Madeline Fraser, radio talk show host extraordinaire, had a natural dread of dead air. So when one of her on-air guests signed off at the mike after drinking a glass of a sponsor’s beverage, it was a broadcaster’s nightmare come true. Enter Nero Wolfe. He agrees to take the case, with his sizable fee contingent on his solving the murder. But to Wolfe’s surprise, everyone connected to the case now lies in unison about it. And as the portly detective soon discovers, the secret worth lying about only hides another worth killing for.   Introduction by Maan Meyers “It is always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore.” (The New York Times Book Review)A grand master of the form, Rex Stout is one of America’s greatest mystery writers, and his literary creation Nero Wolfe is one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time. Together, Stout and Wolfe have entertained - and puzzled - millions of mystery fans around the world. Now, with his perambulatory man-about-town, Archie Goodwin, the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth is back in the original 73 cases of crime and detection written by the inimitable master himself, Rex Stout. ungekürzt. In the third book of the Jocelyn O'Roarke series, the actress and amateur detective finally gets her big break; too bad a murder has to come along and ruin it. It has been a tough road thus far for the audacious Jocelyn "Josh" O'Roarke. Every time she feels like she's moving up in the theater world, her life is derailed by a murder. Now, she is about to make her big move with her directorial debut Off-Broadway. Even better, it's a revival of Major Barbara - a surefire hit. It seems nothing could go wrong - until stage veteran Burton Evans collapses on stage during a preview, apparently from a heart attack. As the director of the play, Josh must get to the truth. Despite Evans's kindly exterior, he was hiding a history that gave several people motives for murder. Could he have been killed for his sizable inheritance? Perhaps someone objected to his testimony to the House Committee on Un-American Activities in the 1950s? Jocelyn O'Roarke needs answers if the curtain is ever to go up on her debut. Death Mask is the third book in the Jocelyn O'Roarke mystery series, which begins with Murder on Cue and First Hit of the Season. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jane Dentinger. Finally, a how-not-to guide for marketers who are tired of wasting time, energy, and money on tactics that no longer work. In a world with too many choices and too little time, companies without highly engaged, devoted, and vocal customers won't survive.Unfortunately, too many brand stewards, and subsequently their budgets, are seemingly addicted to certain marketing behaviors and woefully underinvest in some of the most impactful yet least appreciated marketing activities. All too often, vitally important consumer engagement strategies fall to other departments or disciplines, such as HR, operations, or merchandising. While other groups may be competent and well-intentioned, they usually lack the skills, resources and funding found within the marketing group that would allow their brand to become truly remarkable. This audiobook was recorded to inspire bold brand leaders to reclaim marketing's power position within the C-suite and more fully exploit the rich talent and sizable budgets at their disposal. CMOs are the rightful stewards of the two most important things a business does...improving consumer engagement and increasing sales. But that kind of stewardship requires radically redefining the day-to-day responsibilities of the marketing department, weaning itself off promotional sales tactics, and refocusing its efforts on six specific areas that best help brands attract cultlike followers. ungekürzt. Trouble follows the Garcia sisters, and this time a close family friend is in the hot seat. Once again they band together to come to his aid. But even with the trash-talking ghost of their dead sister, Tessa, making another appearance from the "other side", they have their work cut out for them to keep their friend and sibling from wearing an orange jumpsuit. After Emily Ruiz Santiago is killed in a shootout with police during a bank robbery in El Paso, Dr. Kate Garcia gets a call from a Houston lawyer. Seems the woman has left her sizable inheritance to Kate and family friend, Benny Yates, who runs the Mission of Hope, a soup kitchen for the down and out citizens of Vineyard. The problem is the Emily they knew lived on the streets of Vineyard and died of a drug overdose three months before. Suspicion falls on Benny when another homeless person drops dead at the Mission, and he is listed as the beneficiary on the man's recent life insurance policy. The Garcia sisters go into sleuth mode once again to keep their friend out of jail before they discover one of their own is also a suspect. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Genvieve Bevier. In the early nineteenth century, Rochester, New York, and St. Catharines, Canada West, were the last stops on the Niagara branch of the Underground Railroad. Both cities handled substantial fugitive slave traffic and were logical destinations for the settlement of runaways because of their progressive stance on social issues including abolition of slavery, women's rights, and temperance. Moreover, these urban centers were home to sizable free Black communities as well as an array of individuals engaged in the abolitionist movement, such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Anthony Burns, and Hiram Wilson. dann j. Broyld's Borderland Blacks explores the status and struggles of transient Blacks within this dynamic zone, where the cultures and interests of the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and the African Diaspora overlapped.Blacks in the two cities shared newspapers, annual celebrations, religious organizations, and kinship and friendship ties. Too often, historians have focused on the one-way flow of fugitives on the Underground Railroad from America to Canada when in fact the situation on the ground was far more fluid, involving two-way movement and social collaborations. Black residents possessed transnational identities and strategically positioned themselves near the American-Canadian border where immigration and interaction occurred. Borderland Blacks reveals that physical separation via formalized national barriers did not sever concepts of psychological memory or restrict social ties. Broyld investigates how the times and terms of emancipation affected Blacks on each side of the border, including their use of political agency to pit the United States and British Canada against one another for the best possible outcomes.

Herodotus was a Greek historian born in Halicarnassus, subject at the time of the great Persian Empire. He lived in the fifth century BC (c. 484 - c. 425 BC), a contemporary of Socrates. He is often referred to as "The Father of History", a title originally conferred by Cicero. Herodotus was the first historian known to have broken from Homeric tradition in order to treat historical subjects as a method of investigation, specifically by collecting his materials in a critical, systematic fashion and then arranging them into a chronological narrative. The Histories (also known as The Persian Wars) is the only work Herodotus is known to have produced. It is a record of his inquiry into the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars, including a wealth of geographical and ethnographical information. Some of his stories were fanciful and others inaccurate. Yet he states that he was reporting only what he was told. A sizable portion of the information he provided was later confirmed by historians and archaeologists. Despite Herodotus' historical significance, very little is known of his personal life and academic history. The work is divided into nine sections, or "books". This version of The Histories is by A. D. Godley, first published in 1920. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. All Raz Colt wants is land, a quiet, peaceable existence, and to put his life as a hired gun in the past. When the chance to earn a sizable fortune by rescuing a kidnapped heiress comes his way, he seizes the opportunity. Trouble is, the heiress doesn't want to be rescued. Offsetting Arden O'Hara's beauty is a rattlesnake personality and shrewish temper. Despite her claim that she faked the kidnapping so her fiancé would ride to her rescue, Raz knows someone is out to kill her. And if anyone gets the pleasure of wringing her lovely neck, it's going to be him. Arden O'Hara is desperate to go home. Her fiancé was supposed to ride to her rescue, proving it's her - and not her father's money - he loves. Instead, an arrogant stranger with weapons strapped gunfighter low and a decided lack of sympathy for her situation shows up spouting a ridiculous tale about someone trying to kill her. It's infuriating when Raz Colt's claims prove true after not one but several attempts are made on her life. She has no idea who this fast gun with the deadly aim is or why he makes her feel as wild and untamed as the Texas wind. But like it or not, if anyone is capable of getting her home alive, it's Raz Colt. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dawson McBride.
