Welcome to the audiobook version of The Free Brontosaurus, David Berkeley's novella comprising 10 interweaving stories, complete with his accompanying album of 10 songs, one for each character. This is an incredible merging of genres, exploring the relationship between literature and music, between prose and lyric. Here, you get the stories and the songs sequenced together. The stories in The Free Brontosaurus are all set in the same fictional city, at the same moment in time, minor characters in one story are major characters in another. It is a bit like Olive Kitteridge, if reimagined by Miranda July. These are gently written narratives of isolation, describing characters disconnected from home and community. The book is full of dark humor, sadness, and glimmers of joy. Ultimately, the characters' abilities to find beauty in the bizarre connect and redeem them, offering the characters (and us) hope. The book is only half of this project, though, for it also comes with a soundtrack: Cardboard Boat, comprising one song per story, written from the perspective of the main character from each tale. The album features Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins on background vocals. Both the book and the album can stand alone. However, when the two are combined, as they are here, an unusually moving and multi-layered world is born, likely to break and heal the heart. Berkeley has collected some of his favorite musicians and friends to read these stories: songwriters Vienna Teng, Dan Bern, Garrison Starr, Natalia Zukerman, Kim Taylor, and Jono Manson; David's bandmates Bill Titus and Jordan Katz; David's wife Sarah Davis; and David himself. ungekürzt. With bad-boy club owner Lennox Gates on her heels, Rid is determined to find out the truth. What she discovers is worse than she could have imagined: Link has a price on his head that no Caster or Mortal can ever pay. With their lives on the line, what's a Siren to do? Some nights, we have the road to ourselves and the radio sings only for us. We play our shows and tear ass out. Tonight, it was this little dive bar in a town we took to calling East Motherless. But we play, no matter. We rock and then we roll. The soundcheck and the fury, the power chord and the glory. Then we load our gear into a muddy-brown Merc with a little trailer behind, and we're off. Slinging gravel, filling sky with road. All his life, Luther Gaunt has heard songs in his head, songs of sweet evil and blue ruckus, odes to ghosts, drinking hymns. In search of his past, he hits the road with his band, the Long Gone Daddies, and his grandfather's cursed guitar, Cassie. While his bandmates just want to make it big when they get to Memphis, Luther retraces the steps of his father and grandfather, who each made the same journey with the same guitar years earlier. Malcolm Gaunt could have been - Elvis that white man who could sing black - except his rounder's ways got him shot before he could strike that first note for Sam Phillips at Sun Records. At least that's what Luther's father, Malcolm's son, always told him before he made like smoke when fame came calling and disappeared down South, too. As Luther discovers the truth about the two generations of musicians that came before him, he must face the ghosts of history, the temptations of the road, and the fame cravings of a seriously treacherous woman named Delia, who, it turns out, can sing like an angel forsaken. Long Gone Daddies is lyrically written and accessible as a hook-filled song and proves that the people who struggle the most are invariably the most interesting - and the most noble whether they succeed or not. ungekürzt. Fairy tales for our times from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours. A poisoned apple and a monkey's paw with the power to change fate; a girl whose extraordinarily long hair causes catastrophe; a man with one human arm and one swan's wing; and a house deep in the forest, constructed of gumdrops and gingerbread, vanilla frosting and boiled sugar. In A Wild Swan and Other Tales, the people and the talismans of lands far, far away - the mythic figures of our childhoods and the source of so much of our wonder - are transformed by Michael Cunningham into stories of sublime revelation. Here are the moments that our fairy tales forgot or deliberately concealed: the years after a spell is broken, the rapturous instant of a miracle unexpectedly realized, or the fate of a prince only half cured of a curse. The Beast stands ahead of you in line at the convenience store, buying smokes and a Slim Jim, his devouring smile aimed at the cashier. A malformed little man with a knack for minor acts of wizardry goes to disastrous lengths to procure a child. A loutish and lazy Jack prefers living in his mother's basement to getting a job, until the day he trades a cow for a handful of magic beans. Re-imagined by one of the most gifted storytellers of his generation, our bedtime stories been this dark, this perverse, or this true. Program contains music composed