Today on To the Best of Our Knowledge, "Protest 2.0": how open-source protesting is changing the world. First, a little theoretical overview. How exactly does social media allow someone in say, Tunis, to overthrow their government? Jim Fleming talks to Clay Shirky, author of Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing without Organizations. V for Vendetta is the film for the Internet's Anonymous movement. They're the hackers who brought down the sites of MasterCard, PayPal and Visa after they shut off donations to Wikileaks. Gregg Housh tells Steve Paulson about Anonymous. Steve wanted to know how Gregg could be the spokesperson for an anonymous organization. To the Best of Our Knowledge is produced in Madison, Wisconsin, which recently saw this new type of leaderless social-media revolution in full bloom. It was in response to Governor Scott Walker announcing his controversial "budget repair bill" that would strip the collective bargaining rights of state employees. One of the sleep-in activists at the State Capitol was writer and blogger Christie Taylor. She kept a diary of her experiences…. The Arab Spring caught a lot of people by surprise, but not a group called Global Voices. It's made up of more than 300 bloggers and translators around the world who are closely watching Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and blogs - ready to report when ordinary people become citizen journalists, as they did throughout the events of the Arab Spring. Ivan Sigal, Global Voices' Executive Director, tells Anne Strainchamps about it. All eyes have been on the Middle East for some months now. But al Qaeda has been conspicuous for its absence. Many have declared al Qaeda and other Muslim extremist groups irrelevant with regards to the Arab Spring. Irrelevant? Anne Strainchamps posed that question to Romesh Ratnesar, contributing editor-at-large at Time magazine. [Broadcast Date: May 11, 2011] Language: English. Chaos, confusion, and disintegration fall with swift, breathtaking disaster upon America! Already terrorized by a tottering, unstable world, American men and women are swept into a mad stampede when the great leaders of the nation are spirited away one by one to return as broken men, useless and inept. Here Jimmy Christopher - Operator #5 - sets forth on his most thrilling and dangerous exploit while the great brains of America surrender to madness and despair, as a leaderless people seethe in revolt against a government that is crumbling before their eyes. How can Operator #5 singlehandedly hope to prevail against that dread master of broken men? A woman screamed once...and 1,000 guests in that great Washington ballroom stood frozen with terror as the blood-mad horde of naked savages turned the place into a reeking charnel house. But that was only the beginning.... America's greatest industrial and political leaders become, overnight, gibbering maniacs while a fear-frenzied, despairing nation revolts against a crumbling, dying government! How can Operator #5, alone, hope to prevail against this dread master of broken men? They called this new threat to America's freedom the "man breaker". Is he an agent of a foreign power or a traitor burrowing through the national bowels like a termite of silent but relentless destruction? Does it matter when the country's most prominent leaders fall before his cruel tortures like spineless rag dolls? As savage riots spring up across the benighted land, Jimmy Christopher, Operator #5, takes up his pistol and rapier and undertakes a desperate manhunt for the mastermind before the nation plunges into a new dark age of doom. Into this uncontrollable political crisis plunges Jimmy Christopher - only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit and stands prepared to perish to protect his country. From the pages of Operator #5 magazine, September 1934, comes "Master of Broken Men" read ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Milton Bagby. Naples, Italy, during four fateful days in the fall of 1943. The only people left in the shattered, bombed-out city are the lost, abandoned children whose only goal is to survive another day. None could imagine that they would become fearless fighters and the unlikeliest heroes of World War II. They are the warriors immortalized in Street Boys, Lorenzo Carcaterra's exhilarating new novel, a book that exceeds even his best-selling Sleepers as a riveting listening experience. It's late September. The war in Europe is almost won. Italy is leaderless, Mussolini already arrested by anti-Fascists. The German army has evacuated the city of Naples. Adults, even entire families, have been marched off to work camps or simply sent off to their deaths. Now, the German army is moving toward Naples to finish the job. Their chilling instructions are: If the city can't belong to Hitler, it will belong to no one. No one but children. Children who have been orphaned or hidden by parents in