Jazz Theory: From Basic to Advanced Study, Second Edition, is a comprehensive textbook for those with no previous study in jazz, as well as those in advanced theory courses. Written with the goal to bridge theory and practice, it provides a strong theoretical foundation from music fundamentals to post-tonal theory, while integrating ear training, keyboard skills, and improvisation. It hosts "play-along" audio tracks on a Companion Website, including a workbook, ear-training exercises, and an audio compilation of the musical examples featured in the book. Jazz Theory is organized into three parts: Basics, Intermediate, and Advanced. This approach allows for success in a one-semester curriculum or with subsequent terms. If students sense that theory can facilitate their improvisational skills or can help them develop their ears, they become more engaged in the learning process. The overall pedagogical structure accomplishes precisely that in an original, creative-and above all, musical-manner. KEY FEATURES include 390 musical examples, ranging from original lead sheets of standard tunes, jazz instrumentals, transcriptions, and original compositions, to fully realized harmonic progressions, sample solos, and re-harmonized tunes. The completely revamped Companion Website hosts: 46 "Play Along Sessions" audio tracks, offering experiences close to real-time performance scenarios. Over 1,000 (audio and written) exercises covering ear training, rhythm, notation, analysis, improvisation, composition, functional keyboard, and others. Recordings of all 390 musical examples from the textbook. Links: Guide to Making Transcriptions, List of Solos to Transcribe, Selected Discography, Classification of Standard Tunes, and more. Lists of well-known standard tunes, including a comprehensive list of 999 Standard Tunes - Composers and Lyricists. NEW TO THE SECOND EDITION are instructors' tools with answer keys to written and ear-training exercises, 380 rhythmic calisthenics featuring exercises from the swing, bebop, and Latin rhythmic traditions, a new improvisation section, a set of 140 Comprehensive Keyboard exercises, plus an expanded ear-training section with 125 melodic, 50 rhythmic dictations, and 170 harmonic dictations, plus 240 written exercises, 25 composition assignments, and 110 singing exercises. Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most unfathomable composers in the history of music. How can such sublime work have been produced by a man who (when we can discern his personality at all) seems so ordinary, so opaque - and occasionally so intemperate?John Eliot Gardiner grew up passing one of the only two authentic portraits of Bach every morning and evening on the stairs of his parents' house, where it hung for safety during the Second World War. He has been studying and performing Bach ever since, and is now regarded as one of the composer's greatest living interpreters. The fruits of this lifetime's immersion are distilled in this remarkable book, grounded in the most recent Bach scholarship but moving far beyond it, which explains in wonderful detail the ideas on which Bach drew, how he worked, how his music is constructed, how it achieves its effects - and what it can tell us about Bach the man.Gardiner's background as a historian has encouraged him to search for ways in which scholarship and performance can cooperate and fruitfully coalesce. This has entailed piecing together the few biographical shards, scrutinising the music, and watching for those instances when Bach's personality seems to penetrate the fabric of his notation. Gardiner's aim is 'to give the reader a sense of inhabiting the same experiences and sensations that Bach might have had in the act of music-making. This, I try to show, can help us arrive at a more human likeness discernible in the closely related processes of composing and performing his music.'It is very rare that such an accomplished performer of music should also be a considerable writer and thinker about it. John Eliot Gardiner takes us as deeply into Bach's works and mind as perhaps words can. The result is a unique book about one of the greatest of all creative artists.SIR JOHN ELIOT GARDINER is one of the world's leading conductors, not only of Baroque music but across the whole repertoire. He founded the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Lyon, the English Baroque Soloists, and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique. He has conducted most of the world's great orchestras and in many of the leading opera houses. He lives and farms in Dorset.

