Winston Churchill: A Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 19min
Winston Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer (as Winston S. Churchill), and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for 50 years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as president of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the Sixth Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924 - 1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. ungekürzt. Collisions of the Damned: The Defense of the Dutch East Indies: Usurper's War, Volume 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 537min
The Usurper's War has resumed, with disastrous results for the Allies. In Hawaii, US Pacific Fleet lies shattered after the Battle of Hawaii. Across the Pacific the Imperial Japanese Navy, flush with their recent victory, turns its gimlet eye towards the south and the ultimate prize for their Emperor: The Dutch East Indies. For Commander Jacob Morton and the other members of the Asiatic Fleet, the oncoming Japanese storm means that the USS Houston and her Allied companions must learn to fight against overwhelming odds against an enemy who claims the night as their own. In the skies above Houston and the other old, tired vessels of the ACDA Fleet , Flight Lieutenant Russell Wolford and his men attempt to employ the Allies' newest technology to even the odds. With full might of the Japanese Empire falling on them, the ACDA's soldiers, sailors, and marines must fight to hold the line long enough for reinforcements to come. On the Japanese side, the Dutch East Indies campaign quickly becomes a maelstrom that they did not expect. Vice Admiral Yamaguchi, commander of the Kido Butai and victor of Hawaii, finds himself fighting to preserve the First Air Fleet's carrier wings rather than fritter them away in a battle of attrition. For even as brave pilots such as Lieutenant Isoro Honda and his fellow Shiden pilots cut a bloody swathe through their Allied counterparts, Yamaguchi realizes that his remaining carriers must prepare for one thing: the decisive battle. Collisions of the Damned is the continuation of the Usurper's War series. Picking up where Acts of War left off, this book contains even more relentless combat and breathless naval actions than its predecessor. As Japan confronts a divided United States and its desperate allies, ordinary men and women are forced to make decisions that will have far reaching consequences for both themselves and their nations. ungekürzt. An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action for the Twenty-First Century , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 868min
“As Albert Camus wrote, the doctor’s role is as a witness - to witness authentically the reality of humanity, and to speak out against the horrors of political inaction… The only crime equaling inhumanity is the crime of indifference, silence, and forgetting.” - James Orbinski In 1988, James Orbinski, then a medical student in his 20s, embarked on a year-long research trip to Rwanda, a trip that would change who he would be as a doctor and as a man. Investigating the conditions of pediatric AIDS in Rwanda, James confronted widespread pain and suffering, much of it preventable, much of it occasioned by political and economic corruption. Fuelled by the injustice of what he had seen in Rwanda, Orbinski helped establish the Canadian chapter of Mdecins Sans Frontires (Doctors Without Borders/MSF). As a member of MSF he travelled to Peru during a cholera epidemic, to Somalia during the famine and civil war, and to Jalalabad, Afghanistan. In April 1994, James answered a call from the MSF Amsterdam office. Rwandan government soldiers and armed militias of extremist Hutus had begun systematically to murder Tutsis. While other foreigners were evacuated from Rwanda, Orbinski agreed to serve as Chef de Mission for MSF in Kigali. As Rwanda descended into a hell of civil war and genocide, he and his team worked tirelessly, tending to thousands upon thousands of casualties. In 14 weeks 800,000 men, women and children were exterminated. Half a million people were injured, and millions were displaced. The Rwandan genocide was Orbinski’s undoing. Confronted by indescribable cruelty, he struggled to regain his footing as a doctor, a humanitarian and a man. In the end he chose not to retreat from the world, but resumed his work with MSF, and was the organization’s president when it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. ungekürzt. Language: English. Nice and Naughty: Operation Reindeer Retrieval, Book 9 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 67min