specifically for the audiobook by Billy Hough and his bandmates in GarageDogs. Billy Hough says: "The original piece 'A Wild Swan' was written as a gift to Michael, due to my incredibly strong reaction to hearing these beautiful stories for the first time. I enlisted the brilliant Lili Taylor to alternate the stories with me, and wrote a series of short pieces of music, for their eventual inclusion on this album. I wanted to use the music to illustrate the tension between the ancient and the modern, much in the same way Michael has done in the stories themselves." /p ungekürzt. Language: English. From New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Seaside Pictures series....It’s not every day you're slapped on stage by two different women you've been dating for the last year. I know what you're thinking. What sort of ballsy woman gets on stage and slaps a rockstar? Does nobody have self-control anymore? It may have been the talk of the Grammys. Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that. I, Ty Cuban, was taken down by two psychotic women in front of the entire world. Lucky for us the audience thought it was part of the breakup song my band and I had just finished performing. I was 33, hardly ready to settle down. Except now it's getting forced on me. Seaside, Oregon. My bandmates were more than happy to settle down, dig their roots into the sand, and start popping out kids. Meanwhile I was still enjoying life. Until now. Until my forced hiatus teaching freaking guitar lessons at the local studio for the next two months. Part of my punishment, do something for the community while I think deep thoughts about all my life choices. Sixty days of hell. It doesn't help that the other volunteer is a past flame that literally looks at me as if I've sold my soul to the devil. She has the voice of an angel and looks to kill - I would know, because she looks ready to kill me every second of every day. I broke her heart when we were on tour together a decade ago. I'm ready to put the past behind us. She's ready to run me over with her car then stand on top of it and strum her guitar with glee. Sixty days. I can do anything for 60 days. Including making the sexy Von Abigail fall for me all over again. This time for good. Damn, maybe there’s something in the water. Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a stand-alone story. For new listeners, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope y ungekürzt. Language: English. Ryan Lee's contemplative, straightforward lyrics speak of intense emotions and scarring experiences. His powerful and expressive voice draws you into the jagged landscape of his imagination, and his undulating melodies suspend you there. As mature as his songwriting is, Lee came late to music. Originally from Janesville, Wisconsin, the 29-year-old songwriter and musician moved to Saint Paul, MN, and studied drama for a couple of years in college before dropping out 'to do the whole starving actor thing,' as he puts it. Lee says it was the creative constraints he experienced with theater that eventually led him to songwriting. 'Songwriting just came along and hit me so hard, so unexpectedly. It was more of a release for me than taking directions from a director. I could write whatever I wanted to and sing whatever I wanted to, completely free from rules or judgment' he says. 'It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, and I have been hooked ever since.' In the spring of 2005, Lee released his first full-length album, 'The Pride Before the Fall'. Full of folky electronica, trip-hop, rock balladry and touches of world music, 'Pride' offers technology-enhanced melodiousness and song structures that have been opened up and allowed to breathe. Some of modern rock's bravest innovators lurk below the surface of this album. Neil Finn looms large in the loyalty-themed lyrics, circular acoustic riffs and soaring vocal melodies of 'Unconditional.' Lou Barlow prowls through the vocal doubling and melancholy glockenspiel of 'What's Worse.' A young Thom Yorke haunts the rough-hewn distortion and sparse arrangement of 'Too Little Too Late.' But Lee's lyrical technique sets him apart from his influences. He shuns the norms of meter and rhyme in favor of lucid narrative honesty, a technique that makes some tracks seem more like stories set to music rather than plain, old, run-of-the-mill songs. He examines traditional themes of love and loneliness articulately and contemplatively, then tackles parental conflict, the drug addiction of a loved-one, and his experience being mugged on a beach in Brazil with equal grace. Since the release of 'Pride', Lee and his bandmates have been busy playing shows around the Midwest. Radio airplay and a great collection of local press in the Twin Cities has also helped create a buzz around this beautiful album. The pleasingly eclectic group of songs on 'Pride' speaks of a strong talent growing stronger, and Lee has begun his steadfast journey as an artist of substance and quality.