The International Phonetic Alphabet is a system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of spoken language. The IPA is used by lexicographers, foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech-language pathologists, singers, actors, constructed language creators, and translators. This edition of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is written entirely in that same alphabet, with fonts specially designed by Michael Everson. The transcription reflects the standard, regionally-neutral form of spoken British English known as "Received Pronunciation". Granted that most linguists agree that not much more than 4% of the population of Britain speak it today, RP was nevertheless traditionally based on educated speech in southern England; it is still widely taught and dictionaries for native speakers and learners of English still make use of it in their transcriptions. Because this is a novel, and meant to be read, it was decided to retain some orthographic features which are not normally kept in phonetic transcription: punctuation, italicization, and capitalization. Carroll's punctuation has been retained with the exception of the apostrophe marking the genitive (because "Duchess's voice" just looked wrong as "'D¿t¿¿s'¿z v¿¿s"). ---- Ði¿ ¿¿nt¿'næ¿¿nl F¿¿'net¿k 'Ælf¿b¿t ¿z ¿ 's¿st¿m ¿v f¿¿'net¿k n¿¿'te¿¿¿n be¿st 'präm¿r¿l¿ ¿n ð¿ 'Læt¿n 'ælf¿b¿t. ¿t w¿z d¿'väzd bä ði¿ ¿¿nt¿'næ¿¿nl F¿¿'net¿k ¿¿s¿¿s¿'e¿¿¿n æz ¿ 'stænd¿däzd ¿repr¿zen'te¿¿¿n ¿v ð¿ sändz ¿v 'sp¿¿k¿n 'læ¿gw¿d¿. п 'A¿ 'Pi¿ 'E¿ ¿z ju¿zd bä ¿leks¿'k¿gr¿f¿z, 'f¿r¿n 'læ¿gw¿d¿ 'stju¿d¿nts, ¿nd 'ti¿t¿¿z, 'l¿¿gw¿sts, spi¿t¿ ¿n 'læ¿gw¿d¿ p¿'¿¿l¿d¿¿sts, 's¿¿¿z, 'ækt¿z, k¿n'str¿kt¿d 'læ¿gw¿d¿ kri¿'e¿t¿z, ¿nd træns'le¿t¿z. пs ¿'d¿¿¿n ¿v "'Æl¿s¿z ¿d'vent¿¿z ¿n 'W¿nd¿¿lænd" pr¿'zents ð¿ tekst ¿n ¿n ¿¿nt¿'næ¿¿nl F¿¿'net¿k 'Ælf¿b¿t træns'kr¿p¿¿n. п træns'kr¿p¿¿n r¿'flekts ð¿ 'stænd¿d 'ri¿d¿¿nli 'nju¿tr¿l f¿¿m ¿v 'sp¿¿k¿n 'Br¿t¿¿ '¿¿gl¿¿ n¿¿n æz "R¿'si¿vd Pr¿¿n¿ns¿'e¿¿¿n". ¿r¿¿nt¿d ðæt m¿¿st 'l¿¿gw¿sts ¿'gri¿ ðæt n¿t m¿t¿ m¿¿ ðæn 4% ¿v ð¿ ¿p¿pj¿'le¿¿¿n ¿v 'Br¿t¿n spi¿k ¿t t¿'de¿, '¿¿ 'Pi¿ w¿z ¿nev¿ð¿'les tr¿'d¿¿n¿l¿ be¿st ¿n 'edju¿ke¿t¿d spi¿t¿ ¿n 's¿ð¿n '¿¿gl¿nd; ¿t ¿z st¿l 'wädli t¿¿t ¿nd 'd¿k¿¿nr¿z f¿ 'ne¿t¿v 'spi¿k¿z ¿nd 'l¿¿n¿z ¿v '¿¿gl¿¿ st¿l me¿k ju¿s ¿v ¿t ¿n ðe¿ træns'kr¿p¿¿nz. This third edition presents a well-defined roadmap, so the reader can move along a step-by-step process from requirements gathering all the way to code generation. The author teaches the skill of OOA/D using the latest version of the industry standard modeling language (UML 2.0). He also allows the reader to learn and apply the popular concept of design patterns, and therefore helps readers accelerate their mastery of analysis and design. The author retains his thorough treatment of a single case study to help readers gain a big picture of successful software development. Once again, this book delivers, and furthers Craig Larman's name among software engineering luminaries. Product Description "This edition contains Larman's usual accurate and thoughtful writing. It is a very good book made even better." -Alistair Cockburn, author, Writing Effective Use Cases and Surviving OO Projects"Too few people have a knack for explaining things. Fewer still have a handle on software analysis and design. Craig Larman has both." -John Vlissides, author, Design Patterns and Pattern Hatching"People often ask me which is the best book to introduce them to the world of OO design. Ever since I came across it Applying UML and Patterns has been my unreserved choice." -Martin Fowler, author, UML Distilled and Refactoring"This book makes learning UML enjoyable and pragmatic by incrementally introducing it as an intuitive language for specifying the artifacts of object analysis and design. It is a well written introduction to UML and object methods by an expert practitioner." -Cris Kobryn, Chair of the UML Revision Task Force and UML 2.0 Working Group A brand new edition of the world's most admired introduction to object-oriented analysis and design with UML Fully updated for UML 2 and the latest iterative/agile practices Includes an all-new case study illustrating many of the book's key points Applying UML and Patterns is the world's #1 business and college introduction to "thinking in objects"-and using that insight in real-world object-oriented analysis and design. Building on two widely acclaimed previous editions, Craig Larman has updated this book to fully reflect the new UML 2 standard, to help you master the art of object design, and to promote high-impact, iterative, and skillful agile modeling practices. Developers and students will learn object-oriented analysis and design (OOA/D) through three iterations of two cohesive, start-to-finish case