Hedge Apple , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 92min
'But how do I get in?' The narrator asks himself, just as Alice did before she followed the White Rabbit. In a similar land of magical realism, Ronald R. Van Stockum, Jr. sets up an escapade in 'a long thicket of trees separating two sloping farm fields'. We hike with Tony beyond a fallen fence with twists of old barbed wire wrapping into the tree bark of the forest perimeter. Encountering 'Buddha-like' images, muscular snakes that grasp at his clothing, and rotting fruits from Hedge Apple trees, Tony ventures further into the unknown forest. The author, a biologist, environmentalist, musician, and historian, takes us into his philosophical world of surreal science. His adventurous narrator realizes that adulthood does not necessarily end the wonder of youth. If the listener wants an uplifting view of an emotional landscape, or a straight-up scientific thriller where the hero is chased by towering, glowering, gigantic monsters, it's all here in this fabulous tale. Like Walt Whitman poetry, the language is rich in meaning, allusion, alliteration, and a sly humor. Lovely and memorable. (Mary Popham) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: George Sirois. Battlecry: Winning the Battle for the Mind with a Slogan That Kills , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 204min
Why are most slogans and taglines ineffective? Because they're just words and a mind cannot understand words. A mind can only understand sounds. Why do most Americans remember the battlecry of the French Revolution ("Liberté, égalité, fraternité") when they cannot remember the battlecry of the American Revolution? Because the sounds of the words "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" rhyme and that's one of the powerful techniques for creating a memorable slogan. In addition to "rhyme", there are four other techniques outlined in my new book, Battlecry. 1. Rhyme: "Roto-Rooter, that's the name. And away go troubles down the drain." 2. Alliteration: "M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hands." 3. Repetition: "The few. The proud. The Marines." 4. Reversals: "Two great tastes that taste great together. Reese's peanut butter cups." 5. Double-entendre: "A diamond is forever." You might think companies and their ad agencies would be wise to these techniques. But few slogans actually use any of these memory-building tactics. In a recent survey of 266 advertising slogans, only 19 used any one of them. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Chris Roman. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 146min
A modernization by A. S. Kline Narrated by Jack Wynters Written in the Middle English of the late 14th century, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight survives in a single manuscript which also contains three religious poems including "Pearl", written it seems by the same author, who is therefore referred to as The Pearl Poet. The poem tells the story of an incident at the court of King Arthur, involving Sir Gawain’s acceptance of a challenge from the mysterious Green Knight, and leading to a test of his chivalry and courage. The poem is a lively, atmospheric, and cleverly-paced example of a quest tale, from which the hero emerges chastened and wiser, and contains an interesting mix of Celtic, French, and English motifs. There are many and varied interpretations of the themes and symbols contained in the story, and echoes are found in many other folklore tales and legends. About the Author: The Pearl Poet appears to have been a 14th-century contemporary of Chaucer, and the dialect in which the poem is written suggests an origin in the English West Midlands. The poem is written in an alliterative style, in variable length stanzas, their lines containing two pairs of stressed syllables, and each stanza ending in a rhyming quatrain. It is seen as an example of work produced during the Alliterative Revival of the period, but by combining alliteration and rhyme leads forward to the flexible rhymed and unrhymed verse of later times. Various attempts have been made to identify the Pearl Poet with a historical personage but no candidate has been generally accepted. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jack Wynters.
