The Cobweb
Step inside the Castle, a large private psychiatric facility. Here, Dr. Stewart McIver (Richard Widmark) devotes night and day to his profession while neglecting his pining, voluptuous wife (Gloria Grahame). A colleague (Charles Boyer) with a fondness for booze and a pretty face seeks to comfort the wife. Now add Lauren Bacall, Lillian Gish, John Kerr, Susan Strasberg, Oscar Levant and subplots of love, life and derangement and you have the entanglements of The Cobweb. Some critics gleefully skewered the film's labored storyline about patient involvement in the choice of library draperies, but pay no heed. With it's top cast and Vincente Minnelli's command of color and melodrama, this film is popcorn for fans of soaps.- Shop: odax

Wake Up Awesome
Wake Up Awesome, by C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core), Okkyung Lee, and Lasse Marhaug (Jazzkamer), is the second chapter of Software Studio Series - a new venture in the Software Recording Co.'s expanding catalog that invites artists in the field of electronic music to create collaborative works of quality and vision. Inspired by the historical intersections of live performance and studio post-production, Wake Up Awesome is a modern kind of fusion in technique as well as genre. At its core are three artists highly experienced with both instant and labored composition. Together, they found the studio generated improvisations were iteratively developed by each on their own. Passages of real-time improvisation duck and swerve into electro-concrete tangles of samples, edits and juxtaposition all you'd want out of a world of mechanical possibility. If it sounds intentional on the record, it was. If Yeh and Marhaug's more electronic affinities in their respective practices place them as the producers, then Lee's cello often leads the drive as a sort of soloist. The resulting conversation is genuinely both serious and iconoclastic. All three artists have a history of dialogue, but this is the first time they've hung out for the record -- we're very happy that they did. Wake Up Awesome is available via the Software in limited vinyl edition as well as CD and digital formats. TRACKS: 1. Wake Up Awesome 2. Hairslide 3. The Mermen of Poetry 4. Ophelia Gimme Shelter 5. Joyful
One summer, after hosting an art and cultural camp on the remote Black River, I made the journey to Anchorage from the little remote village I lived and taught in. My dear friends Larry and Karen invited me to stay at their hidden mountain retreat outside of Anchorage where I spent days on the piano, surrounded by mountains, wildflowers and light. When I got there, I was exhausted from months of traveling through the remote Interior of Alaska teaching in village schools. Temperatures plunge to 40 below and colder. I had slept on the floors of the schools and worked day and night to give the students a fine arts experience. Having this respite on the piano was truly a gift from heaven. It was recorded live at Alaska Steinway Gallery by engineer Peter Ratner, a Russian conductor emigre to Alaska. There was unfortunate background traffic noise from the street that came through on a few of the pieces. The recording ended up being sent to Eric James in Great Britain for mastering. Eric, a professor at Cambridge, is one of the leading classical recording engineers in the world and he labored to make sure the sound was corrected. And that is how Joyful was recorded. Just one two hour session plus a lot of nit-picky extrication by Eric of background noise. After a long, dark winter it was truly a joyful experience!- Shop: odax
