Lands of Lost Borders: A Journey on the Silk Road , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 659min
Lands of Lost Borders carried me up into a state of openness and excitement I haven’t felt for years. It’s a modern classic. (Pico Iyer)A brilliant, fierce writer makes her debut with this enthralling travelogue and memoir of her journey by bicycle along the Silk Road - an illuminating and thought-provoking fusion of The Places in Between, Lab Girl, and Wild that dares us to challenge the limits we place on ourselves and the natural world. As a teenager, Kate Harris realized that the career she craved - to be an explorer, equal parts swashbuckler and metaphysician - had gone extinct. From what she could tell of the world from small-town Ontario, the likes of Marco Polo and Magellan had mapped the whole earth; there was nothing left to be discovered. Looking beyond this planet, she decided to become a scientist and go to Mars.In between studying at Oxford and MIT, Harris set off by bicycle down the fabled Silk Road with her childhood friend Mel. Pedaling mile upon mile in some of the remotest places on earth, she realized that an explorer, in any day and age, is the kind of person who refuses to live between the lines. Forget charting maps, naming peaks: What she yearned for was the feeling of soaring completely out of bounds. The farther she traveled, the closer she came to a world as wild as she felt within.Lands of Lost Borders is the chronicle of Harris’ odyssey and an exploration of the importance of breaking the boundaries we set ourselves; an examination of the stories borders tell and the restrictions they place on nature and humanity; and a meditation on the existential need to explore - the essential longing to discover what in the universe we are doing here.Like Rebecca Solnit and Pico Iyer, Kate Harris offers a travel account at once exuberant and reflective, wry and rapturous. Tom Danielson's Core Advantage (eBook, ePUB)
Tom Danielson's Core Advantage offers a simple, highly effective core strength program for cyclists. This comprehensive approach shows the 50 essential core workout exercises that will buil strength and endurance in the key core muscles for cycling-no gym membership required.Professional cyclist Tom Danielson used to have a bad back. He shifted in the saddle, never comfortable, often riding in pain. Hearing that core strength could help his back, he started doing crunches, which made matters worse. He turned to personal trainer Allison Westfahl for a new approach. Danielson and Westfahl developed all-new core exercises to build core strength specifically for cycling, curing Danielson's back problems. Better yet, Danielson found that stronger core muscles boosted his pedaling efficiency and climbing power.Using Danielson's core exercises, cyclists of all abilities will enjoy faster, pain-free riding. Cyclists will perform simple exercises using their own body weight to build strength in the low back, hips, abs, chest, and shoulders without adding unwanted bulk and without weights, machines, or a gym membership. Each Core Advantage exercise complements the motions of riding a bike so cyclists strengthen the right muscles that stabilize and support the body, improving efficiency and reducing the fatigue that can lead to overuse injuries and pain in the back, neck, and shoulders.Beginner, intermediate, and advanced training plans will help bike racers, century riders, and weekend warriors to build core strength throughout the season. Each plan features warm-up stretches and 15 core exercises grouped into workouts for injury resistance, better posture, improved stability and bike handling, endurance, and power. Westfahl explains the goal for each exercise, which Danielson models in clear photographs.Riding a bike takes more than leg strength. Now Tom Danielson's Core Advantage lays out the core strengthening routines that enable longer, faster rides.- Shop: buecher

Collision
Daniel Heagney's debut album 'Collision' provides the listener with a wide variety of solo percussion music. It includes the world premiere recordings of Peter Klatzow's 'Etudes for Solo Marimba' and Brett William Dietz's epic multiple percussion solo 'Nocturne'. The Album is rounded out with Rodney Sharman's beautiful vibraphone solo 'Apollo's Touch' and Steven Mackey's famous marimba work 'See Ya Thursday'. Review of Collision from the Percussive Arts Society September issue of Percussive Notes: It is always exciting to hear a young performer who is able to maneuver easily between a variety of styles and instruments with a unique maturity that is appreciated. Containing three works for keyboard percussion and one for multiple percussion, Daniel Heagney has produced a CD that should be recommended listening for those interested in both new repertoire and sensitive interpretation across a