The Silk Roads: A New History of the World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1453min
It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions, and it was the appetites for foreign goods that drove economies and the growth of nations. From the first cities in Mesopotamia to the emergence of Greece and Rome to the depredations by the Mongols, the transmission of the Black Death, the struggles of the Great Game, and the fall of Communism - the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East. By way of events as disparate as the American Revolution and the world wars of the 20th century, Peter Frankopan realigns the world, orienting us eastward and illuminating how even the rise of the West 500 years ago resulted from its efforts to gain access to and control of these Eurasian trading networks. In an increasingly globalized planet, where current events in Asia and the Middle East dominate the world's attention, this magnificent work of history is very much a work of our times. ungekürzt. Cry for Jerusalem 63-66 CE: Resisting Tyranny, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1021min
Was it fate, destiny, or some divine plan that brought four very different travelers together in their struggle to survive what should have been a routine trip to Rome? Driven by events, these new friends and their family members found themselves playing pivotal roles at a focal point in the history of Western civilization. Winds that had spread a great fire across Rome also carried embers eastward to Judea, where they threatened to ignite a conflict that would forever change the world for Jews and Christians. In this first of a series of four novels, the Jewish rebellion begins in a backdrop of secret tunnels and assassins, where the dreaded Sicarii can strike like lightning and blend back into the crowd just as quickly. Even trained Roman mercenaries are no match for them. In between these historical events - recorded by the historian and eyewitness Josephus - there’s the story of the people involved. You get to meet them in Cry for Jerusalem. For more information go to cryforjerusalem.com. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Simon de Deney. The Luminous Way to the East (eBook, ePUB)
The Luminous Way to the East offers a comprehensive survey of the historical, literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources of the first stage of the Christian mission to China. It explores the complex and multifaceted process of the interaction with the different cultural and religious milieux that the Church of the East experienced in its diffusion throughout Central Asia and into China during the first millennium. Matteo Nicolini-Zani provides an overview of the Christian presence in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907) by reconstructing the composition and organization of Christian communities, the geographical location of Christian monasteries, and the related historical events attested by the sources. Through a new and richly annotated English translation of the Chinese Christian texts produced in Tang China, the volume provides a documented look at what was the earliest, and perhaps the most extraordinary, encounter of Christianity with Chinese culture and religions (Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism). It shows how East Syriac Christianity in its eastward expansion along the Silk Road from Persia to China was open to the adoption of other languages and imagery and was able to enculturate the Christian teaching into new cultural and religious forms without losing its identity.- Shop: buecher

Andy Adams Library Vol 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1308min
This Raging Bull Publishing Box Set contains three classic Western books by Andy Adams, including: Cattle Brands (1906) A collection of 14 western short campfire stories. Bandits, desperadoes, cattle, and bloody shoot-outs are just some of the highlights of these easy to listen to snippets which continued to mimic Andy's life on the cattle trail. Reed Anthony, Cowman (1907) Tells the story of Virginian born Reed Anthony who served during the Civil War, then migrated to Texas to start life as a cowboy, herding cattle to rail heads for transport eastward. More realistic glimpses into western life with Andy Adams. Wells Brothers (1911) Dell and Joel Wells are about to abandon their dead father's claim on Beaver Creek because it won't grow crops. Then unexpected events, and a drover seeking aid, allow them a decent chance in life. The boys develop their own ranch on the Beaver, without capital but with honor. No amount of savvy can entirely prepare them for the risks: cruel winters, rapacious wolf packs, summer droughts, mysterious Texas fever, or the shifting circumstances of the cattle trade. ungekürzt. First World War: 1918: Voices from the BBC Archive, Hörbuch, Digital, 132min
A unique collection of historic recordings in which the last brutal encounters of the war and the mixed emotions of the armistice are remembered by troops from both sides. By the end of March 1918, Germany's Spring Offensive had thrown British forces back over the old Somme battlefields. But this last push failed, and with the stalemate of trench warfare broken, the Allies swept from near defeat to victory. However, their joy was tempered by sorrow. Too many would not come home. For the Germans, the mood was despairing as their 'endless columns rolled eastward', the November fog and rain adding to their melancholy. Memorable reminiscences include an evocative portrait of poet Wilfred Owen, killed shortly before the armistice; American troops on their initiation into the horrors of battle; and reflections on the 'punitive' demands of the Paris Peace Conference. As the Treaty of Versailles was being drafted, the German navy decided its own fate in one final act of defiance, witnessed by a group of schoolchildren on an outing in Scapa Flow. These enduring recollections from the men who fought and the women who waited are a poignant and powerful reminder of the shocking realities of the war. Language: English. Narrator: Jonathan Keeble. The Golden Hawks of Genghis Khan , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 364min
You must not speak of the Golden Hawks! Word easily flies down the caravan trails to the ears of the Mongols in the land of Genghis Khan. And then, Jalair, the Mongols will come and slay you! With this warning from his grandfather, Kurush, the summer of 1218 in Samarkand begins for young Jalair. He has always been told that Mongols slew his father, Darien--the greatest hawker of the empire--and robbed him of a spectacular breed of hunting bird that Darien had perfected. Since then the Mongols have searched relentlessly for the son of the slain hawker. A broken promise and mysterious circumstances cause Jalair to risk the journey eastward to recapture the Golden Hawks. Striving at all costs to conceal his identity, the boy arrives at Karakorum, the city of Genghis Khan. There he finds not only the Golden Hawks but also a deepening of the mystery surrounding them and his father.
