Think of today‘s top operatic voices, and black owners of them are as likely to come into the list as white ones: Willard White, Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle to name only three. We know it wasn‘t always thus - Paul Robeson‘s struggles to be recognised as a great singer, instead of a black singer, went on for many decades. But this programme reveals just how hard the journey to acceptance of America‘s black singers has been. It opens with one of the greatest voices of the 20th century: Marian Anderson and a clip of her magnificent performance of ‚Ave Maria‘. The film offers newsreel footage from her landmark 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial, which was held after the Daughters of the American Revolution denied her access to their Constitution Hall venue. But the black tradition of classical singing goes back even further: Before Leontye Price, Jessye Norman and even before Marian Anderson, Sissieretta Jones was arguably the greatest black performer of 19th century America and certainly the first great black diva. Sissieretta Jones, the ‚Black Patti‘, an allusion to Italian-American primadonna Adelina Patti, performed before four American presidents, mesmerized critics and audiences alike and was so successful that at one concert in New Jersey 1,000 visitors had to be turned away. The film Aida‘s Brothers and Sisters intends to focus the viewer‘s gaze particularly on the black classic and also on the fascinating mixed forms that have developed from the confrontation of white and black music in the last hundred years. The encounter with the powerful personalities of the singers and their music will reveal the humour, the lust for life, and the spiritual depth of black culture, and will perhaps add a dash of colour to a white fin de siècle culture that is in danger of contracting anaemia. A fascinating documentary with historical and contemporary fi lm and video records of performances by Leontyne Price, Simon Estes, Grace Bumbry, Reri Grist and many others.

Born and raised in Trim, Co. Meath, Gerry Tully is a gifted singer and songwriter. Combining his love of song writing, storytelling and performing, Gerry's one man shows have captivated audiences and he is one of Meath's well kept secrets 'till now.He grew up in a musical family and taught himself to play guitar at an early age. After leaving school half way through his secondary education, Gerry worked various daytime jobs but continued to hone his vocal and instrumental skills by gigging solo and also with many other bands. He has played in various music genres including a country band, heavy metal group, and traditional/ballad outfits. In 2002 Gerry released a six-track demo CD called "Grist for the Mill" which met with great acclaim and has featured on RTE National Radio. In 2003 he joined forces with two friends to form a traditional group "Coisir". They embarked on a tour of Germany in 2004 with "Sessions From The Hearth" covering 17 cities in 17 nights. They also appeared on Brendan Begley's award winning program "Gantry". Together they released a CD called "On The Right Track". The four songs on the CD are penned by Gerry and have gained great favour with audiences and critics alike. During this time, Gerry also found time to tour on the festival circuit in America and Europe with other Irish musicians. Gerry has played support to a host of well-known artists including Dervish, The Fureys, The Hothouse Flowers, Mundy, and The Dubliners, and featured on the Working Class Heroes Tour with Don Baker, Ronnie Drew, and Finbar Furey. In 2004 he decided to become a full time musician and build a solo career. He started gigging in the hotels, pubs and clubs around Ireland . He continued his song writing during this time and in 2007 recorded his debut album "Leaves Float Down" which he released in February 2008. It is a collection of 13 self-penned songs that bring a brand new eclectic sound and unique style to the market. All the songs are excellently produced and have quirky story lines touching on many subjects including love, loss, fear, and forgiveness. Honest and introspective songs from the heart with a sound that appeals to a broad audience. The song 'News For You' features harmonica from actor and musician Don Baker. Gerry is a very strong solo performer. He uses various guitar tunings, self-taught finger styles, the rich power of his singing voice enhances his flair for story telling. "What sets Tully aside is his poetic use of words, his description of life, love and all other matters of the heart. There is a warmth about every song that keeps the toe tapping and the soul rejoicing." Fergal Lynch - The Meath Chronicle .

The Imports forged their unique brand of post-punk in the quiet and tree-lined neighborhood of Hyde Park on the South Side of Chicago in the spring of 1980. Making up the core of the Imports were Ben Krug (vocals), Tom Krug (guitar) and Joe Strell (bass). Like many bands, the Imports went through a series of drummers including John Krug, who helped establish the Imports as one of a scarce few Chicago punk bands in 1980, Alec Dale, who accompanied the outfit through it's transition from punk to post-punk, and finally Tom Wall, who with his inimitable minimalism completed the band's singular sound that would prove to be decades ahead of it's time. Initially, the Imports played a quick pop punk set of originals inspired by late seventies American and British punk acts such as Iggy Pop, the New York Dolls, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Jam. Their repertoire soon swelled to over sixty originals, few of which ran much longer than two minutes, if that. The songs were fast and to the point, their earnest vocals and basic harmonies backed by driving durms, a melodic three-string bass, and the grist of a Gibson SG Junior Les Paul pumped through a Fender Twin Reverb. However, soon after their Chicago debut at the club Ann Arkees on March 6, 1980, the Imports traded their high-intensity pop-punk bombast for a hypnotizing style wrought of brooding melancholy.
