When you meet him, you might not notice at first, but after a couple of minutes, it becomes apparent. He’s not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. In Billy’s mind, he’s a superhero: a righter of wrongs, a saver of souls, and that’s where it all goes wrong. At the bus stop, he meets and talks with people as he goes to work, and they all look at Billy a different way.Discover Billy's story through the minds of his observers - at times, darkly funny and poignant; at times, full of stereotypical prejudice. ungekürzt. The Raven: Dramatic Reading of the Gothic Classic plus Special Commentary, Hörbuch, Digital, 19min
In this wholly original reading/performance of the immortal Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem, actor/performer Bill Mills goes beyond the stereotypical rhythmic rendition, intoned in a sepulchral voice, and instead presents Poe's words as the increasingly deranged dialogue of a man with a visitant he comes to see as an omen. It is an omen that neither in this life or the next shall he possess the one woman he loves beyond all reason. Produced in honor of the anniversary of the death of this legendary author and poet, the performance is enhanced with evocative music and sound effects and is preceded by an introductory tribute and Poe mini-biography written by producer and performer Bill Mills. The Devil's Pool , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 242min
The Devil's Pool is George Sand's most popular novella. Set in rural France, the narrative explores relations between the sexes, the power of fantasy in human life and the plight of the underprivileged. Two of the main characters are Father Maurice and his son-in-law Germain, who is considering marriage again after the death of his wife. His father-in-law organises a meeting with the rich widow, Catherine Leonard, but he finds her vain and haughty and much in demand. He seeks out the company of Marie, a shepherdess from his own village, who would prefer a younger husband. Considered a classic of French rural literature, The Devil's Pool challenges the simplistic and stereotypical perceptions of countryside folks, giving a more interesting portrayal of people living in rural environments. ungekürzt. But the community's collective and radical act of forgiveness - the loving and compassionate response to the shooter and his family - gives us insights into who the Amish truly are and how they live their faith. In Praise of Women's Bodies , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 16min
It's a truism, for instance, that a few clothes are more shocking than none. But for women especially, bras, panties, bathing suits, and other stereotypical gear are visual reminders of a commercial, idealized feminine image that our real and diverse female bodies can't possibly fit. Without those visual references, however, each individual woman's body can be accepted on its own terms. We stop being comparatives. We begin to be unique. After spending a few days at a spa in the company of 90 or so women, Gloria Steinem wrote In Praise of Women's Bodies, a short but powerful essay that's part ode and part treatise and fully in awe of the female form, in all its unique variety. In Praise of Women's Bodies was originally published in Ms., April 1982. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Marianne Fraulo. Women with Attention Deficit Disorder: Embrace Your Differences and Transform Your Life , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 771min
Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they're not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male. Sari Solden's groundbreaking study reveals that ADHD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADHD. Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options, and uses real-life case histories to examine the special challenges women with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) face, such as the shame of not fulfilling societal expectations. Included is a brand-new chapter on friendship for women with ADHD. Three empowering steps - restructuring one's life, renegotiating relationships, and redefining self-image - help women take control of their lives and enjoy success on their own terms. ungekürzt. Jewish Foreign Trade Officials on Trial (eBook, ePUB)
This book deals with six trials, conducted by the Romanian state against Jewish key officials employed in state-owned import-export companies between 1950 and 1960. It begins with a presentation of the political realities of Romania following the Communist Party's rise to power, in particular those regarding its relationship with Romania's Jews and Gheorghiu-Dej's policy of National Communism. Rozenberg describes the criminal procedure used in the staged economic trials follows and then examines this procedure based on the legal system of the period, as exemplified by the six analyzed trials. The Românoexport Jewish officials' trial is analyzed in depth, as the case study of the whole book. This book concludes by bringing to light two phenomena that dissipate some mystique surrounding the events: first, the state's practice of using its legal system as a means of oppressing the population; and second, the stereotypical image of "The Jew" which the regime in Romania developed. Despite its supposed anti-religiosity, it held on to centuries-old prejudices against Jews as pariahs, with supposed allegiance to foreign elements preferred over their surrounding society, even to the point of betraying and exploiting their own country.- Shop: buecher