a last, defiant gesture against the Nazis. Children, some as young as 10 years old, armed with just a handful of guns, unexploded bombs, and their own ingenuity. Children who are determined to take on the advancing enemy and save the city - or die trying. There is Vincenzo Soldari, a 16-year-old history buff who is determined to make history by leading others with courage and self-confidence; Carlo Maldini, a middle-aged drunkard desperate to redeem himself by adding his experience to the raw exuberance of the young fighters; Nunzia Maldini, his 19-year-old daughter, who helps her father regain his self-respect - and loses her heart to an American G.I.; Corporal Steve Connors, a soldier sent out on reconnaissance, then cut off from his comrades - with no choice but to aid the street boys; Colonel Rudolph Van Klaus, the proud Nazi commander shamed by his own sadistic mission; and, of course, the dozens of young boys who use their few skills and great heart to tr Language: English. As it began, so shall it end - in magic, mystery, and majesty... Magician's End Thirty years ago, Raymond E. Feist wrote his first novel, Magician, a story about an orphan boy named Pug who is thrust by a war into captivity in an alien world, only to rise from slavery to become a Master Magician. Magician introduced readers to Midkemia and the Riftwars, an epic series of battles between Good and Evil that have scarred this remarkable realm for generations. Now, after 29 books (authored and coauthored), Feist delivers the crowning achievement of his renowned best-selling career: Magician's End, the final chapter of the Chaoswar Saga and the climax of his extraordinary Riftwar Cycle. An uneasy quiet has settled upon Midkemia in the wake of a surprise invasion. But the land is far from peaceful. Leaderless, the Kingdom is on the brink of anarchy and civil war, unless Hal conDoin, Duke of Crydee, and his brothers can rally their allies to crown a new king. They must move quickly, for war has left the land vulnerable to an agency of horrific destruction not of this world. No one is safe, not even the Star Elves whose city deep in the Grey Tower Mountains has come under attack by an ancient darkness that seeks to extinguish every living thing in Midkemia. Yet the bravery of determined warriors - brothers in blood and arms - is not enough to ensure the Kingdom's preservation without the magic of the Master Sorcerer Pug. A powerful spell has trapped him, his son Magnus, and two unlikely allies in an unfamiliar realm, and they must find their separate ways home - a journey of memory and discovery that will illuminate the truth of the destiny that awaits them. But to save Midkemia - and everything he has fought for and all he cherishes - Pug will have to pay the ultimate price. A breathtaking tale of elves and men, love and hate, ambition and sacrifice, intrigue and brotherhood, war and peace, Magician's End/i ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Meagher. They say that "necessity is the mother of invention". But today, I would add that "to maintain all of our necessities, the world sorely needs and requires the greatest invention of all time - an autonomous government".  The world is currently being introduced to autonomous cars and trucks. Many millions of miles have been logged by driverless cars and trucks. Tesla has already started to drive huge semi-trailer trucks across the country without a driver. The technology for driverless cars and trucks can be easily adopted to create a leaderless or autonomous government. Autonomous cars will reduce the crashes on the roadways, while an autonomous government will reduce the crash of our civilization and our planet and our species.Today, the people of this country and this planet are forced to endure a system of making the laws that we must all obey by a bunch of old white men in expensive business suits. Even this group is tyrannized by one or two individuals who control these few to consider only solutions to problems that have been predetermined and pre-cleared by special interest groups. Half of them end up in jail, and yet this is how we create the rules of law.  But there is hope - we are now building the world's first artificial intelligence, a huge computer brain that can outthink all of these men in suits plus billions more of us on the outside. Solutions to problems can be delivered in seconds - not decades - and they will be fair and just because they will be derived from complete and total logic. Computers also cannot take bribes in their deliberation process.  This is a new type of freedom. We're all familiar with freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to bear arms. We now need the Constitution to deliver a new freedom - the freedom from aimlessness. The autonomous government will bring us the common goals of preserving our planet Earth plus the survival of our species as well as all other ungekürzt. Language: English.