variety of percussion instruments. Composed for two, three, and four mallets, Peter Klatzow's "Etudes for Marimba" is a six-movement work that explores contrasting musical ideas and technical concepts on the instrument. These concepts range from the application of broken octaves to advanced polyrhythms. Commissioned by Heagney, each short movement is beautifully composed and performed. I hope this becomes a standard work on graduate student and professional marimba recitals. Rodney Sharman's "Apollo's Touch" is a quiet and intimate work for solo vibraphone. Seventeen minutes in length, it is the longest selection on the CD. Meandering freely between tonality and atonality, it produces a trancelike listening experience. While some of the pedaling of longer melodic lines gets a little blurry, Heagney's attention to detail renders a sensitive and affective performance. Steven Mackey's "See Ya Thursday" serves as a showcase for both the performer's technical and musical skill. Heagney displays this as the somewhat quirky musical lines are presented with clarity and intrigue. Scored for a variety of percussion instruments (bongos, tambourine, bass drum, cowbells, wind chimes, and tubular bells) and voice (percussion-like bursts of yelling), Brett Dietz's "Nocturne" is the most compelling work on the CD. The dialogue between various timbres almost gives the impression of a percussion ensemble piece. The introduction, disappearance, and subsequent reappearance of sonic material throughout clearly delineate the form and keeps the listener engaged. Heagney's strength as an interpreter is his sensitivity and patience in shaping each line, melodic or rhythmic, in a way that keeps the listener from being either bored or overwhelmed. -Jason Baker.- Shop: odax

J.S. Bach Goldberg Variations on Harpsichord & Pia
'I find Gilmson's performances on both instruments executed with flawless technical grasp, and with interpretive acumen that's thoroughly captivating and rewarding... I can now say that Sophia Gilmson has gone where no one has gone before, and that if you have the slightest interest in Bach's Goldberg Variations, it is imperative that you acquire this set... Sophia Gilmson and producer Andy Murphy, working in concert with a fantastic production team, have achieved something quite extraordinary here.' Fanfare '....one of the most refreshing and thought-provoking performances this season." Austin-American Statesman One of the world's most magnificent musical creations, Bach's Goldberg Variations was written for two-manual harpsichord. There are numerous recordings of this piece performed by harpsichordists and pianists. However, listeners have had no opportunities to hear side-by-side performances on both instruments by the same performer. ? For a long time I entertained the idea of performing the work on both instruments during the same concert. In 2001, I had the rare opportunity to make my dream come true. Two complete performances of the Goldberg Variations -- one on harpsichord and another on piano, preceded by a lecture -- were presented to an overflowing house at Jessen Auditorium, University of Texas at Austin, where I teach. The response from the community, including my colleagues, was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. I was encouraged repeatedly to share this program with broader audiences, which brought me to a variety of stages in the USA and Europe. ? This program was hailed as 'one of the most refreshing and thought-provoking performances of this season' (Austin American-Statesman, Michael Huebner) and earned the prestigious Mount Everest Award given by the Austin Critics Table. MIchael Barnes, chief arts critic of the Austin American-Statesman at the time, ranked it as one of the top 10 arts events of 2001, calling it 'unforgettable'. ? ? Later I made a studio recording I am offering to your attention now. ? The set of two CDs includes two complete performances, one on harpsichord and another on piano. ? This DVD contains an introductory talk, a demonstration of selected variations on harpsichord and piano side by side, and two complete performances on each instrument accompanied by a display of the score. It addresses the history of this piece's creation, the legend attached to it, and an analysis of it's architecture. It also allows for a comparison of the expressiveness of both harpsichord and a piano as played by one performer. The rhythmical energy and linear clarity of the harpsichord is contrasted with the lyrical warmth and dynamic flexibility of the modern piano, allowing new insights into the most sensitive issues regarding interpretation of Bach's keyboard music, such as the intricacies of counterpoint, dynamics, articulation, pedaling, and tempi. ?? ? ?Performing this piece on harpsichord built as a replica of those typical for Baroque time allows a priceless