studies. These case studies incrementally introduce key skills, essential OO principles and patterns, UML notation, and best practices. You won't just learn UML diagrams-you'll learn how to apply UML in the context of OO software development. Drawing on his unsurpassed experience as a mentor and consultant, Larman helps you understand evolutionary requirements and use cases, domain object modeling, responsibility-driven design, essential OO design, layered architectures, "Gang of Four" design patterns, GRASP, iterative methods, an agile approach to the Unified Process (UP), and much more. This edition's extensive improvements include A stronger focus on helping you master OOA/D through case studies that demonstrate key OO principles and patterns, while also applying the UML New coverage of UML 2, Agile Modeling, Test-Driven Development, and refactoring Many new tips on combining iterative and evolutionary development with OOA/D Updates for easier study, including new learning aids and graphics New college educator teaching resources Guidance on applying the UP in a light, agile spirit, complementary with other iterative methods such as XP and Scrum Techniques for applying the UML to documenting architectures A new chapter on evolutionary requirements, and much more Applying UML and Patterns, Third Edition, is a lucid and practical introduction to thinking and designing with objects-and creating systems that are well crafted, robust, and maintainable. Features + Benefits This third edition again delivers a clear path for students and professionals to learn and apply object-oriented analysis and design. Proven strategies for maintaining and optimizing legacy code to get the most out of your existing applications. Examples in C-sharp, C++, and Java, as well as strategies for better using the industry standard modeling language: UML 2.0 Addresses the very concrete problems that programmers face working in the context of large untested code bases Based on successful classes for Object Mentor, the author helps organizations maintain older systems rather than go to the cost of developing new ones This book provides programmers with the ability to cost effectively handle common legacy code problems without having to go through the hugely expensive task of rewriting all existing code. It describes a series of practical strategies that developers can employ to bring their existing software applications under control. The author provides useful guidance about how to use these strategies when refactoring or making functional changes to code bases. One of the book's key points is that it teaches developers to write tests that can be used to make sure they are not unintentionally changing the application as they optimize it. Examples are provided in Java, C++, and Csharp, and the book assumes that the reader has some knowledge of UML notation. Strategies using UML and code in C++ and Java primarily while language independent advice will be delivered in side bars and appendices for language specific users. Examples are provided in Java, C++, and Csharp, and the book assumes that the reader has some knowledge of UMLnotation. Strategies using UML and code in C++ and Java primarily whilelanguage independent advice will be delivered in side bars and appendices forlanguage specific users. Backcover Get more out of your legacy systems: more performance, functionality, reliability, and manageability Is your code easy to change? Can you get nearly instantaneous feedback when you do change it? Do you understand it? If the answer to any of these questions is no, you have legacy code, and it is draining time and money away from your development efforts. In this book, Michael Feathers offers start-to-finish strategies for working more effectively with large, untested legacy code bases. This book draws on material Michael created for his renowned Object Mentor seminars: techniques Michael has used in mentoring to help hundreds of developers, technical managers, and testers bring their legacy systems under control. The topics covered include Understanding the mechanics of software change: adding features, fixing bugs, improving design, optimizing performance Getting legacy code into a test harness Writing tests that protect you against introducing new problems Techniques that can be used with any language or platform-with examples in Java, C++, C, and C# Accurately identifying where code changes need to be made Coping with legacy systems that aren't object-oriented Handling applications that don't seem to have any structure This book also includes a catalog of twenty-four dependency-breaking techniques that help you work with program elements in isolation and make safer changes. © Copyright Pearson Education.
