Williwaw! , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 346min
Growing up in a remote part of Alaska, Ivan and September Crane know that autumn is an unpredictable season - days of clear blue skies can give way to fierce, sudden storms in a blink. They know the trouble signs: changes in the wind, the temperature, or even the color of the dawn. But somehow, this time, left alone when their fisherman father is delayed at sea, even their keen sense of their surroundings and the lessons they've been taught fail them. So does their common sense. Though their dad warned them not to hook up their video game to the short-wave radio batteries and ordered them to stay off moody Bag Bay in their skiff, they wind up doing both. With their radio - their only link to the outside world and the town across Bag Bay - fried and useless, they've got to sneak into town to have it repaired.Soon brother and sister are caught up in a whirlpool of complications from which they can't escape. And unbeknownst to them, heading viciously and mercilessly their way is something they fear more than anything else on Bag Bay: a williwaw, a violent and unbending storm, the kind that took their mother's life years before. ungekürzt. The Devil and Sherlock Holmes: Tales of Murder, Madness, and Obsession , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 782min
Acclaimed New Yorker writer and author of the breakout debut best seller The Lost City of Z, David Grann offers a collection of spellbinding narrative journalism. Whether hes reporting on the infiltration of the murderous Aryan Brotherhood into the U.S. prison system, tracking down a chameleon con artist in Europe, or riding in a cyclone-tossed skiff with a scientist hunting the elusive giant squid, David Grann revels in telling stories that explore the nature of obsession and that piece together true and unforgettable mysteries. Each of the dozen stories in this collection reveals a hidden and often dangerous world and, like Into Thin Air and The Orchid Thief, pivots around the gravitational pull of obsession and the captivating personalities of those caught in its grip. There is the world's foremost expert on Sherlock Holmes who is found dead in mysterious circumstances; an arson sleuth trying to prove that a man about to be executed is innocent; and sandhogs racing to complete the brutally dangerous job of building New York City's water tunnels before the old system collapses. Throughout, Grann's hypnotic accounts display the power and often the willful perversityof the human spirit. Compulsively listenable, The Devil and Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant mosaic of ambition, madness, passion, and folly. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Deakins. Gladesmen: Gator Hunters, Moonshiners, and Skiffers: Florida History and Culture , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 335min
Few people today can claim a living memory of Florida's frontier Everglades. Glen Simmons, who has hunted alligators, camped on hammock-covered islands, and poled his skiff through the mangrove swamps of the glades since the 1920s, is one who can. Together with Laura Ogden, he tells the story of backcountry life in the southern Everglades from his youth until the establishment of the Everglades National Park in 1947. During the economic bust of the late 20s, when many natives turned to the land to survive, Simmons began accompanying older local men into Everglades backcountry, the inhospitable prairie of soft muck and mosquitoes, of outlaws and moonshiners, that rings the southern part of the state. As Simmons recalls life in this community with humor and nostalgia, he also documents the forgotten lifestyles of south Florida gladesmen. By necessity, they understood the natural features of the Everglades ecosystem. They observed the seasonal fluctuations of wildlife, fire, and water levels. Their knowledge of the mostly unmapped labyrinth of grassy water enabled them to serve as guides for visiting naturalists and scientists. Simmons reconstructs this world, providing not only fascinating stories of individual personalities, places, and events, but an account that is accurate, both scientifically and historically, of one of the least known and longest surviving portions of the American frontier. The book is published by University Press of Florida. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: James R. Marshall. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/002116/bk_acx0_002116_sample.mp3. For fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Emma Straub comes an emotionally gripping novel about a woman who returns to her hometown in coastal Maine and finds herself pondering the age-old question of what could have been. Growing up in Little Harbor, Maine, the daughter of a widowed lobsterman, Eliza Barnes could haul a trap and row a skiff with the best of them. But she always knew she'd leave that life behind. Now that she's married, with two kids and a cushy front-row seat to suburban country club gossip in an affluent Massachusetts town, she feels adrift. When her father injures himself in a boating accident, Eliza pushes the pause button on her own life to come to his aid. But when she arrives in Maine, she discovers her father's situation is direr than he let on. Eliza's homecoming is further complicated by the reemergence of her first love - and memories of their shared secret. Then Eliza meets Mary Brown, a 17-year-old local who is at her own crossroads, and Eliza can't help but wonder what her life would have been like if she'd stayed. Filled with humor, insight, summer cocktails, and gorgeous sunsets, The Captain's Daughter is a compassionate novel about the life-changing choices we make and the consequences we face in their aftermath. ungekürzt. Chesapeake Gold: Man and Oyster on the Bay , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 330min
The figure of an old man poling a skiff toward shore against the evening light engaged Susan Brait to learn about Chesapeake Bay, and it is that image which opens this her book on the oystermen of the Bay and the sapping of their traditional life, and even the bounty of the Bay itself, by the demands of American society. With directness and poetic economy Brait takes the listener into the life of the Bay and into the complex relationships that affect oysters and those who make their living from them. Her account weaves easily from the daily work of oystermen to the natural forces that have shaped the Bay, from the experimental culture of oysters by marine biologists to the plans of businessmen who expect to grow and harvest the mollusks on privately owned reefs, from efforts to legislate control of the Bay and its resources to the upper reaches of the Susquehanna River where increasing pollution of the Bay originates from agricultural practices of the Amish and other farmers. These and other disparate elements are gracefully woven into a seamless web that represents the complex wholeness of the Bay itself. Chesapeake Gold is a sensitive portrayal of people and their place, but it is also more. The oystermen and their efforts to maintain their traditional life become a figure for our society's struggle to find an ethic that will serve both man and the natural world that man is apart from and a part of. ungekürzt. Three Men in a Boat: To Say Nothing of the Dog , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 358min
Three Men in a Boat was intended to be a serious travel guide. It failed dismally in this respect but succeeded in becoming an hilarious account of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The three men were based on the author and two of his friends. The holiday was a typical boating holiday of its time, carried out on what was known as a Thames camping skiff. The dog, Montmorency, however, was entirely fictional, but, as Jerome remarked, 'had much of me in it'. The book was denounced as 'vulgar' by the literary establishment, but it was hugely popular amongst the 'clerking classes' who yearned to be 'free from that fretful haste, that vehement striving that is every day becoming more and more the bane of 19th century life'. It has coined one of the great quotes about the pressures of the modern working life - 'I like work. It fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours'. Such was the story's success that Jerome reunited his heroes for a cycling tour in Europe, entitled Three Men on the Bummel. And perhaps the book's original purpose as a travel guide did not fail entirely; its influence was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up 50 percent in the year following its publication, and it contributed significantly to the Thames becoming the major tourist attraction that it now is. The journey along the Thames has been re-created many times, most recently for British television in 1975 by Tim Curry, Michael Palin and Stephen Moore and, in 2005, by comedians Griff Rhys Jones, Dara O'Briain, Rory McGrath and a very nervous dog called Loli. ungekürzt.
