There is no place on this round planet where I can run that will be any farther than the next place - any place will eventually spin on its axis until it reaches the point of departure. War can live deep inside a family long after the combat has come and gone. With a poet's voice, E. L. Carter evokes that generational echo in the story of one grieving young woman who is trying to find her birthright. Maddy has been running. She has run from her home, her family, and her lovers. Then her brother's suicide after being injured in the Iraq War, leaving her a mysterious note about a gift. With the help of an old family friend, she begins to explore her brother's story and her family history. As she works to uncover what her brother has left her, she finds herself in the middle of a parallel mystery: the legacy of her grandmother, a Gypsy holocaust survivor who has been ostracized by the family. In order to accept her brother's gift, Maddy eventually discovers that she must stop, listen, and face generations of women's war trauma that bridge Europe, the US, and the Middle East. Part mystery, part meditation, The Running War weaves together narratives into a whole that asks as many questions as it answers. What does an enemy mean? How do we survive suffering? What is the women's legacy of war that embeds itself in generation after generation? Lyrical and haunting, The Running War is ultimately a call toward healing intergenerational trauma, no matter the source. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nicol Zanzarella. Now and then, a novel turns out to be prophetic - and no one is more surprised than the author. When I wrote Money Talks back in 2007, neither I nor anyone else imagined that the White House would soon be occupied by a man who bears such a striking and in fact uncanny resemblance to my villain, Robert Maxx. I wasn't trying to write a predictive dystopia; all I wanted to do was to tell an engaging story that would let me think my way into the mind of a real-estate mogul with a bullying manner, a head of hair flamboyant enough to match his ego, and a somewhat childish fixation to see his name on very tall buildings. I wanted to explore what drove that kind of man, what kind of neediness was behind his endless quest for power. And I wanted to see how an ordinary, decent fellow might keep his moral bearings while in the employ and thrall of such a person. My everyman was a mild-mannered ghostwriter named David Collins. His predicament, in 2017, is one that millions of us share: How to hang on to his hopes, his dignity, and maybe even his sense of humor, in a high-stakes game where the bad guys seem to be holding all the chips. Part dark comedy, part boardroom drama, part murder mystery, and part prescient satire, Money Talks is a refreshing reminder that truth will eventually win out and justice will eventually be done. ungekürzt. Animal lover though she was, Lorin Lindner was definitely not looking for a pet. Then came Sammy - a mischievous and extremely loud bright pink Moluccan cockatoo who had been abandoned. It was love at first sight. But Sammy needed a companion. Enter Mango, lover of humans ("Hewwo"), inveterate thief of precious objects. Realizing that there were many parrots in need of new homes, Dr. Lindner eventually founded a sanctuary for them.  Meanwhile, she began to meet homeless veterans on the streets of Los Angeles. Before long she was a full time advocate for these former service members, who were often suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Ultimately, Dr. Lindner created a program for them, too.  Eventually the two parts of her life came together when she founded Serenity Park, a unique sanctuary on the grounds of the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration Healthcare Center. She had noticed that the veterans she treated as a clinical psychologist and the parrots she had taken in as a rescuer quickly formed bonds. Men and women who had been silent in therapy would share their stories and their feelings more easily with animals.  Birds of a Feather is ultimately a love story between veterans and the birds they nurse back to health and between Dr. Lindner and her husband, a veteran with PTSD, who healed at Serenity Park. Full of remarkable people and colorful birds, this audiobook reminds us that we all have the power to make a difference. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gabra Zackman. Budapest, 1956. In the darkest year of Hungary's modern history, a national uprising against Soviet occupiers and their reign of terrorist underway. Eleven-year-old Évike and her firebrand mother steal deep into battle zones in support of civilian freedom fighters, armed only with primitive weapons and desperate courage against the heavy artillery of trained Russian troops. When taken in for interrogation by the secret police, little Évike spins a story to deflect attention from her mother's revolutionary activities - a story that will irrevocably alter many lives and reach its tentacles, thirty years later, into the life of Ildiko Palmay. Chicago, 1986. Ildiko is a thirty-seven-year-old librarian and ESL teacher, the American-born daughter of Hungarian refugees. She is caught in a web of guilt and regret over her mother's mystifying death. Unsettled by her life and her romantic failures, she finds herself suddenly and unexpectedly drawn back to her roots - first to the Hungarian neighborhood of her youth in Chicago, and eventually to the Russian-occupied city of Budapest. Along the way, she meets a magnetic man who may not be what he seems and uncovers a trail of secrets and betrayals that eventually intersects with the tangled knot of the mother-daughter participants in the revolution. Triptych is the suspenseful unfolding of two parallel stories of mother and daughter relationships forged in the brutalities of the 1956 Hungarian revolution - a tale about the corrosive power of secrets and, ultimately, the healing power of forgiveness. ungekürzt. If