Dirty Pillows
Debüt-EP der britischen Sound-Melancholiker. Als eine Mischung als Slint, Mark Hollis und Soft Machine beschrieb das englische Magazin MOJO das Debüt von Savoy Grand. "Dirty Pillows" ist genau das Richtige für Freunde kleiner Herzensbrüche. Getreu dem Leitmotiv von oben erwähntem Mark Hollis ("Es ist besser, eine Note gut zu spielen, als zehn schlecht") lassen sich Savoy Grand beim Spielen Zeit. Der Opener "Arm the Lonely" hat mit acht Minuten neunzehn durchaus epische Ausmaße. Auch "Another Thinly Veiled Confession" besteht fast ausschließlich aus E-Gitarre, manchmal wird sanft ein Piano angeschlagen, alle 30 Sekunden gibt es einen Basstupfer und einen zaghaften Einsatz des Vibraphons. Und "There Is Nothing New Here" zeigt die ganze Klasse der in Jazz und Klassik geschulten Musiker. Der Songs groovt federnd vor sich hin, aber Savoy Grand nehmen sich in der Mitte zwei Minuten Zeit, um das Stück völlig zerbröckeln zu lassen, nur um gegen Ende spielerisch wieder Fahrt aufzunehmen. Auch "Swimmingless" ist pure Schönheit. Exakt alle 15 Sekunden wird ein Gitarrenakkord angeschlagen und klingen gelassen. Dann herrscht Stille. Dann wieder ein Akkord. Nach zwei Minuten steigt der Gesang ein. Die Frequenz steigt nicht. Die Reduzierung der musikalischen Mittel ist hier auf die Spitze getrieben. Das Stück dauert sieben Minuten. Langweilig? Keine Spur. Nach 35 Minuten ist das originale Album zu Ende. Viel zu früh. Die Glitterhouse-Version hat daher zwei Bonustracks, die sich passgenau einfügen.- Shop: odax
