Long, long ago the world was a place of wizards, and castles, and knights. There were monsters and things with featherless wings, and other such horrible sights. But the people were happy, and safe when they slept (since they knew everything was alright); for the big, nor the small, not a creature would call on a house thanks to Bumpen the Knight! As the first story in a series of tales, this volume introduces readers to Bumpen the Knight, a fearless defender of children and vanquisher of monsters large and small. We also meet Wit, a reformed monster whose fate is bound by an unforeseen turn of circumstance to that of the tiny knight's. Speaking in brilliant rhyme, Wit serves as the narrator for much of the story, explaining the history of how their unlikely partnership came to be. This audiobook focuses around a central theme, illustrating that even the best of intentions can have unintended consequences. Alternating between prose and rhymed verse, this story has something to offer for readers of all ages. Written with the express purpose of expanding a child's vocabulary, as well as fostering a love of literature, this audiobook is well-tailored for listening! ungekürzt. Language: English. Considered one of Chaucer’s finest poems, second only to The Canterbury Tales in richness and depth, Troilus and Cressida is a tragic love story set against the background of the siege of Troy by the Greeks. Written in the 1380s, it presents Troilus, son of Priam and younger brother of Hector, as a Trojan warrior of renown who sees, and falls deeply in love with, the beautiful Cressida. Cressida is the daughter of Calchas, a Trojan priest and seer who, having divined the eventual fall of Troy, has deserted to Agamemnon’s camp, leaving his daughter in the besieged city. With the help of Pander, friend to Troilus and uncle to Cressida, the young couple meet and merge - but with unhappy consequences. Chaucer’s long poem is cast in seven-line rhymed stanzas and is eased out of Middle English to be presented here in a lively modern verse translation by George Philip Krapp, who has retained not only the structure but its spirit. Emotions run high, the love is intense, the story unfolds with a dramatic urgency that draws the listener ever onwards; yet Chaucer is Chaucer, and there are times when a deft line, a light insinuation, suggests the smile, the benevolence and the immediacy of the author of The Canterbury Tales. Troilus and Cressida, though often overshadowed by the Tales and time (and even Shakespeare, who took up the story) is a monument in its own right in the canon of English literature. Once listened to it will never be forgotten. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jonathan Keeble. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/dhrm/000210/bk_dhrm_000210_sample.mp3. Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886.The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828-29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself.Goethe finished writing Faust Part Two in 1831; it was published posthumously the following year. In contrast to Faust Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years.Among the most significant works Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "Faust", "The Sorrows of Young Werther", "Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship", "Elective Affinities", "Prometheus", "Zur Farbenlehre", "Italienische Reise", West-östlicher Divan" and many more. A modernization by A. S. Kline Narrated by Jack Wynters Written in the Middle English of the late 14th century, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight survives in a single manuscript which also contains three religious poems including "Pearl", written it seems by the same author, who is therefore referred to as The Pearl Poet. The poem tells the story of an incident at the court of King Arthur, involving Sir Gawain’s acceptance of a challenge from the mysterious Green Knight, and leading to a test of his chivalry and courage. The poem is a lively, atmospheric, and cleverly-paced example of a quest tale, from which the hero emerges chastened and wiser, and contains an interesting mix of Celtic, French, and English motifs. There are many and varied interpretations of the themes and symbols contained in the story, and echoes are found in many other folklore tales and legends. About the Author:  The Pearl Poet appears to have been a 14th-century contemporary of Chaucer, and the dialect in which the poem is written suggests an origin in the English West Midlands. The poem is written in an alliterative style, in variable length stanzas, their lines containing two pairs of stressed syllables, and each stanza ending in a rhyming quatrain. It is seen as an example of work produced during the Alliterative Revival of the period, but by combining alliteration and rhyme leads forward to the flexible rhymed and unrhymed verse of later times. Various attempts have been made to identify the Pearl Poet with a historical personage but no candidate has been generally accepted. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jack Wynters. Macy"The Great Henry McBride", narrated by Peter DinklageSeuss scholar/collector Charles D. Cohen has hunted down seven rarely seen stories by Dr. Seuss. Originally published in magazines between 1950 and 1951, they include "The Rabbit, the Bear, and the Zinniga-Zanniga" (about a rabbit who is saved from a bear with a single eyelash!); "Gustav the Goldfish" (an early, rhymed version of the Beginner Book A Fish Out of Water); "Tadd and Todd" (a tale passed down via photocopy to generations of twins); "Steak for Supper" (about fantastic creatures who follow a boy home in anticipation of a steak dinner); "The Bippolo Seed" (in which a scheming feline leads an innocent duck to make a bad decision); "The Strange Shirt Spot" (the inspiration for the bathtub-ring scene in The Cat in the Hat Comes Back); and "The Great Henry McBride" (about a boy whose far-flung career fantasies are only bested by those of the real Dr. Seuss himself).  In an introduction to the collection, Cohen explains the significance these seven stories have, not only as lost treasures, but as transitional stories in Dr. Seuss's career. This is a collection of stories that no Seuss fan (whether scholar or second-grader) will want to miss! ungekürzt. Language: English.
