Warlock Holmes - A Study in Brimstone , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 594min
Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius. Warlock Holmes is an idiot. A font of arcane power, certainly. But he's brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn't deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only thing he has really got going for him are the might of 1,000 demons and his stalwart companion. Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety and save him from a gruesome death every now and again. ungekürzt. Language: English. Random Harvest , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 598min
Books You Hear is genuinely proud to present Random Harvest by James Hilton. Though this story may be new to the post-WWII generations, it has an impressive history, making it, perhaps, the greatest story you’ve never heard of. Published in 1941, Random Harvest was contemporary to its first audience, and is painted against the backdrop of the gathering storm in Europe. However, it doesn’t focus on military threats or political wrangling. Instead, it tells the very accessible story of a profoundly good man with normal aspirations who consistently put the needs of others first, and as a result, lived a life he never could have imagined. In 1942, a feature film was made that significantly altered the narrative (and narrator) of this original story. It was also excellent and was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Ironically, it lost out to a film also written by James Hilton, and with the same lead actress, Greer Garson. However, in later years, it was Random Harvest that both Garson and her co-star, Ronald Colman recognized as the project in their careers that they most enjoyed. The story is told in five parts, with each representing a significant period in the main character’s life - encompassing war, power, prestige, high finance, show business, and of course, deep and romantic love. Since the film focuses primarily on the love story, there is much that makes the book a new and deeply satisfying experience. And for those who haven’t seen the film yet, experience the book first. You will love the way Hilton educates and envelops you with this beautiful story, and leaves you so much better, and happier, for the journey. ungekürzt. Language: English. Hemingway Didn't Say That: The Truth Behind Familiar Quotations , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 523min
Everywhere you look, you'll find viral quotable wisdom attributed to icons ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Mark Twain, from Cicero to Woody Allen. But more often than not, these attributions are false. Garson O'Toole - the Internet's foremost investigator into the dubious origins of our most repeated quotations, aphorisms, and everyday sayings - collects his efforts into a first-ever encyclopedia of corrective popular history. Containing an enormous amount of original research, this delightful compendium presents information previously unavailable to readers, writers, and scholars. It also serves as the first careful examination of what causes misquotations and how they spread across the globe. Using the massive expansion in online databases as well as old-fashioned gumshoe archival digging, O'Toole provides a fascinating study of our modern abilities to find and correct misinformation. As Carl Sagan did not say, "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mel Foster. Waverly Estate: Ghost Dance , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 565min
Waverly Estate is a sentinel that looks down from abrupt roof lines above The Hudson River. More than 100 years after The Revolutionary War, its presence continues to whisper of battles won and lost; of death and vacuous halls and hearts, and of treacherous deeds committed. Its residents are not troubled by the dead alone. Far more ghastly are the living. It is the year 1858 and Garson, the pitiless master of Waverly, lies dying. A magnificent dome above him boasts paintings of Rene Bonhomme, a French artist who covets more than Garson's wicked wife, Hannah. Death hides in the beauty of both his wife and art, and trickery awaits his last breath. Ancestors compose a chain of errors when they fail to consider Amelia, the long dead daughter of butler James. When crossed, she unleashes ghastly reminders that she is ever present.Waverly Estate: Ghost Dance is a tale of hope and love that endures beyond mortal existence. It challenges belief in the ever after and explores spaces that bridge life and death. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tracy Collier.