glimpse into Bach's world. How would he play it? How would he shape the phrases on an instrument that does not respond to dynamics we are so used to on the piano? How would he employ articulation combining various degrees of legato and non legato for clarity and expressiveness? How would he use two keyboards and various registers for balance and colors? The harpsichord itself leads to many answers.?? ? Bringing this music to modern piano sheds new life to the interpretive possibilities. To what degree will I use dynamics and pedaling? How will I utilize longer decay of the sound for the benefits of counterpoint? ? I found these challenges marvelously stimulating. Aiming for the best possible musical result, regardless of the instrument, taught me to be fully aware of the endless possibilities this music offers. ? I hope that listeners will not compare the two performances to decide which instrument is 'better'. It is my desire to provide a unique opportunity to explore the expressiveness of each instrument as played by one performer.- Shop: odax

She was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, and has three sons, and four granddaughters. She enjoys family, music, travel, gardening, reading, cooking, walking, especially in the mountains, people. NOTES Pebbles in the Pond Music can be but a small speck in the scheme of things, but still make a profound influence heard 'round the world. The exceptional characteristic about classical music is there is no right or wrong way to listen to it, and no one dictates what you should hear. It depends on what is in your life to relate to it. That is the correct interpretation for you. As Charlie Parker said: "Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Of course, it is a little like eating peanuts, the more you try it, the more you enjoy it. Reflections on the Water has been one of my favorite pieces to play for many years, and audiences have always loved it. It invites us to imagine all kinds of water-fountains, pools, great oceans, sprays with the sun glistening, and a trip back to childhood, throwing pebbles in the pond to watch the ripples grow in outward, in ever enlarging circles. Debussy's impressionistic sounds conjure images similar to the paintings of Renoir, Manet, and Monet. He was influenced by American jazz, and his music had a profound influence on all composers after him. The music of Scarlatti was such fun to work on after doing Chopin and Gerswhin, just like a refreshing dip in a pool, after the steamy summer day. Scarlatti's sound reflects the cool blue of the Mediterranean, and simple joys of life. Unique usage of dissonance, and remarkably original sonorities, deep expressive range, from humor and wit to passions and despair. The Sonata in F Minor represents one of Scarlatti's more thoughtful, quiet pieces which constantly seems to reach upward, striving for an unknown sublime entity only the listener can understand for himself. Chopin wrote music that changed the way the world wrote music, heard music, and performed music. Considering he found the piano complete for the expression of his creative spirit, pianists revel in his music, and audiences have responded to that love. It was not always so. His editors told him, his music was "too difficult," and people couldn't read it. Indeed, if one approaches Chopin's music with a mind set on a classical style, it is pretty dreadful! And so, we change gears, and enter into the Romantic mode, where we have lyrical phrases, influenced by Chopin's admiration of Bach's music, love of the opera, flowing accompaniments, full use of the piano including pedaling which becomes an art in itself, and importantly, we must enter into the heart and mind of the composer to communicate his feelings to the listeners. Many find Chopin at his best in his small pieces, and so I have chosen an unusual Nocturne-one which has a surprise ending, a Mazurka not too often heard, and the lovely Etude in E Major, which is said to be a melody Chopin claimed to be his best, along with the Waltz in G Flat. The Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue by Bach is a piece sometimes avoided by performers and teachers, because it takes a good deal of research to come up with what the performer believes is a credible version. I used three editions, listened to several recordings, and referred to some notes from Evelyn Mitchell, a fine teacher who had been a child prodigy and studied with Maurice Rosenthal. The Fantasy progresses through chromatic chords and cadenza-like runs which are a real trip! Going back to the Urtext edition, it is easier to understand the structure which Bach uses to create his improvisations. The Fugue begins with a soft, noble subject in the right hand and progresses relentlessly to a majestic finale with octaves using the whole keyboard. . George Gershwin, one of America's