In the predawn darkness of D-Day, an elite fighting force struck the first blows against Hitler's Fortress Europe. Braving a hail of enemy gunfire and mortars, bold invaders from the sky descended into the hedgerow country and swarmed the meadows of Normandy. Some would live, some would die, but all would fight with the guts and determination that made them the most famous US Army division in World War II: the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles". George Koskimaki was part of the 101st Airborne's daring parachute landing into occupied France that day. Now, drawing on more than 500 firsthand accounts, Koskimaki re-creates those critical hours in all their ferocity and terror. Told by those who ultimately prevailed - ordinary Americans who faced an extraordinary challenge - D-Day with the Screaming Eagles is the real history of that climactic struggle beyond the beachhead. ungekürzt. Seven days in hellIn June 1944, the Allies launched a massive amphibious invasion against Nazi-held France. But under the cover of darkness, a new breed of fighting man leapt from airplanes through a bullet-stitched, tracer-lit sky to go behind German lines. These were the Screaming Eagles of the newly formed 101st Airborne Division. Their job was to strike terror into the Nazi defenders, delay reinforcements, and kill any enemy soldiers they met. In the next seven days, the men of the 101st fought some of the most ferocious close-quarter combat in all of World War II.Now, Donald R. Burgett looks back at the nonstop, nightmarish fighting across body-strewn fields, over enemy-held hedgerows, through blown-out towns and devastated forests. This harrowing you-are-there chronicle captures a baptism by fire of a young Private Burgett, his comrades, and a new air-mobile fighting force that would become a legend of war. Language: English. Narrator: David Guion. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bant/000415/bk_bant_000415_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

For firefights in the swamps, ambushes in the jungle, or just facing the enemy dead-on, Recondo trained LRRPs to win. They will never be able to duplicate the 5th Special Forces Recondo School and the training that gave its grads something they desperately needed - the skills to survive Long Range Patrol missions in the jungle that NVA considered its own. Vietman veteran Larry Chambers vividly describes the grit and courage it took to pass the tough volunteer-only training program in Nha Trang and the harrowing graduation mission to scout out, locate, and out-guerrilla the NVA.  Here is an unforgettable account that follows Chambers and the Rangers every step of the way - from joining, going through Recondo, and finally leading his own team on white-knuckle missions through the deadly jungles of Vietnam.   “I made this book mandatory reading for my Rangers.... We went from the worst platoon in the regiment to the best platoon in six months. In training we'd get to the objective so fast they had to hold us back.” (US Army Master Sergeant H. “Max” Mullen, Ret. 75th Ranger Regiment) Language: English. Narrator: Brian Hallas. When novelist and former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson traveled to Afghanistan for an embed with the 101st Airborne Division, he found great soldiers - and a seemingly hopeless mission. This is the gripping non-fiction tale of how the United States is spending $100 billion a year on a war that even the men on the front lines can't explain. ungekürzt. Language: English. Since World War II, the American public has become fully aware of the exploits of the 101st Airborne Division, the paratroopers who led the Allied invasions into Nazi-held Europe. But within the ranks of the 101st, a sub-unit attained legendary status at the time, its reputation persisting among veterans over the decades. Primarily products of the Dustbowl and the Depression, the Filthy13 grew notorious, even within the ranks of the elite 101st. Never ones to salute an officer, or take a bath, this squad became singular within the Screaming Eagles for its hard drinking, and savage fighting skill - and that was only in training. Just prior to the invasion of Normandy, a "Stars and Stripes" photographer caught U.S. paratroopers with heads shaved into Mohawks, applying war paint to their faces. Unknown to the American public at the time, these men were the Filthy 13. After parachuting behind enemy lines in the dark hours before D-Day, the Germans got a taste of the reckless courage of this unit - except now the men were fighting with Tommy guns and explosives, not just bare knuckles. In its spearhead role, the 13 suffered heavy casualties, some men wounded and others blown to bits. By the end of the war 30 men had passed through the squad. Throughout the war, however, the heart and soul of the Filthy 13 remained: a survivor named Jake McNiece, a half-breed Indian from Oklahoma - the toughest man in the squad and the one who formed its character. McNiece made four combat jumps, was in the forefront of every fight in northern Europe, yet somehow never made the rank of PFC. The survivors of the Filthy 13 stayed intact as a unit until the Allies finally conquered Nazi Germany. The book does not draw a new portrait of earnest citizen soldiers. Instead it describes a group of hardscrabble guys whom any respectable person would be loath to meet in a bar or dark alley. But they were an integral part of the U.S. war against Nazi Germany. As if a zombie apocalypse wasn't bad enough, the country is also in the throes of a second Civil War. Massachusetts has closed its borders to everyone, including the 101st Airborne Division and five million desperate refugees. It's an act of rebellion that the President won't stand for, and with nuclear missiles flying by the hundreds in China, he mulls the idea of using nukes on American soil for the first time. And his nuclear sites aren't just centered on Massachusetts, either. Anna Holloway and Lieutenant Eng are loose in Baltimore with vials of infected blood, the city of Philadelphia is crumbling under a terrific storm of undead, and half of Pennsylvania has fallen. Although the call to arms has been answered by thousands of men and women, it won't be enough. The fate of the country rests on a stout few: FBI Agent Katherine Pennock who has to hunt down Anna and Eng before they create more zombies; Sergeant Troy Ross of the 101st who finds himself the linchpin in an epic battle involving millions; and Doctor Thuy Lee who holds the key to a cure somewhere in her brilliant mind. Unfortunately she is still trapped in the Zone with legions of undead and if there is any hope of finding the cure, she first has to live through day four of the apocalypse. ungekürzt.