With Rudolph facing off against Santa, Christmas is on the line, along with her freedom.Ru was born in a forest and soon recruited by Santa. He wanted her to help harness the remains of long-dead deities. Christmas is coming into fashion in the human world, and that is a lot of energy to take advantage of. He moves her back in time, and together, they build the workshop.Ru has one problem. Santa tricked her and locked the collar around her neck. Her other forms are no longer hers to command, and without them, she can’t be whole. It has taken her over a thousand years, but she finally has a way to claim her freedom, and if Santa cooperates, Christmas won’t be hurt.Excerpt:Ru sat in the office and watched the gathering below.Santa had rustled up a very handsome selection of elves and was giving them a stern lecture. He was in mid-order when he looked up at her; a bright spark came into his eyes. His whole demeanor changed.Ru sipped at her tea as he bounded up the stairs.“How long have they been gone?”She looked at the tanned face surrounded by the snow-white hair that was his trademark. “Pardon?”He took her cup from her hands and set it on the table before he lifted her by her arms. “Ru, how long have they been gone?”She grinned. “Some have been gone since October. You have to figure out where they are. We didn’t make it easy.”Santa let her go and sat behind his desk. “Why? Why now?”“It was time. We have walked around you long enough, trying not to put pressure on you. We know you miss her, but we exist as well.” Ru resumed her seat and picked up her tea.Santa looked surprised. “Of course I miss her, but you could have said something. It has been decades since she was with us. You never said anything.”“You shut us away and tried to pretend we didn’t exist. How do you think that made us feel? You are so good at knowing what everyone else wants, why ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nicole Blessing. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/182785/bk_acx0_182785_sample.mp3. Rome's Most Notorious Defeats: The History and Legacy of the Battle of Cannae and the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 186min
Although the Romans gained the upper hand over Carthage in the wake of the First Punic War, the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal brought the Romans to their knees for over a decade during the Second Punic War. While military historians are still amazed that he was able to maintain his army in Italy near Rome for nearly 15 years, scholars are still puzzled over some of his decisions, including why he never attempted to march on Rome in the first place. Regardless, Hannibal was such a threat that the Romans responded in an unprecedented nature when the Carthaginians resumed the campaigning season in the spring of 216 BCE by capturing the city of Cannae, a crucial supply hub, and placing themselves along the line that convoys from the ports and warehouses of the south needed to travel to reach Rome. This was something the Romans could not and did not take lying down; Rome raised the largest army in their city's history, a force of between 80,000 and 100,000 men, and marched south with Consuls Varro and Paullus at the head of the army. Varro led the Roman legions straight at the center of Hannibal's formation, proceeding in characteristic bull-headed fashion and spearheading the assault himself. Hannibal's troops in the center yielded before the legions, as Hannibal had anticipated, sucking the bulk of the Roman force deep into the center of Hannibal's formation. Meanwhile, the wings of Hannibal's infantry automatically swung against the flanks of the Roman force. The result was a massacre, one of the most vicious battles in the history of the world. Around 75% of the Roman army was cut down in the ensuing melee, which would be in the vicinity of between 50,000 - 80,000 soldiers depending on which initial estimates are considered to be accurate. Cannae is still considered one of the greatest tactical victories in the history of warfare, and the fact the battle was a complete victory resulting in the wholesale annihilation of the enemy army made i ungekürzt. At All Costs: Honor Harrington, Book 11 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1953min
What price victory? The war with the Republic of Haven has resumed... disastrously for the Star Kingdom of Manticore. Admiral Lady Dame Honor Harrington, Steadholder and Duchess Harrington, the single victorious Allied commander of the opening phase of the new war, has been recalled from the Sidemore System to command Eighth Fleet. Everyone knows Eighth Fleet is the Alliance's primary offensive command, which makes it the natural assignment for the woman the media calls "the Salamander." But what most of the public DOESN'T know is that not only are the Star Kingdom and its Allies badly outnumbered by the Republic's new fleet, but that the odds are going to get steadily worse. Eighth Fleet's job is to somehow prevent those odds from crushing the Alliance before the Star Kingdom can regain its strategic balance. It's a job which won't be done cheaply. Honor Harrington must meet her formidable responsibilities with inferior forces even as she copes with tumultuous