The inky black room and the horrible smells left little doubt this was a dungeon; a wretched hell intended to defeat the spirit and humanity of those it confined. The occupants were children, thrust into the hell they now faced through no act of their own, but by the depraved and morally bankrupt men and women who sold their lives and young bodies to fulfill their own greed. The door cracked open ever so slightly. Into the blackness, a wretch of a man crept. The dim, back-light of the outside hallway showed his skinny, almost bald figure as if it were in a spotlight. His torn, ragged clothes hung on a dirty, pox-scarred body. The rope holding up his bloomer-like pants was untied. His almost toothless, evil grin screamed his intentions. Each child shrank in fear from the sight before them. What had they ever done to deserve this nightmare? Did God hate them this much? Their fears were not sanctioned by governments, but by a depraved humanity. Members of SEAL Team One quietly entered the building after eliminating the feeble resistance of a few untrained guards. If discovered, it meant the SEALS caused all out war between two nations not yet at war, for this was an armed invasion. These are the human stories; stories of the love of fellow man. Stories not found in the hate-spewing news. Stories instead revealed from downgraded, classified files and told here in The Worth of Souls. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steve Sexson. For sure - this is the cancer book for rednecks! Only someone who survived boot camp would even understand. Twenty-six years of brain cancer makes me infinitely qualified to speak on survival. I hope the audible gives it justice. The published lead in says it all:In an unprecedented format, the Guerilla Guide to Brain Tumors is written in a format that combines the layout of the For Dummies series with a drill-Sargent's attitude. This is a book of war...nothing warm, and fuzzy, or socially acceptable here, and nothing about "Dying with Dignity". Just what it takes to win. And win you will, complete with a trail of wreckage behind you. It's a book for the patient, not the caregiver. The Guerilla Guide to Brain Tumors is a book that will take you out of the "Grovel and Wretch" mode and into the "Command and Dominate" mode with the following factions of our society:The medical establishmentThe social services establishmentChurch, friends, and family, and most importantly...yourselfNo punches are pulled here. Prepare to be shocked, experience uncontrollable bursts of laughter, learn gut-turning remedies, gain the motivation, and grit to dump friends, and family, intimidate social services employees, access top medical care using the most unethical tactics...and the list goes on.If you want to die in peace, listen to another book. If you want to live in pain this book not only shows you how to manage pain - but use it. Some people can take a punch while others would rather fold and die with a smile on their face, but then again - dead people don't win wars. Only the living count. ungekürzt. Language: English. Vathek, ninth Caliph of the race of the Abassides, was the son of Motassem, and the grandson of Haroun Al Raschid. From an early accession to the throne, and the talents he possessed to adorn it, his subjects were induced to expect that his reign would be long and happy. His figure was pleasing and majestic; but when he was angry one of his eyes became so terrible that no person could bear to behold it, and the wretch upon whom it was fixed instantly fell backward, and sometimes expired. For fear, however, of depopulating his dominions and making his palace desolate he but rarely gave way to his anger. Being much addicted to women and the pleasures of the table, he sought by his affability to procure agreeable companions; and he succeeded the better as his generosity was unbounded, and his indulgences unrestrained, for he was by no means scrupulous, nor did he think with the Caliph Omar Ben Abdalaziz that it was necessary to make a hell of this world to enjoy Paradise in the next. He surpassed in magnificence all his predecessors. The palace of Alkoremmi, which his father Motassem had erected on the hill of Pied Horses, and which commanded the whole city of Samarah, was in his idea far too scanty; he added therefore five wings, or rather other palaces, which he destined for the particular gratification of each of his senses. In the first of these were tables continually covered with the most exquisite dainties, which were supplied both by night and by day, according to their constant consumption, whilst the most delicious wines and the choicest cordials flowed forth from a hundred fountains that were never exhausted. This palace was called “The Eternal or Unsatiating Banquet”. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tony Parton. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/197919/bk_acx0_197919_sample.mp3. Money is the key to happiness. Work hard, play hard. Look out for number one. Popular culture is full of phrases like these, telling us the best way to live, the right things to buy, the right body shape to have, the right people to hang out with. These messages are everywhere we look, 24 hours a day. But what if there was another way to live? What if we chose to live differently: to stand against injustice, to live life for more than just ourselves, to dare to be unpopular? Guvna B is rebelling against the status quo, and he's calling you to join him. It's time to flip the script, to demonstrate another way to live, to find freedom in going against the grain. It's time for unpopular culture to take the stage. Guvna B is a double MOBO award-winning grime/rap artist from London. He became the first rapper in UK history to top the Official Christian & Gospel charts. He holds mainstream records, too, with his album Secret World being the highest selling 'clean' rap album in 2015. As well as sharing stages with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Wretch 32, Kirk Franklin and Lecrae, his story has been covered by the BBC, Sky News, and Channel 4. He has worked with artists such as Matt Redman, Hillsong Music, Nick Brewer, Destiny's Child's Michelle Williams and Keisha Buchanan. In creating output, the business & journalism graduate draws from his faith, personal experiences and observations made while living in and around the gritty and fast-paced streets of London. Guvna B, an avid West Ham fan, hopes to inspire young people to reach their full God-given potential. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Guvna B. Toni Tennille: A Memoir is an okay title for the Alabama native’s life story, but once you read it to the end, you might agree with me that "Toni Tennille: Happy at Last" is more fitting. I cannot deny that I had low expectations as I began reading the autobiography of this singer who I always adored as a teen and held on to over the decades as a guilty pop pleasure. The glamour, the celebrity friends, parties, etc. - ho-hum, we’ve certainly heard it all before. But trust me, you haven’t heard this story. If, like me, you are old enough to remember The Captain and Tennille as a top of the charts recording and touring sensation, you’ll remember Toni Tennile’s soaring vocals, her Southern charm, and her big-as-all-outdoors smile. As for The Captain - Daryl Dragon, the former keyboardist for The Beach Boys - what you’ll recall of him was that he rarely spoke while glowering at his wife and everyone else most of the rest of the time. He always wore a hat, eventually hiding behind sunglasses, too. I spent a lifetime thinking it was an act. Toni Tennille spent a lifetime wishing it was an act. Turns out, The Captain was a miserable wretch of a human being and spent decades treating his wife like crap. Reading Toni Tennille: A Memoir is a soul-crushing experience; turning each page you’ll find yourself screaming, “Toni! Get away from that bastard!” But as anyone who has ever suffered emotional abuse at the hands of a spouse knows, it’s not always easy to make a clean break. I’m glad I read Toni Tennile: A Memoir; I’m even happier to know that the subject of the book is finally free. Key interview moments: 4:40 - Toni Tennille describes her rough road with former husband Daryl Dragon - The Captain in The Captain and Tennille - but refuses to blame him or play the victim. Instead she blames his father, Academy Award-winning composer Carmen Dragon. 23:45 - Why has Toni Tennille dedicated “Muskrat Love” to Language: English. Narrator: Bob Andelman, Toni Tennille. Dragons aren’t supposed to be real.Max.I mean, I should be in jail right now instead of playing Indiana Jones in the Amazon. Life is strange. I get it. But there’s a difference between a lucky break evading the cops and...dragons. With wings and fire and vows of vengeance for stealing their treasure.I’m aware I don’t come off great here. But someone’s gotta look out for number one. And the money I could make here is life-changing cash. It took me too long to realize Jinnos is more than just eye candy and a freak-show exhibit. He’s lived centuries. Seen and done things I can’t imagine. Maybe the last of his kind. He looked past the thief to a better me I had no clue existed. I can live with being too late to earn his forgiveness, as long as I’m not too late to save him. But does it still count as saving the day, when you’re the only reason anyone needs saving?Jinnos.Humans have only gotten more exasperating since I last left the rainforest. Take the wretch who stole from me. Max shows no remorse when confronted with his crimes. Only physical threats make an impact. But then he saves me, when I’m near death and he’s nearly off the hook. Those are terrible self-preservation instincts.Or there’s the sex. Because somewhere between hunting him and hiring him to be my guide to the outside world, I started bedding the brat. Venting my frustrations on him, leaving painful souvenirs of our passionate encounters. It’s as though he’s punishing himself as much as I’m punishing him.Every morning I plan to be rid of him, convinced he’ll be my ruin. Every night I grip him tighter, marking him as mine, a replacement for the treasure I’ve long since forgotten. There’s something he’s not telling me, despite my heart whispering to give him the benefit of the doubt. And I have no answers for any of it, least of all when he asks what’s so special about him. Some things you just know to be true, even when you can’t e ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Joseph Bader. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/143777/bk_acx0_143777_sample.mp3.
