The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 391min
Many people know Benjamin Franklin as one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, but not many people understand exactly what the famed inventor and politician contributed to society. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is a compilation of some of the great events from the man's life that have made him an American legend. Franklin began his writing in England, continued in France, and last wrote in America, just a few years before his death, never having an opportunity to finish. He writes about his childhood and young adult life, from being the 15th born of 17 siblings and being destined for entering the priesthood, to becoming a famous inventor, postman, and politician. Franklin discusses how his love and interest in reading and writing inspired him to discontinue his priesthood education and apprentice under his brother until they became estranged, and eventually move to Philadelphia where he befriended several political figures and traveled to England to work as a printer. Upon returning to America in 1726, Franklin invented the lightning rod, got married, and became a postmaster among many other trades that benefited him in eventually being a key asset in organizing the war effort in the French-American War. His life and contributions have made him one of the most famous and recognized founding fathers of the United States. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Alastair Cameron. Touched: The Untouched Series, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 605min
Touched, the sequel to the debut novel Untouched, continues with the emotionally provocative journey of Aria Cason and Aiden Wyatt. Aria had meticulously constructed her world - both in the boardroom and in the bedroom. Her life was exactly as she wanted it and everything made sense, before Aiden. After Aiden was an entirely different story. Aiden's disarming and unrelenting allure eventually stripped Aria of her protective shield allowing Aiden emotional and sexual access that she'd considered forbidden to any man. Aiden forced emotions to the surface that Aria had rebuked since childhood, touching a part of her that she found disturbingly unfamiliar. She now finds herself in a unique position as she shuffles to regain her balance and reassemble the pieces that Aiden left in his wake. But how will she suppress what Aiden somehow managed to awaken? Led by career aspirations, Aria reluctantly maneuvers within Aiden's orbit and their forced pairing eventually hits several hurdles. Is Aria strong enough to fight her instincts and remain in Aiden's world? Will her initial reservations resurface, confirming her convictions that love can only result in tragedy? Or will Aiden ultimately convince Aria that love isn't the disaster she always thought? Regardless of the option Aria chooses, Aiden's past and other secrets will unfold, forcing Aria down a path she never saw coming. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stella Bloom. Edward Lear: Stories & Rhymes, Hörbuch, Digital, 70min
Ah, Nonsense! The English, it is often said, have a peculiar brand of humour. Along with copious cups of tea and a stiff upper lip it keeps life together in moments of difficulty and strife. One of our most-loved humourists is Edward Lear, famed throughout the world for his nonsense verse and limericks. Born in Holloway, North London, Lear was the 21st child of Ann and Jeremiah Lear, and raised by his sister, Ann, who was, of course, 21 years older than Edward. His early life was unsettled, prone to illness, especially epileptic fits which gave him a character coloured with guilt and shame. However by his 30s he had published his first book of limericks in which his touching drawings were also displayed. His early works as an artist are easily recognised, but his later works such as "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "The Jumblies" have established him first and foremost as a writer of humourous verse. Lear travelled widely during his years and eventually settled in San Remo, in Italy, eventually succumbing to death in 1876. On his headstone are inscribed these lines from Tennyson's "To E.L. [Edward Lear], On His Travels in Greece": ...all things fair. With such a pencil, such a pen. You shadow forth to distant men, I read and felt that I was there." Language: English. A Macat Analysis of Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 107min
A Macat Analysis of Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man. When American political scientist Francis Fukuyama published The End of History and the Last Man in 1992, Western liberal democracies seemed to have won the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Fukuyama believed liberal democracy had triumphed for a reason. Any political system containing "fundamental contradictions," he thought, would eventually be replaced by something else. For Fukuyama, communism was such a system. He believed liberal democracy had no such fundamental contradictions, so it would endure, and other forms of government would eventually give way to it. For Fukuyama, democracy marks the end point in the evolution of ideology, and so the "end of history." There would still be "events," but not any fundamental change. The book's argument cannot so far be proven, of course. Although the number of liberal democracies has increased since 1990, they currently face threats Fukuyama had not foreseen in 1992. Yet the book still offers real food for thought for anyone who cares about politics. You can find out more about how Fukuyama's ideas have been challenged and applied - and how his work has impacted on thinkers in other academic disciplines - by exploring further in the Macat Library. Macat's analyses cover 14 different subjects in the humanities and social sciences. Macat. Learn better. Think smarter. Aim higher. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat Int. 5 Famous English Historical Figures: English History, Hörbuch, Digital, 103min
