Schon die Benennung nach dem Ort Tannenberg, der eher am Rande des Geschehens lag, weist in diese Richtung: Sie sollte an die gleichnamige Schlacht von 1410 erinnern, in der ein Heer des Deutschen Ordens vernichtend von einem polnisch-litauischen Heer geschlagen wurde.John Zimmermann analysiert auf breiter Quellenbasis den Verlauf und die Folgen der Schlacht. Er hinterfragt die Mythenbildung und legt anschaulich dar, warum der Mythos "Tannenberg" nach 1945 ausgedient hatte.