greatest composers, died at the age of 39. He was a talented pianist, who made his way on Tin Pan Alley at the age of 15. He could sight read anything put in front of him, and transpose it, and then improvise on it. He had large hands and much of his music contains intervals of 10ths and 12ths. These three Preludes were written to bring the syncopation and craggy rhythms and lyrical blues of jazz to the concert stage and reach "serious" audiences. "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." (Red Auerbach (1812 - 1882) and quoted again by Pat Conroy -and now, by me. It is my deepest wish that those who hear this music experience some of what I felt in making this CD -no worries, no fears-I was invincible. I felt connected -to the past and the present. Noble Heart: Music of Johannes Brahms
Called the greatest contrapuntist after Bach and the greatest architect after Beethoven, Brahms adopted the harmonic language of the 19th century, but his feet were planted firmly within the Classical tradition. His second piano Sonata is an early, passionate work, written with his heart on his sleeve, but reveals what a virtuoso pianist he must have been. His early Scherzo seems to be modeled on Chopin's Second Scherzo. But it is in his intimate set of piano pieces of Op. 76, that Brahms exposes the many dark layers of his deep and complex soul. Each one is a miniature gem. His Two Rhapsodies of Op. 79 have bravura and boldness and the two Waltzes (the encores of this recital) reveal his popular roots. Remember, as a young fellow, Brahms earned extra money playing in the brothels of Hamburg. A wonderful introduction to this noble musician! "Nissman's unpredictable programming makes you feel as though you are encountering a well-known classic like Brahms for the first time. Here Nissman gives us the best of both worlds. Her clarity shows the rhythmic ingenuity while her pedaling and singing tone make the melodic flow all sound so natural and inevitable." Virtuoso of the Cembalo
The cembalo.... This extraordinary musical string percussion instrument is encountered at various peoples under different names, beginning with the 16th century and soon became the favourite instrument of the Hungarian bards. And it is not by chance that in the second part of the 19th century, it was Joszef von Schunda, a Hungarian, who improved this instrument. He enlarged it's diapason and found an adequate way of tuning and pedaling, and thus, enabling it's unique technical performance possibilities, turning the cembalo into a grand instrument for concerts. This invention stimulated the appearance of valuable instrumentalists in many countries of the world, who besides the traditional music also performed pieces of the universal music. Born in 1980, on December 7, Alexander, a precocious talent, started studying piano at the music school "V. Poleacov", two years later being accepted at the "Ciprian Porumbescu" Music High-School, in the cembalo class of Prof. I. Grosu, and then in the class of Prof. V. Luta. He studied at the State University of Art, the cembalo class of Ph.D. candidate V. Sirbu and V.Craciun - a good choice. The level of performance achieved by the young musician, during a relatively short time, is simply to be envied. From the age of 12 years, he won many valuable awards at various national and international contests. Among these - the 1st Prize at the International Festival of Traditional Music 'Constantin Brailoiu' (Brashov, Romania, 1995), Golden Medal at the 1st Delphic Games (Moscow, Russia, 2000) - a total of 7 1st prizes at 7 contests. At the same age, he began performing with the most prestigious professional orchestras of the Republic of Moldova such as the ensembles of traditional dance music "Joc" and "Lautarii". Alexander had solo recitals at the halls of National Philharmonic and Organ Hall of Moldova, as well as Romania, Austria, Russia, Germany, Belarus, Israel, France, Spain, Switzerland and others. He masters an impetuous technique of performing and a rare sound of finesse, putting his heart and soul in everything that he does, and still controlling his emotions to be in full concordance with the musical message to be delivered to the audience. He is always colorable and convincing, conquering the audience with expressiveness, profoundness of the artistic idea, manner of performance, characteristic to the great performers. His repertoire is rich and various, including traditional, folk, pre-classical and classical music up to the creations of the composers of the 20th century. This CD represents a collection of the most outstanding works created by the well-known composers of the music world, in transcript for cembalo and performed by Alexander Shura. He invites you to share with him the happiness of grasping the inner significance of the marvelous and divine miracle - Her Majesty, The Music.