Five famous English historical figures, five controversial characters of almost legendary proportions, that have to be well-known and understood if one is interested in knowing about the English spirit and history. Sir Francis Drake was a sea captain and a privateer of the Elizabethan era; his exploits made him a hero to the English but his privateering led the Spanish to brand him a pirate. Henry VIII was king in a time of extreme religious unrest, and became such a bloody monster that he was eventually called the "English Nero". Richard III is one of the most divisive and enigmatic figures in British history. His real tragedy was both personal and political; his story, replete with intrigue, murder, war, and treachery. The king wanted to marry Anne Boleyn and used Cromwell to begin the breaking of the power of the Catholic Church in England; the divorce was eventually pronounced, Anne married the king, and it all ended with her beheading. Journal , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 429min
From April 1942 to March 1944, Hélène Berr, a recent graduate of the Sorbonne, kept a journal that is both an intensely moving, intimate, harrowing, appalling document and a text of astonishing literary maturity. With her colleagues, she plays the violin and she seeks refuge from the everyday in what she calls the "selfish magic" of English literature and poetry. But this is Paris under the occupation and her family is Jewish. Eventually, there comes the time when all Jews are required to wear a yellow star. She tries to remain calm and rational, keeping to what routine she can: studying, reading, enjoying the beauty of Paris. Yet always there is fear for the future, and eventually, in March 1944, Hélène and her family are arrested, taken to Drancy Transit Camp and soon sent to Auschwitz. She went - as is later discovered - on the death march to Bergen-Belsen and there she died in 1945, only five days before the liberation of the camp. The last words in the journal she had left behind in Paris were "Horror! Horror! Horror!", a hideous and poignant echo of her English studies. Hélène Berr's story is almost too painful to read, foreshadowing horror as it does amidst an enviable appetite for life, for beauty, for literature, for all that lasts. ungekürzt. Language: English. Wyatt in Wichita: A Historical Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 596min
Author John Shirley turns his pen to the Wild West and the legendary Wyatt Earp! Wyatt in Wichita fuses historical fact with fiction, following the adventures of the young Wyatt Earp. Following the tragic loss of his first wife in the Missouri of 1870 in his early days on the dark side of the West, Wyatt eventually makes his way to Ellsworth and Wichita, where by confronting corruption he would eventually finally find his life’s work as a tough lawman. Could Wyatt Earp have known Billy the Kid when the kid was really just that? Could Wyatt have met up with Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood? Using the sparse trails of historical evidence available to him, the lives of the famous and infamous intersect in Shirley’s novel, which revolves around Wyatt’s search for the murderer of an innocent young woman of Wichita. With Bat Masterson at his side, and bawdy girls about him in the smoky light of crowded saloons, Shirley explores the possible origins of the legendary figure who would forever remain synonymous with the Wild West. Stemming from a true passion and interest in one of the Wild West’s most indelible characters, Wyatt in Wichita is a thrilling read and an imagined glimpse into a seldom-seen side of Wyatt Earp and the untamed frontiers of early America. ungekürzt. My New Doctor , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 60min, (USK 18)
I walked into the examination room, removed my coat and purse, hanging it on the wall hook, sitting down on the blue chair. I couldn't wait to see him again. I wanted to show him my progress, and I couldn't wait until he asked me questions about how I found them. How does he hold that stern, serious doctor persona so well, when I know he truly wants to fuck me so bad? He only wants me to practice using the Ben Wa balls to stretch myself enough to take his full cock someday.I had two weeks to practice the Kegal exercises, and I gave it 100% effort. I did them while watching TV and eventually started walking around the house with them in. I got so comfortable with them, that I decided to risk going to the bank with them still inside me. I couldn't wait to tell the doctor about my progress.See what happens when Dr.Kellis does his second examination on me. Eventually, it's just the two of us left in the office building as the remaining staff leaves early to make their flight. He sent a very subtle hint, inviting me to stay a little longer. I picked up on his invitation and let him know I had no place important to be. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Luna Von H.