you want to discover the captivating history of the Mycenaeans, then pay attention....The Mycenaeans were the first advanced civilization to develop on mainland Greece, and were responsible for much of the urban organization and cultural development seen in the early ancient Greeks. The Mycenaeans created sprawling palatial states, unique and sophisticated works of art, and possessed a writing system that could be used to make records. For these reasons, they are considered a prime example of a thriving Bronze Age civilization. The Mycenaeans were responsible for numerous innovations and technological advancements for the region, including architecture and military structure. They developed their own syllabic script called Linear B and also possessed the first-ever written records of the Greek language. Perhaps more surprising for modern audiences, the Mycenaeans worshipped several of the deities famous in Greek religion long before the development of the Olympic pantheon. Although the Mycenaeans would eventually fall during something called the Bronze Age Collapse, their civilization would survive by adapting and eventually morphing into the ancient Greeks known so well in Western civilizations. In The Mycenaeans: A Captivating Guide to the First Advanced Civilization in Ancient Greece, you will discover topics such as Political and Military OrganizationCulture and Daily LifeEconomy and TradeThe Shaft Grave Era, c. 1600 - 1450 BCEThe Koine Era, c. 1450 - 1250 BCEThe Collapse, c. 1250 - 1100 BCEThe Caroline War (1369-1389)The Precursors of Greek ReligionArt and ArchitectureAnd much, much more!So if you want to learn more about the Mycenaeans, buy this audiobook now! ungekürzt. Propelled to stardom at the age of 15, until his tragic death from cancer at the age of 53, this is the story of actor Jack Wild, in his own words - published for the first time. Jack was just an ordinary young boy whose talent was spotted by chance by a theatrical agent and propelled onto the world stage through his performance in the 1968 film musical Oliver! It brought him an Oscar nomination and international stardom. As his fame grew, Jack also began to battle with alcoholism, which eventually dominated most accounts of his life. After the glittery highs of the '60s and '70s came the 'lost decade' of the '80s, the lows of debts and sectioning under the Mental Health Act. The real story of this is here, in Jack’s own words. But this isn’t a memoir of pity and darkness. Jack loved life and loved his life. In the '90s, and fully sober, Jack returned to the screen in films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Even in the face of the tragic diagnosis of mouth cancer, which eventually killed him, he remained resolutely optimistic about life. His story contains vivid behind the scenes accounts of many great names he worked with, from British favourites such as Diana Dors and Ron Moody to international stars like Bing Crosby and Kevin Costner. Completed by Jack’s widow, Claire, the book is in Jack’s unique narrative voice with honesty, roguish charm and a breathtaking lack of self-pity. ungekürzt. Baseball inspired millions of people in the United States. It evolved from the old bat and ball games which used to be played in England during the 18th century. The immigrants who came to settle in North America were the ones responsible for bringing this game to America. Eventually they came up with the modern version of the game and by the end of 19th century baseball was being recognized as the national sport of the US. The first recorded American reference of baseball in the US traces its way back to 1791, which was an ordinance passed in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The uproar created by the cheering crowd was the reason on the game being banned from being played anywhere within 80 yards of the town meeting house. Later in the 19th century the growing racism got the good of the sport. Things got worse and eventually ended by the first black baseball club called the Cuban Giants. In 1920 the Negro National League was established. The game saw an evolution over the years, from where it began, as a game which was the heart of the people and then media, marketing, agencies all came in and changed the purpose of the game all together. It became more of a higher brand and more popularity thing. This book discusses about the history of baseball and how it evolved over the years to gain its place in the hearts of the people who so passionately play or watch the baseball games. ungekürzt. Taken from George Armstrong Custer's own writings, An Autobiography of General Custer is the “true story” of one of the most praised, most despised, but surely most remembered American military heroes. Indeed, few figures in our history were - in their own time, as well as in our own - so wildly cheered and so roundly hated. Custer’s narration takes us from just after the Civil War, when, having gained a reputation as a bold and inventive leader of the cavalry, Custer was given command of an expedition to help subjugate the Native Peoples of the Great Plains and to force them onto reservations. His story touches on his own court martial and subsequent reinstatement to command. It ends shortly before he embarks upon the campaign that would eventually lead to the Battle of the Little Bighorn and “Custer’s Last Stand.” As Custer was unable to write about his most famous battle, the Autobiography concludes with an 1880s newspaper account of an interview with Sitting Bull himself after his escape to Canada, in which the great Chief looks back on the battle and offers his own point of view. In the evenings, on post and during his various leaves, Custer would sit at the dining room table with his beloved wife, Libby, and together they would compose the various stories of his exploits that would eventually become the book My Life on the Plains, which was a best-seller in its time, and from which this autobiography is largely taken. ungekürzt.