changes in her personal and public life. The alternative to victory is total defeat, yet this time the COST of victory will be agonizingly high. A Note from Author David Weber There's been some confusion—not to say, um, energetic debate, readers and fans being readers and fans—about the correct pronunciation of "Manticoran." The truth, alas, is that a stitch was dropped. An error occurred. A mistake was made… and it wasn't Audible's fault. It was mine. Before Audible recorded the very first Honor Harrington book, narrator Allyson Johnson and I not only corresponded by e-mail but actually spoke to one another by phone. She wanted to make absolutely certain she had the correct pronunciations for names, places, star nations, etc., and I tried to make certain all of her questions were answered. And so they were. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, I replied to one of her e-mails by telling her that "Man-ti-core-ahn" was pronounced "Man-tik-er-ahn." Exactly how t ungekürzt. Language: English. Of Shame and Joy (Collection of Classic Erotica) (Volume 11) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 282min, (USK 18)
O Rose thou art sick. /The invisible worm, /That flies in the night /In the howling storm: /Has found out thy bed /Of crimson joy: /And his dark secret love / Does thy life destroy. Those eight lines constitute the complete text of “The Sick Rose,” published by William Blake in Songs of Experience in 1794. I took to Blake early on, and thought Of Crimson Joy would make a dandy title. I accordingly fastened it on this novel when I sent the manuscript to Harry Shorten at Midwood. Someone there changed the title to Of Shame and Joy, and while I was a tad annoyed at the time, I have to say they made the right call. Of Shame and Joy's not only a better title, it’s a damn good one. I remember where and when I wrote the book, although I can’t say I recall much of the writing, or indeed of the book itself. It would have been in the late summer or fall of 1959. I’d gone to New York in July, settling in at the Hotel Rio on West 47th Street, planning to stay there until it was time to return to Antioch College for my final year. What I soon learned was that I’d already had my final year at Antioch, at least as far as the school was concerned. I’d written Campus Tramp, my first book as Andrew Shaw just before they informed me of this decision, and then I went to work on something else, and a bad morning led me to pack a bag and move back to my parents’ home at 422 Starin Avenue in Buffalo. And, back in Buffalo, I set up my typewriter on the little maple desk on which I’d written Strange Are the Ways of Love and Carla, and resumed writing books for Harry Shorten at Midwood, - and for Bill Hamling at Nightstand, who’d liked Campus Tramp enough to want more. For the next eight months or so I wrote books on that desk. My routine was an interesting one; I’d join my mother at the kitchen table for a cup of coffee around midnight, then write all night, then have breakfast with my dad around seven - and then go to bed.
Since the Renaissance, plaster casts have been the most important medium for the three-dimensional reproduction of historical sculptures. They experienced their golden age in the 19th century, when huge plaster collections were created and the casts were in some cases even equated with original works of art. In the early 20th century, plaster as a material was temporarily discredited - not least because of the unsightly appearance of older, dirty casts - and many important collections were destroyed. Plaster is an ideal casting material, but it is sensitive to dust and difficult to clean - a problem that was vividly discussed in public and among experts already in the 1870s. At that time even international conferences were held on the problem of plaster cleaning and conservation. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of its cast collection, the Archaeological Institute of the University of Göttingen resumed this debate and made it the subject of an international conference attended by curators of archaeological university collections, art historians, materials scientists and restoration experts from eight countries. The 23 conference contributions in German and English published in this volume explain the concepts for the presentation of greyed, material-imitating and white-coated or over-sprayed plaster casts from the context of the respective collection history. Cleaning methods presented in case studies range from the use of various sponges and pastes or gels to laser applications. Different procedures for removing secondary paint layers on plaster casts are also discussed. The examples stem from numerous university cast collections, but also from large European museums, academies and libraries. Not only casts of historical sculptures are considered, but also artists' original plaster works from the 19th and 20th centuries.- Shop: buecher
