Juan Luis Vives: Politics, Rhetoric, and Emotions (eBook, ePUB)
By looking at rhetoric and politics, this book offers a novel account of Juan Luis Vives' intellectual oeuvre. It argues that Vives adjusted rhetorical theory to a monarchical context in which direct speech was not a possibility, demonstrated how Erasmian languages of ethical self-government and political peace were actualized rhetorically and critically in a princely environment and, finally, rethought the cognitive and emotional foundations of humanist rhetoric in his late and famous De anima et vita (1538). Ultimately, towards the end of his life, Vives epitomized a distinctively cognitive view of politics; he maintained that political concord was not a direct outcome of institutional or legal reform or of the spiritual transformation of the Christian world (an optimistic Erasmian interpretation), but that concord could only be upheld once the dynamics of emotions that motivated political action were understood and controlled through responsible rhetoric that respected decorum and civility.- Shop: buecher

Minor Indiscretions , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 384min
Though barely out of the schoolroom, Melody Ashton was determined to save her mother from scandal. Guardian of several "orphans" (in actuality the illegitimate children of the ton!) poor Mama was accused of pilfering contributions. To make matters worse, the infuriatingly handsome Lord Coe had accused them all of blackmailing his sister, whose child resided with them! After such rudeness, his offer to make Melody his mistress was the outside of enough! Ignoring all lessons learned in Mingleforth's Rules of Polite Decorum, she told the rake exactly what he was - starting with reckless reprobate and on to debauched womanizer, self-righteous sapskull, and buffle-headed bounder. Lord Coe was quite confused! Never had a conquest proved so difficult. And never had he feared he was falling so helplessly in love...! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stevie Zimmerman. See Me After Class , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 752min
Did you have relations with my brother? Good question. I’d like to preface this by saying it was never my intention to ever get involved in a workplace romance, let alone get involved with the most surly, agitating, and pompous man I’ve ever met who just so happens to be my new friend’s brother. My intentions were to show students how English and reading books could actually be fun and make a new life for myself in the suburbs of Chicago. But so far, I’ve managed to be called into the principal’s office; I've been coerced into participating in the teacher's badminton league; and I've instigated passionate fights with Arlo Turner over education and decorum while losing my underwear at the same time. Known as Mr. Turns Me On, he’s the reason I might get fired from my first ever teaching job. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Zachary Webber, Erin Mallon. By driving the well-mannered socialite beyond the bounds of her good-girl restraints, he figures he can get himself pulled off of the assignment. But who would have thought that real passion sizzled beneath Juliet's polish—or that when she lets her hair down, she just might prove to be more woman than Beau can handle? ungekürzt. War Poems, Hörbuch, Digital, 132min
This powerful and moving anthology includes poems of war from the 18th century to our own days in the long shadow of the bomb. The poets evoke the glory and the horror, the exhilaration and the despair, the humanity and the insanity of war.The selection of poems, both familiar and less so, provides an illuminating context both for the bitter denunciation of Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est" and for Katherine Tynan's portrayal of the First World War as necessary, just, and Christian, while other poems consider the devastating impact of war on those friends, family, and loved ones who remain behind. The collection also includes works by Anne Finch, Louisa Costello, Byron, Tennyson, Kipling, Hardy, Graves, Sassoon, Brooke, Jessie Pope, May Wedderburn Cannan, Walt Whitman, Henry Reed, Adrian Mitchell, and Roger McGough among many others.