Multi-instrumentalist and singer Martin Cliffe put the band Voyager Project together to enable him to realise his artistic vision. A veteran of several bands that had limited aspirations or scope, Martin wanted to be able to push the boundaries. A committed Christian and active worship musician, he recruited his bandmates from other churches, to reinforce his own musical and life philosophy. Childhood friend Rob Ogden, himself a talented multi-instrumentalist, joined to play rhythm and acoustic guitars, and Martin's wife Eva contributes drums and percussion. The fantastic if somewhat eccentric Dan Guerrard supplies lush and creative keyboard textures, while Aynsley Sutton rounds out the quintet with his rock solid basslines. The sixth member of the band is lyricist Ed Cooke, whose unique talent with words presents the band with many thought-provoking ideas. Influenced by a huge range of artists and styles, from progressive rock, country, pop, blues and modern rock genres, this collection of songs covers many bases. It features inventive instrumental sections, diverse arrangements, catchy riffs and vocals, layered vocal harmonies and more! There is nothing explicitly Christian about their lyrics, as the band prefer to keep their music accessible to all and to act out their faith in the way they live, but a listen to the album will certainly give you plenty to think about! Comments from fans upon hearing the songs include: 'Cool music! :)' 'I'm loving your tracks, great arrangements!' 'I really enjoyed listening your music... Great tunes and fantastic arrangements!' 'Been listening to your songs. Real nice work guys. I love the keyboard use' 'I go all over these charts listening... You, my musical friends, are one of a kind and I appreciate you much!' 'sounds great man! You guys rock! Got a fan here!' 'I'm listening to your tunes right now and think They Rock!'

It's been six years since Toronto's Selina Martin released Space Woman, a much-loved first record that earned her piles of acclaim and a cult following that included many like-minded artists. A musician's musician, Martin blew in like a breath of fresh air with a voice full of beauty and angst and a wholly unique writing sensibility that tweaks the standard love song with brushes of dark humour and spite. She's made an amazing comeback with her latest album Life Drawing Without Instruction. It's an astounding collection of diverse, lively folk-rock songs that are tricky to pin down. Martin coos and hollers, kisses and spits, hugs and kicks depending on the song at hand, while an eclectic musical stew brews behind her. Her new record features Martin and her bandmates Annelise Noronha, Rob Carson, Leo Valvassori and Dave Clark stretching to their multi-instrumentalist limit with the addition of accordion, tuba, glockenspiel, cello, trombone, wine glasses and musical saw. Cameos by fans and friends include Martin Tielli and Michael Phillip Wojewoda (Rheostatics), Rob Piltch, St. Dirt Elementary School, Julia Hambleton, Greg Smith (Weakerthans) and members of Wayne Omaha. Martin's latest effort has resulted in more amazing music from a real artist, someone who flies in the face of convention and still creates great songs. The Globe and Mail Life Drawing Without Instruction **** (highest rating) Selina Martin has the voice of a thrift-shop angel and the eye of an eagle circling over it's prey. She's too decent to lie, and too cruel to look away as you react to what she has to say about your shabby subterfuges, which may also be hers. Her new album is full of sneaky wisdom and good tunes that refuse to know where to draw the line. Her arrangements (made and performed with friends from the Rheostatics end of the indie scene) have a way of billowing into grand or parodic tributes to whatever folly she happens to be discussing. Her band is her Greek chorus, commenting on the action with a leer or a tear. Ideally, these songs would be performed in the seedy, comfortable cabaret whose existence they imply. But that cabaret may not exist, so you'd better just buy the record. - Robert Everett-Green.
