker’s fragile dream beat out a surprising number of ungekürzt. History for Kids: A Biography of Robert F. Kennedy for Children , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 30min
In Charles River Editors' History for Kids series, your children can learn about history's most important people and events in an easy, entertaining, and educational way. The concise but comprehensive book will keep your kid's attention all the way to the end. In some ways, Robert Francis Kennedy (1925-1968) is the forgotten Kennedy, eclipsed in life while working in his brother John's administration, eclipsed in death both by his older brother's assassination and his younger brother's long, influential career in the Senate as a liberal lion. And yet, the politics of the 1960s and the ultimate legacy of the Kennedys, including the "Kennedy Curse", would have been incomplete without Bobby's place in the narrative. As Bobby's private life and public life played out, the two came to mirror each other. Among the Kennedy clan, Bobby remained within the shadow of older brothers Joseph Jr. and John, both of whom their father thought were destined to become political scions. And ultimately, it was Ted who cast the longest political shadow, serving for decades in government. But Bobby may have been the most intellectual and ideological of them all. And it was Bobby who worked behind the scenes to help advance John's political career, including his political campaigns and as Attorney General in his administration. Eventually, with the deaths of his brothers, Bobby rose to become the leader of the Kennedy family, at the same time his political prominence rose. Today, unfortunately, Bobby is best remembered for his assassination, the way in which it helped perpetuate the "Kennedy Curse", and the fact that his political promise, including potentially becoming president in 1968, was never fulfilled. History for Kids: A Biography of Robert F. Kennedy for Children looks at Bobby's place in the political and cultural narrative of the Kennedys and the 1960s, but it also humanizes the middle brother who labored tirelessly for the good of his ungekürzt. On Hearing of My Mother's Death Six Years After It Happened: A Daughter's Memoir of Mental Illness , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 324min
On Hearing of My Mother’s Death Six Years After It Happened: A Daughter’s Memoir of Mental Illness is the moving yet deeply disturbing story of a middle-aged mother and a teenaged daughter torn apart by the sudden onset of the mother’s insanity. It details the severe paranoia and absurd delusions that began to control my mother’s behavior, her fears of being murdered or assaulted or poisoned, and how her suspicions eventually fell onto those closest to her. It follows her transformation from loving parent to violent psychotic and my transformation from obedient daughter to terrified runaway. It exposes the system’s woeful failure to rescue a family in crisis and illustrates how stigma and social isolation prevented both mother and daughter from getting the help they needed. It explores the emotions with which I have struggled since I left home: my unending guilt and uneasiness over leaving, and my eternal fear and foreboding of being found. It speaks of my struggle to survive without her, of the many months of hunger and homelessness and hopelessness that were the direct result of her illness; how it nearly took away everything my mother had once wanted for me and for which I had labored so tirelessly. And it depicts the overwhelming revelatory moment when I finally learned she had died - six years before. It’s a story of survival, both my mother’s and my own. It’s a story of grief and of loss, both hers and my own. And ultimately, it’s the story that reconciles us - both the adult daughter and the mother she lost, and the young girl and the mother who was already long gone. She rests, in peace. Perhaps now I can, too. This second edition of this award-winning memoir has been revised and rewritten in response to comments from readers and now contains eight additional chapters not included in the original 2014 release. ungekürzt.
