The Lion and the Cross: A Novel of Saint Patrick and Ancient Ireland , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 969min
The man who would become Ireland’s beloved patron saint confronts his destiny during the tumultuous Dark Ages in this vibrant, enthralling novel In 410 CE, arrogant 16-year-old Magonus Sucatus Patricius denounces Christianity as a religion for cowards when the Roman legions withdraw, leaving Britain vulnerable to raiders from the west. Determined to wield a sword despite being the grandson of a priest, the affluent young man is taken captive by barbarians and sold into slavery to a cruel Irish king. On a mountaintop in Eire, a shepherd strips him of his grand Roman name and calls him Padraic, marking him a man of no consequence. Set against the magnificent backdrop of ancient Ireland and based on available historical facts, Saint Patrick’s Confession, and Celtic myth, this gripping novel follows Patrick as he finds his faith while fighting to escape bondage in Eire. Friendship with a king, love for a queen, and enmity with the druids who fear his God will embroil him in a civil war in a land from which he will struggle to flee - only to be called to return. ungekürzt. The Book of Modern British Verse , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 316min
The Book of Modern British Verse, edited by William Stanley Braithwaite (1878-1962). This anthology, first published in 1919, is very much a record of its time. Many of the poems deal with the cataclysmic trauma of World War One and the emergence of a new world order after the fading of the Edwardian era. Among the authors of the 151 poems can be found the names of Rupert Brooke and Ivor Gurney, best known as war poets. As well as poets like Edward Thomas, whose stars have somewhat faded, there are also contributors who are still celebrated today, but largely for literary pursuits other than poetry, ranging from James Joyce to the mystic philosopher Evelyn Underhill. In the words of the anthologist: "This little collection is intended to present to American readers the character of contemporary British verse. The period has now definitely assumed the name of 'Georgian'. It began with John Masefield and has grown into the newer blossoming of Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, and Robert Nichols." The poets whose work is represented in this anthology are, in order of appearance: Ralph Hodgson, Willoughby Weaving, John Freeman, Osbert Sitwell, Seosamh MacCathmhaoil (Joseph Campbell), John Drinkwater, TW Earp, William H. Davies, Fredegond Shove, Harold Monro, Ford Madox Hueffer, Richard Middleton, Thomas MacDonagh, William H. Davies, Lucy Lyttelton, Gordon Bottomley, Francis Ledwidge, Hester Sainsbury, Elizabeth Rendall, Gerald Gould, Hilaire Belloc, George Rostrevor, J.Turner, Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, Richard Aldington, May Doney, James C. Welsh, John Masefield, Bernard Gilbert, Padraic Colum, Iris Tree, Lascelles Abercrombie, Anna Wickham, James Elroy Flecker, Walter de la Mare, Viola Taylor, Robert Graves, Sherard Vines, Sacheverell Sitwell, James Stephens, Edith Sitwell, Cicely Fox Smith, Eva Gore-Booth, Evelyn Underhill, Winifred M.
